The Relationship Of Food Conversion Efficiency And Growth Potential In Juvenile Mosquitofish, Gambusia Affinis, Joseph J. Cech Jr., Michael J. Massingill, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
New information concerning respiratory metabolic rates of juvenile mosquitofish (i = 915 mg 02 kg-1 h-1 at 20° C) was applied to existing data on mosquitofish respiration and combined with findings on growth and food consumption rates to determine percentages of net ingested energy used for growth and respiration over a 10- 35° C temperature range. The energy percentage used by mosquitofish for respiration was minimized at 25-30° C while that used for growth (= food conversion efficiency) was maximized at the same temperature. A calculated growth potential index, derived from an overall energy balance equation, was also maximized at …

Aspects Of Larval Ecology Of Squilla Empusa (Crustacea, Stomatopoda) In Chesapeake Bay, Steven G. Morgan
Aspects Of Larval Ecology Of Squilla Empusa (Crustacea, Stomatopoda) In Chesapeake Bay, Steven G. Morgan
OES Faculty Publications
Larvae of Squilla empusa were collected from the plankton and were laboratory-reared in 16 combinations of temperature and salinity to determine their tolerances. Larvae survived longer and molted more frequently when reared at 25%, and 20° or 25° C, which corresponds to the natural conditions of Chesapeake Bay when the larvae were collected.
A 2 year planktonic survey conducted in the lower region of the bay by the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences was compared with a survey made at the bay mouth in 1976. The seasonal occurrence of Squilla empusa larvae extended from the last week of July until …

The Virginian Sea Bibliography, Thomas M. Armitage, William J. Hargis Jr.
Reports
The bibliography of the Virginian Sea is a compendium of literature and environmental data concerning the Middle Atlantic Bight region of the Western North Atlantic - or the United States east coast. The geographical coverage of this bibliography ineludes that region extending from 41° N latitude to 36° N latitude and out 200 miles from the coastal headlands. This volume represents the first step of an effort undertaken by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to assess the present status of knowledge concerning the physical and chemical environment, biology, and fisheries of the Virginian Sea. We do not put forth …

Influence Of Planting System On Surface Soil, Physical Conditions And Soil Water Relations, D Tennant
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Influence of planting system on surface soil, physical conditions and soil water relations. The availability of soil water for crop use can this way be influenced by planting system. Various aspects of soil water relations were examined in varying detail at three sites - Wongan Hills, Avondale and Merredin, over the 1979 and 1980 growing seasons. Some of this soil water data are presented here. The Department of Agriculture initiated a programme in 1977 to investigate and compare crop performance under several planting systems. This project was part of this programme and had as its objectives: 1. Measurement of soil …

The Effects Of N-Serve On The Availability Of Urea And Ureaformaldehyde Nitrogen On Lolium Perenne L., Ronald E. Schroll
The Effects Of N-Serve On The Availability Of Urea And Ureaformaldehyde Nitrogen On Lolium Perenne L., Ronald E. Schroll
Masters Theses
Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the effect of "N-Serve" (DOW) on the availability of urea nitrogen and the subsequent greening effect on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) seedlings as compared to the availability of nitrogen and subsequent greening from a controlled release ureaformaldehyde fertilizer. A low organic matter sandy loam soil and a high organic matter clay loam soil were used in this study. Soil treatments of urea and ureaformaldehyde fertilizers were applied and incorporated at concentrations of 0, 25, 38, and 50 ppm-N. N-Serve at concentrations of 0.25, 0.50, and 1.0 ppm active ingredient were applied and …
Repopulation Of Fishes In Riley Creek, Coles County, Illinois Following Nitrogen Fertilizer Pollution, Kim James Carney
Repopulation Of Fishes In Riley Creek, Coles County, Illinois Following Nitrogen Fertilizer Pollution, Kim James Carney
Masters Theses
The repopulation of stream fishes was studied from 17 May 1979 to 25 October 1979 following a major kill (100% mortality) caused by nitrogen fertilizer pollution in Riley Creek, Coles County, Illinois. The extent of recovery was determined by comparing post-kill collections with pre-kill survey data that was collected on 25 October 1978.
Repopulation began six days after the abatement of the pollution source. It is suggested that the initial source of repopulation was from the nearest undamaged tributary. The first three reinhabitants in order of appearence were: stonerollers (Campostoma anomalum); creek chubs (Semotilus atromaculatus); and …

Phytoplankton Studies Within The Virginia Barrier Islands I. Seasonal Study Of Phytoplankton In Goose Lake, Parramore Island, Harold G. Marshall
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The phytoplankton of Goose Lake, an oligohaline lake on Parramore Island, was studied for one year. The populations consisted primarily of ultraplankton and nanoplankton-sized forms with diatoms and chlorophyceans dominant most of the year. A general pattern of seasonally higher cell concentrations in early summer and fall was noted, with an unidentified ultraplankton-sized component prominent throughout the collection period. A list of 154 species is given.

Resource Use By Amphipoda (Crustacea: Peracarida) On The Outer Continental Shelf Of The Middle Atlantic Bight: Implications To Community Structure, Linda C. Schaffner
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Benthic communities on the outer continental shelf of the Middle Atlantic Bight are characterized by abundant populations of amphipods in the families Ampeliscidae and Corophiidae. Members of these families occupy tubes at or near the sediment surface and, thus, potentially compete with each other for spatial and trophic resources. This study examines the spatial, temporal and trophic resource use of six numerically dominant species in these families as a means of assessing the relative importance of competition as a structuring force in outer shelf benthic communities.
Analysis of abundance data and the use of discriminant analysis to relate abundance to …
