Sheep : Experimental Basis For Urea Feeding Recommendations, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1970

Sheep : Experimental Basis For Urea Feeding Recommendations, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Recent scientific reviews have concluded that in spite of the great number of experimental observations recorded throughout the world there is no evidence yet to prove that urea can be used profitably for sheep on low quality roughages in genuine grazing conditions.

An experiment is in progress at Merredin Research Station this season, especially designed to demonstrate a response to urea by sheep grazing wheat stubbles, if such a response is possible.

The Control Of Algae, G R W Meadly Jan 1970

The Control Of Algae, G R W Meadly

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

CONDITIONS in areas of still, stored water in Western Australia can easily become ideal for the development of algae and control measures may become necessary in farm dams and swimming pools.

Part I - Controlling The Soil Moisture Environment Of Transpiring Plants, Part Ii - Prediction Of Leaf Temperature Under Natural Atmospheric Conditions, Charles T. Haan, Billy J. Barfield, Robert Edling

KWRRI Research Reports

Part I

A technique for controlling the soil moisture potential in the root zone of transpiring plants was developed. The method uses the principles of unsaturated flow through a porous media to develop the desired moisture potential. In the case of non-steady state transpiration, the maximum possible fluctuation in the soil moisture potential can be determined by the techniques presented.

Part II

Two implicit leaf temperature prediction equations were derived from the energy balance approach. The equations define sensible and latent heat transfer from a plant population as a two step process:

  1. Transfer between the plant leaf and the canopy …

Some Ecological Relations Of Fairy Shrimps In Alkaline Habitats Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher Jan 1970

Some Ecological Relations Of Fairy Shrimps In Alkaline Habitats Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Ecological studies on the distribution of fairy shrimps have been made from 246 sites in the sandhills region of Nebraska. New records for Nebraska have been established for Artemia salina, Branchinecta campestris, B. lindahli, B. mackini and Cyzicus mexicanus. Seasonal populations of shrimp have been located in habitats containing permanent fish populations. Water mineralization was the dominant environmental condition related to the distribution of phyllopods with sodium and potassium compounds predominating in the strongly alkaline lakes. Several of the Artemia lakes were classified as hydroxide sites. Many of the alkaline ponds, where B. lindahli and B. campestris flourish, are …

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Medium Rainfall Zone Trials Eleven replications of the basic rate of P, rate of SO4-S and S experiments were maintained during 1970 in the 20in - 30 in. rainfall zone. Soil types examined were the very gravelly soils (5 reps, 4 sites), sands or loamy sands over gravel or clay (3 sites) and sandplain soils (3 reps, 2 sites). In all cases except one, fertiliser history was not reliable, but in every case well over one ton of super had been applied. over a period of over 15 years.

Anhydrous Ammonia, M G. Mason Jan 1970

Anhydrous Ammonia, M G. Mason

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Anhydrous ammonia, as the name infers, is pure ammonia, It is kept in a liquid form under pressure and must therefore be stored in special vessels. When pressure is released it changes to gaseous form. Anhydrous ammonia is the most concentrated form of nitrogen fertiliser available. It has 82% nitrogen compared to 46% for urea, the most concentrated solid form of nitrogen fertilisers.

Trials carried out were:

1965 - 1967 Wongan Hills Research station (3)

1967 - Badgingarra (1)

1968 - Moulyinning (1)

1968 - North Lake Grace (1)

Annual Summary Of Experimental Results 1970-71 - Evaluation Of Pasture Species, G H. Walton

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

During 1970 interest in the small ungrazed Legume Species Trials was reduced to ten trials located in the more troublesome areas. Five of the trials are on the sandy soils of the Midland Plain three trials are in Merredin-Southern·cross region, one is on deep sand at Tincurrin and the other is at Pindar. All thesites are sandy soils on which the sub clover strains appear to perform the best. The newer trials are investigating the value of sub clover cultivars such as Northam A,Mt Helena A, Shenton Park A, and Daglish. These trials will be the subject of a special …

Emergency Chlorination Of Farm Water Supplies, H C. Hughes Jan 1970

Emergency Chlorination Of Farm Water Supplies, H C. Hughes

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TOWARDS the end of summer (and especially in a drought) the risk of water in dams, soaks, wells or tanks becoming polluted is increased.

Bore water is much less likely to be affected unless the bore is poorly sited near a farm building, such as a shearing or milking shed, a pig pen, or a septic tank system.

