Using Correlation Coefficients To Estimate Slopes In Multiple Linear Regression, Rudy Gideon Jan 2010

Using Correlation Coefficients To Estimate Slopes In Multiple Linear Regression, Rudy Gideon

Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

This short note takes correlation coefficients as the starting point to obtain inferential results in linear regression. Under certain conditions, the population correlation coefficient and the sampling correlation coefficient can be related via a Taylor series expansion to allow inference on the coefficients in simple and multiple regression. This general method includes nonparametric correlation coefficients and so gives a universal way to develop regression methods. This work is part of a correlation estimation system that uses correlation coefficients to perform estimation in many settings, for example, time series, nonlinear and generalized linear models, and individual distributions.

Neutrosophic Diagram And Classes Of Neutrosophic Paradoxes Or To The Outer-Limits Of Science, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2010

Neutrosophic Diagram And Classes Of Neutrosophic Paradoxes Or To The Outer-Limits Of Science, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

These paradoxes are called “neutrosophic” since they are based on indeterminacy (or neutrality, i.e. neither true nor false), which is the third component in neutrosophic logic. We generalize the Venn diagram to a Neutrosophic Diagram, which deals with vague, inexact, ambiguous, illdefined ideas, statements, notions, entities with unclear borders. We define the neutrosophic truth table and introduce two neutrosophic operators (neuterization and antonymization operators) give many classes of neutrosophic paradoxes.

Fusion Of Sources Of Evidence With Different Importances And Reliabilities, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert, J.M. Tacnet Jan 2010

Fusion Of Sources Of Evidence With Different Importances And Reliabilities, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert, J.M. Tacnet

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper presents a new approach for combining sources of evidences with different importances and reliabilities. Usually, the combination of sources of evidences with different reliabilities is done by the classical Shafer’s discounting approach. Therefore, to consider unequal importances of sources, if any, a similar reliability discounting process is generally used, making no difference between the notion of importance and reliability. In fact, in multicriteria decision context, these notions should be clearly distinguished. This paper shows how this can be done and we provide simple examples to show the differences between both solutions for managing importances and reliabilities of sources. …

Variational Analysis In Parametric Optimization, Yen Nhi Nguyen Thi Jan 2010

Variational Analysis In Parametric Optimization, Yen Nhi Nguyen Thi

Wayne State University Dissertations

The dissertation is devoted to the development of variational analysis and generalized differentiation in infinite dimensions. We derive new calculus rules for both first-order partial subdifferentials and second-order partial subdifferentials in the framework of general Banach spaces as well as more developed rules in the framework of Asplund spaces. This calculus is applied in the study of sensitivity analysis for solution maps to the parameterized generalized equations in Asplund spaces, where both bases and fields are parameter-dependent multifunctions. We analyze the parametric sensitivity of either stationary points or stationary point multiplier multifunctions associated with parameterized optimization problems under consideration. The …

We prove several lower bounds for the norm of a truncated Toeplitz operator and obtain a curious relationship between the H2 and H norms of functions in model spaces.

Extending K-8 Mathematics Concepts In Alternate Bases, Dianna J. Spence Jan 2010

Extending K-8 Mathematics Concepts In Alternate Bases, Dianna J. Spence

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

When learning to represent mathematics with manipulatives, many pre-service K-8 teachers rely on memorized rote procedures to perform the associated mathematical tasks; then they arrange the manipulatives to match their result, often with minimal understanding of underlying mathematical connections. In a Number and Operations course for K-8 pre-service teachers, a portion of the class was conducted in alternate bases: Base 6 and Base 8 Blocks were used to model operations with integers to facilitate deeper understanding of the number systems and arithmetic processes being represented. Fractions and decimals were later covered only in Base 10. On midterm and final exams, …

When Is .999... Less Than 1?, Karin Usadi Katz, Mikhail G. Katz Jan 2010

When Is .999... Less Than 1?, Karin Usadi Katz, Mikhail G. Katz

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We examine alternative interpretations of the symbol described as nought, point, nine recurring. Is "an infinite number of 9s" merely a figure of speech? How are such alternative interpretations related to infinite cardinalities? How are they expressed in Lightstone's "semicolon" notation? Is it possible to choose a canonical alternative interpretation? Should unital evaluation of the symbol .999... be inculcated in a pre-limit teaching environment? The problem of the unital evaluation is hereby examined from the pre-R, pre-lim viewpoint of the student.

“What Was Really Accomplished Today?” Mathematics Content Specialists Observe A Class For Prospective K–8 Teachers, Andrew M. Tyminksi, Sarah Ledford, Dennis Hembree Jan 2010

“What Was Really Accomplished Today?” Mathematics Content Specialists Observe A Class For Prospective K–8 Teachers, Andrew M. Tyminksi, Sarah Ledford, Dennis Hembree

The Mathematics Enthusiast

One of the important activities mathematics teacher educators engage in is the development of teachers at both the in-service and pre-service levels. Also of importance is the professional development of these professional developers. In the summer of 2004, a summer institute was held that allowed mathematics teacher educators watch the teaching of a mathematics content course for prospective K–8 teachers. This paper examines the manner in which a specific group of mathematics content specialists experienced this professional development.

