Decline Of Coral Growth Rates At Negril, Jamaica, T. J. Goreau, Richard E. Dodge, P. D. Goreau
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
Montastrea annularis heads were collected near Negril, Jamaica, along transects from open, normal reef conditions into the mouths of rivers draining the Negril Morass. Corals subject to turbidity (particulate peat and dissolved humic compouonds near rivers, re-suspended reef sediments away from them) were growing more slowly than those in normal circumstances. Surprisingly, corals growing fastest were slowing the most, and the slowest growers increasing growth rate. Linear regression analysis of growth trends over the past two decades revealed stable limit-cycle behavior: change of growth was inversely proportional to growth rate, with a very significant correlation coefficient of -0.92. We suggest …

We have examined the nuclear localization of isoprenylated proteins in CHO-K1 cells labeled with [14C]mevalonate. Nuclear proteins of 68, 70, and 74 kD, posttranslationally modified by an isoprenoid, are also components of a nuclear matrix-intermediate filament preparation from CHO cells. Furthermore, the 68-, 70-, and 74-kD isoprenylated polypeptides are immunoprecipitated from cell extracts with two different anti-lamin antisera. Based on exact two-dimensional comigration with lamin B, both from rat liver lamin and CHO nuclear matrix-intermediate filament preparations, and its immunoprecipitation with anti-lamin antisera, we conclude that the 68-kD isoprenylated protein found in nuclei from [14C]mevalonate-labeled CHO cells is lamin B. …

Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese
Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Biotechnology is a diverse array of technologies which today are in various stages of evolution and development. To understand them and the potential application of these technologies to agriculture, it is helpful to consider them in a historical perspective. In addition, it is important to understand the interdependence of biotechnologies on traditional, well developed technologies. The commercial development of biotechnology is more difficult than imagined even as recently as five years ago. Also, the problems being addressed generally demand a much better understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the plant and animal systems under study. Nonetheless, there is a …

Australia—An Unstable Platform For Tide-Gauge Measurements Of Changing Sea Levels: A Discussion, Edward A. Bryant, P. S. Roy, B. G. Thom
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
The recent detailed analyses by Aubrey and Emery (1986) of Australian sea level trends continues their efforts to define tectonic and climatic factors worldwide that dominate long- and short-term fluctuations respectively in sea level records. These factors have included sediment and water loading on the adjacent shelf, the tectonic behaviour of plates, fluctuations in the Southern Oscillation, behaviour of currents impinging on the shelf, and river runoff. We do not object to these efforts; however we are disturbed by misrepresentations in their recent paper on Australian sea levels regarding (1) the interpretation of the nature of sea-level records, (2) the …
Sea-Level Variability And Its Impact Within The Greenhouse Scenario, Edward A. Bryant
Sea-Level Variability And Its Impact Within The Greenhouse Scenario, Edward A. Bryant
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
The greenhouse scenario assumes that sea level will rise worldwide at uniform rates because of near-polar ice melting or because of thermal expansion of ocean waters. This view ignores the natural variability of existing sea-level behaviour that occurs globally over time. It also ignores the fact that some of this variability is related to changes in climatic parameters such as precipitation, barometric pressure and temperature that will be influenced by the greenhouse effect. This paper presents existing evidence on sea-level variability across the globe and links it to changes in atmospheric pressure, air temperature and precipitation for the period 1933-1980. …
Predation By Ermine And Long-Tailed Weasels On Duck Eggs, Joseph P. Fleskes
Predation By Ermine And Long-Tailed Weasels On Duck Eggs, Joseph P. Fleskes
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Ermine (Mustela erminea) and long-tailed weasel (M. frenata) predation on duck eggs was studied at Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge, Kossuth County, Iowa, 1984-85. Captive individuals of both species ate 2-4 duck eggs at a rate of 0.5-2 eggs per trial day. All eggs were moved but some were not opened. One hole, ringed with small fragments and "bite-outs'', was made in all eggs opened by captive weasels. In the field, the appearance of opened eggs, the pattern of egg loss and the amount of nest bowl disturbance were used to determine the number of nests depreciated by weasels. Egg …
Biotechnology: A Dilemma For Land-Grant Institutions, A. David Kline
Biotechnology: A Dilemma For Land-Grant Institutions, A. David Kline
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
There is at least a prima facie moral tension between universities asserting land-grant principles and simultaneously sponsoring biotechnology. The core of the problem is the likely deleterious economic effects of biotechnology on rural communities -- the very constituency whose welfare is supposedly promoted by land-grant institutions. Considered are a number of responses to this tension including efforts to show that the tension is only apparent or that it can be eliminated through various public policies. It is argued that these "solutions" fail.
The upshot is that if the land-grant label is to be taken seriously, those institutions should begin allocating …

Some Genetic Characteristics Of Three Walleye Stocks In Iowa And The Impact Of Fry Stockings In The Cedar River, Vaughn L. Paragamian
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Fry stockings of walleye Stizostedion v. vitreum into the Cedar River, Iowa began in the early 1950's, and two studies of the success of these plants gave conflicting results. The objectives of my study were to identify some genetic characteristics in three stocks of walleye and to utilize these characteristics to assess the genetic impact of fry stockings in the Cedar River. Electrophoretic analysis of malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) was completed for walleye stocks from the Mississippi and Cedar Rivers, and Big Spirit Lake, Iowa. Phenotypic frequencies of Mdh - B2 and Mdh - B3 …

Elasmopus Balkomanus, A New Species From The Florida Keys (Crustacea, Amphipoda), James Darwin Thomas, J. L. Barnard
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Elasmopus balkomanus is described from Looe Key Reef in the Florida Keys. The species is very close to the eastern Pacific E. antennatus but in the male has equally extending rami on uropod 3, only 2 (versus 4-6) spines on each lobe of the tel son in adults, a lateral ridge on the propodus of male gnathopod 2 and very heavily armed flagella of antenna 2 in the male.
This species lives in a short-tufted algal turf community on coral rubble but apparently is rare because it has only been collected once in 10 years of sampling in the Florida …

Arkansas' Timber Resource: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Richard A. Kluender, R. L. Willett
Arkansas' Timber Resource: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Richard A. Kluender, R. L. Willett
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Demand for forest products continues to rise. Arkansas provides about 4% of the U.S. total forest production and about 12% of the south central region production. Questions exist about the ability of current forest resources to completely meet anticipated future demand. In 1985, the U.S. Forest Service and the Arkansas Timber Study Committee began to analyze the existing forest base to determine whether future demand could be met from the current forest, or if not, what management changes were needed to help meet future demand. In 1985, Arkansas forests covered approximately 48% of the total land area of the state. …
