A Study Of The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Project And Its Impact On The Resources Of The Upper Saint John River Valley, Rosemary M. Manning, Sierra Club, New England Chapter

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

This report was under-taken primarily to evaluate the impact that the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project would have upon the resources of the Upper St. John River, and to examine the assertion that the Dickey-Lincoln project constitutes a wise use of the public's environmental and economic resources. Since the case that has been made for the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project rest primarily on the justification of the project in economic terms, this aspect of the project proposal will be intensively explored.

Objective Measurement And The Stud Breeder, B R. Beetson Jan 1973

Objective Measurement And The Stud Breeder, B R. Beetson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The movement towards sale of wool by certificate and sample highlights the significance of objective measurement in the Merino stud breeders' selection of his top rams.

This article suggests how stud breeders should use the Department of Agriculture's Flock Testing Service to gain genetic progress in wool producing ability without loss of visual buyer appeal.

Studs' use of the service will be evaluated in 1974.

Summary Of 1972 Seasonal Results "Decide" Superphosphate Rates On Pastures, J. W. Bowden Jan 1973

Summary Of 1972 Seasonal Results "Decide" Superphosphate Rates On Pastures, J. W. Bowden

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

A total of 53 pasture trials were topdressed. Of these, 37 trials were quantitatively assessed at different times during the growing season. Of the 15 wheat trials sown, only four trials gave useful results because of multiple drilling techniques used on most trials. Until the trial results have undergone comprehensive statistical analysis, no conclusions can be drawn. about the levels of response or "optimum" rates of superphosphate application at individual sites. However, because of the very short growing season in 1972 responses were generally poor. It appears that nil superphosphate application would have been optimum for animal production in the …

Crayfish, Leech, And Snail Control Jan 1973

Crayfish, Leech, And Snail Control

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

We have effective results in controlling crayfish in our ponds using Baytex. Baytex is a higly toxic compound that effects the nervous system of many organisms. Used in small concentrations it will kill crayfish without hurting fish. We use Baytex at 40 ppb. We normally dilute the required amount of chemical with water and then mix it thoroughly in the pond. Leeches can be controlled using Dylox. Masoten is another trade name for dylox. The recommended rate of application is 1/2 ppm. This should be applied in a manner so it is thoroughly mixed in the ground. Recommened treatment for …

Grey Kangaroo Management Programme, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1973

Grey Kangaroo Management Programme, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Grey Kangaroo Management Programme, introduced in 1971 by the Department of Fisheries and Fauna, is designed to ensure the long-term conservation of the grey kangaroo, while at the same time recognising the right of the landholder to protect his primary production from damage.

One of the points which has arisen after examination of the programme is that some individual farmers are not fully aware of the requirements of the regulations.

A Geochemical Study Of A Marsh Environment, Thomas F. Lytle, Julia Sever Lytle, Patrick L. Parker

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The goal of this study was twofold: 1) chemically to characterize a specific salt marsh, the sediments and associated biota and 2) to establish clear relationships between the chemical substances residing in the sediments and similar or identical substances occurring in the biological specimens. In this particular study it was felt that the hydrocarbons would yield the most significant organic geochemical information. These compounds are ubiquitous but minor components of all organisms. Though their function is not entirely understood, it is known that they are concentrated in the waxy coatings of plants and most likely aid in the protective mechanisms …

Time Of Planting And Rate Of Seeding On Lupin Yield, G Walton Jan 1973

Time Of Planting And Rate Of Seeding On Lupin Yield, G Walton

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Of the four time of planting trials twodefinitely showed superiority of earlier seeding (73BA5, 73E6). The two trials in the Southwest (73BR14 and 73MT7) gave highest yields with June sowing compared to May. Three trials (73BR14, 73E6 and 73BA5) appear to have a Variety x Time interaction for plant density, but no definite trend for either Uniharvest or Unicrop although later sowing reduced plant density. Seeding rates in excess of 82 kg/ha gave the highest yields in all trials. The rate of seeding experiments (73BA5 and 73MT7) show that the best crop density for yield (graph) lies between 8 and …

Final Report On Interrelationships Between Chemical, Physical And Biological Conditions Of The Waters Of Las Vegas Bay Of Lake Mead, James E. Deacon, Richard W. Tew

Publications (WR)

This program was a status study of the interaction between Las Vegas Wash, an enriched stream, and Las Vegas Bay, a wedge shaped arm of one of the world's deeper reservoirs. The program centered primarily on identification and counting of planktonic algae from several points in Las Vegas Bay. Additional work on nutrient enrichment of water samples was conducted to aid in interpretation of algal distribution related to nutrient input. Examination of a variety of physical, chemical, and biological parameters, both at many surface points in the bay, as well as in vertical profile, was also accomplished and further aided …