On The Convergence Of Greedy Algorithms For Initial Segments Of The Haar Basis, S J. Dilworth, E Odell, Th Schlumprecht, Andras Zsak Jan 2010

On The Convergence Of Greedy Algorithms For Initial Segments Of The Haar Basis, S J. Dilworth, E Odell, Th Schlumprecht, Andras Zsak

Faculty Publications

We consider the X-Greedy Algorithm and the Dual Greedy Algorithm in a finite-dimensional Banach space with a strictly monotone basis as the dictionary. We show that when the dictionary is an initial segment of the Haar basis in Lp[0, 1] (1< p < 1) then the algorithms terminate after finitely many iterations and that the number of iterations is bounded by a function of the length of the initial segment. We also prove a more general result for a class of strictly monotone bases.

New Classes Of Neutrosophic Linear Algebras, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book we introduce mainly three new classes of linear algebras; neutrosophic group linear algebras, neutrosophic semigroup linear algebras and neutrosophic set linear algebras. The authors also define the fuzzy analogue of these three structures. This book is organized into seven chapters. Chapter one is introductory in content. The notion of neutrosophic set linear algebras and neutrosophic neutrosophic set linear algebras are introduced and their properties analysed in chapter two. Chapter three introduces the notion of neutrosophic semigroup linear algebras and neutrosophic group linear algebras. A study of their substructures are systematically carried out in this chapter. The fuzzy …

Proposed Problems Of Mathematics (Vol. Ii), Florentin Smarandache Jan 2010

Proposed Problems Of Mathematics (Vol. Ii), Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The first book of “Problèmes avec et sans … problèmes!” was published in Morocco in 1983. I collected these problems that I published in various Romanian or foreign magazines (amongst which: “Gazeta Matematică”, magazine which formed me as problem solver, “American Mathematical Monthly”, “Crux Mathematicorum” (Canada), “Elemente der Mathematik” (Switzerland), “Gaceta Matematica” (Spain), “Nieuw voor Archief” (Holland), etc. while others are new proposed problems in this second volume.

These have been created in various periods: when I was working as mathematics professor in Romania (1984-1988), or co-operant professor in Morocco (1982-1984), or emigrant in the USA (1990-1997). I thank to …

Single Valued Neutrosophic Sets, Haibin Wang, Florentin Smarandache, Yanqing Zhang, Rajshekhar Sunderraman Jan 2010

Single Valued Neutrosophic Sets, Haibin Wang, Florentin Smarandache, Yanqing Zhang, Rajshekhar Sunderraman

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic set is a part of neutrosophy which studies the origin, nature, and scope of neutralities, as well as their interactions with different ideational spectra. Neutrosophic set is a powerful general formal framework that has been recently proposed. However, neutrosophic set needs to be specified from a technical point of view. To this effect, we define the settheoretic operators on an instance of neutrosophic set, we call it single valued neutrosophic set (SVNS). We provide various properties of SVNS, which are connected to the operations and relations over SVNS.

On Coalgebras Over Algebras, Adriana Balan, Alexander Kurz Jan 2010

On Coalgebras Over Algebras, Adriana Balan, Alexander Kurz

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We extend Barr’s well-known characterization of the final coalgebra of a Set-endofunctor as the completion of its initial algebra to the Eilenberg-Moore category of algebras for a Set-monad M for functors arising as liftings. As an application we introduce the notion of commuting pair of endofunctors with respect to the monad M and show that under reasonable assumptions, the final coalgebra of one of the endofunctors involved can be obtained as the free algebra generated by the initial algebra of the other endofunctor.

The Fundamental Gap For Hyperbolic Triangles, Dennis Stuart Fillebrown Jan 2010

The Fundamental Gap For Hyperbolic Triangles, Dennis Stuart Fillebrown

Honors Theses

In 1983, M. van den Berg made his Fundamental Gap Conjecture about the difference between the first two Dirichlet eigenvalues (the fundamental gap) of any convex domain in the Euclidean plane. Recently, progress has been made in the case where the domains are polygons and, in particular, triangles. We examine the conjecture for triangles in hyperbolic geometry, though we seek an for an upper bound for the fundamental gap rather than a lower bound.