Soil Microbiology, D E. Chatel

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

SUBTERRANEAN CLOVER INOCULATION EXPERIMENTS Badgingarra and Newdegate Comparisons between Rhizobium trifolii strain WU290 and possible replacement strains were continued. The work was conducted for the following reasons 1. The need for information on "back-up" strains particularly since the inoculant manufacturers had experienced difficulty in producing high-count peat cultures of WU290. 2. Strain CC2480a had proved very satisfactory in the Eastern States. Although it did not show up to advantage under our conditions in 1968,further testing was indicated. 3. The need for information on inoculation needs on old land.

A Time Series From The Beach Environment-Ii, Wyman Harrison, L. E. Fausak

Reports

This work is the second in a continuing series of time-series data reports to be published periodically as a result of field investigations in the beach-ocean-atmosphere system by Dr. Wyman Harrison and his associates. The first report was published as Technical Memorandum ERLTM-AOL 1 of ESSA's Atlantic Oceanographic Laboratories. This series of reports will allow other researchers to test hypotheses or to experiment with analytical procedures without going through the expensive and somewhat arduous task of obtaining the data.

Quasilattice Interpretation Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Mixing Of Binary Alkali-Metal Systems, J. Bevan Ott, J. Rex Goates Nov 1969

Quasilattice Interpretation Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Mixing Of Binary Alkali-Metal Systems, J. Bevan Ott, J. Rex Goates

Faculty Publications

Quasilattice theory was applied to heats of mixing in the six systems formed from the binary combinations of Na, K, Rb, and Cs. The alkali-metal systems are particularly well suited for a critical test of the quasi-crystalline assumption since the theoretical model for these systems is relatively simple and the thermodynamic data are fairly complex. Very good fits of the heat-of-mixing data were achieved by assuming that the larger atom in the binary system covered multiple sites on the quasilattice. The values of the empirically determined constants appear to fit the physical significance accorded to them by the quasilattice model. …

A Study Of Folic Acid Dependent Reactions In Bovine Brain, Dillard Spencer Broderick Aug 1969

A Study Of Folic Acid Dependent Reactions In Bovine Brain, Dillard Spencer Broderick

Theses and Dissertations

The enzymatic interconversion of serine to glycine and N5, N10-methylene tetrahydrofolate to N5 -methyl tetrahydrofolate have been studied in a cell-free system derived from bovine brain. A partial purification of serine transhydroxymethylase and N5, N10 -methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase has been achieved by ammonium sulfate fractionation, protamine sulfate fraction, and by various column chromatography procedures. The two enzymes studied catalyze sequentially the reductive transfer of the hydroxymethyl group of serine to the N5 position of tetrahydrofolate forming N5 -methyl tetrahydrofolate. The products of these reactions were assayed by the incorporation of C14 from a one-carbon precursor i.e., L-beta-(C14)-serine, or N5 -methyl …

The Effect Of Removing The Crevicular Epithelium Upon Canine Tooth Replantation, Leon A. Leonard Jun 1969

The Effect Of Removing The Crevicular Epithelium Upon Canine Tooth Replantation, Leon A. Leonard

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The nature of epithelium and the remarkable facility with which it aggressively covers granulation tissue, suggests that removal of the sulcular epithelium surrounding the extraction wound of a tooth to be replanted could promote reattachment of the periodontal tissues at a more nearly ideal coronal level. To investigate this hypothesis twenty mature teeth in five mongrel dogs were experimentally replanted. One half of them were replanted in alveoli around which the crevicular epithelium had been removed, the remaining teeth without creviculoectomy acting as controls. Animals were euthanized at one, two, three, five, and sixteen weeks. After clinical evaluation of the …

The Agricultural Potential Of Owingup Swamp, C V. Malcolm, L T. Jones, J. P. Fallon Jun 1969

The Agricultural Potential Of Owingup Swamp, C V. Malcolm, L T. Jones, J. P. Fallon

Technical Bulletins

1. Soil Survey of Owingup Swamp

2. Comparison of Owingup and Grasmere Swamps

The two swamps, Owingup and Grasmere, shown on the location map are practically identical with regard to soil conditions. Grasmere Swamp however has been cleared and used for agriculture for some 60 years while Owingup Swamp is as yet unalienated. Soils on both swamps consist of mainly organic diatomaceous clay. The survey reported here was aimed at assessing the agricultural potential of Owingup Swamp in the light of experience gained since the clearing of Grasmere Swamp. Findings of the survey indicate that some 2000 acres at Owingup …