Morphing Of Triangular Meshes In Shape Space, Stefanie Wuhrer, Prosenjit Bose, Chang Shu, Joseph O'Rourke, Alan Brunton Jan 2010

Morphing Of Triangular Meshes In Shape Space, Stefanie Wuhrer, Prosenjit Bose, Chang Shu, Joseph O'Rourke, Alan Brunton

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We present a novel approach to morph between two isometric poses of the same non-rigid object given as triangular meshes. We model the morphs as linear interpolations in a suitable shape space S. For triangulated 3D polygons, we prove that interpolating linearly in this shape space corresponds to the most isometric morph in R3 . We then extend this shape space to arbitrary triangulations in 3D using a heuristic approach and show the practical use of the approach using experiments. Furthermore, we discuss a modified shape space that is useful for isometric skeleton morphing. All of the newly presented …

Dosimetry Calculations Of Radiopharmaceuticals, Kelbe Jahnke Jan 2010

Dosimetry Calculations Of Radiopharmaceuticals, Kelbe Jahnke

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The goal of this project is to determine the absorbed dose of radiation to a patient using 99mTc-MAA as a tracer for a lung scan using the MIRD formula accounting only for the radiation dose contributed by the target organ. The radiation dose for other organs to the target organ is considered negligible as the uptake of 99mTc-MAA from other organs is less than 1%. In addition to calculating the absorbed dose of radiation, the initial dose rate was also calculated by back solving to determine the total mass of the lungs. The radiation dose to the patient …

Stormwater Management System Drawdown, Ahmad Chehab Jan 2010

Stormwater Management System Drawdown, Ahmad Chehab

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

This project concerns the computations required to determine the drawdown for the retention/detention of ponds. Drawdown refers to the volume of water in a pond that decreases as the water flows out. The falling head equation has many applications and can be used to calculate the drawdown of a pond through various shaped openings. In particular, we analyze four outflow structures: a rectangular-notch weir, a v-notch weir, a round orifice, and an underdrain. For each instance, we modify the falling head equation to reflect the shape of the respective orifice.

Curvature Measures For Nonlinear Regression Models Using Continuous Designs With Applications To Optimal Design, Timothy O'Brien, Somsri Jamroenpinyo, Chinnaphong Bumrungsup

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We present and illustrate the methodology to calculate curvature measures for continuous designs, and extend design criteria to incorporate continuous designs. These design algorithms include quadratic design procedures, a subset design criterion, a second-order mean-square error design criterion, and a marginal curvature design methodology. A discussion of confidence intervals is also provided for continuous designs.

Sufficient Conditions For Univalence Obtained By Using Second Order Linear Strong Differential Subordinations, Georgia Irina Oros Jan 2010

Sufficient Conditions For Univalence Obtained By Using Second Order Linear Strong Differential Subordinations, Georgia Irina Oros

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The concept of differential subordination was introduced in [3] by S.S. Miller and P.T. Mocanu and the concept of strong differential subordination was introduced in [1], [2] by J.A. Antonino and S. Romaguera. In [5] we have studied the strong differential subordinations in the general case and in [6] we have studied the first order linear strong differential subordinations. In this paper we study the second order linear strong differential subordinations. Our results may be applied to deduce sufficient conditions for univalence in the unit disc, such as starlikeness, convexity, alpha-convexity, close-to-convexity respectively.

Nontrivial Periodic Solutions Of Nonlinear Functional Differential Systems With Feedback Control, Yingxin Guo

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

This paper examines the existence of nontrivial periodic solutions for the nonlinear functional differential system with feedback control: \{\aligned x'(t)=x(t)a(t)-\big[\sum_{i=1}^n a_i(t)\int_0^{+\infty} f(t, x(t-\theta)) d}\varphi_i(\theta) +\sum_{j=1}^m b_j(t) \int_0^{+\infty} f(t,x'(t-\theta))\,d}\phi_j(\theta)+\sum_{\mu=1}^p c_\mu(t) \int_0^{\infty} u(t-\theta)\,d}\delta_\mu(\theta)\big], u'(t)=-\rho(t)u(t)+\sum_{\nu=1}^q \beta_\nu(t) \int_0^{\infty} f(t, x(t-\theta))\,d}\psi_\nu(\theta).\endaligned Under certain growth conditions on the nonlinearity f, several sufficient conditions for the existence of nontrivial solution are obtained by using Leray-Schauder nonlinear alternative.

The Equivalence Of Centro-Equiaffine Curves, Yasemi̇n Sağiroğlu, Ömer Pekşen Jan 2010

The Equivalence Of Centro-Equiaffine Curves, Yasemi̇n Sağiroğlu, Ömer Pekşen

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The motivation of this paper is to find formulation of the SL(n,R)-equivalence of curves. The types for centro-equiaffine curves and for every type all invariant parametrizations for such curves are introduced. The problem of SL(n,R)-equivalence of centro-equiaffine curves is reduced to that of paths. The centro-equiaffine curvatures of path as a generating system of the differential ring of SL(n,R)-invariant differential polinomial functions of path are found. Global conditions of SL(n,R)-equivalence of curves are given in terms of the types and invariants. It is proved that the invariants are independent.
