Advanced Discrete Halanay-Type Inequalities: Stability Of Difference Equations, Ravi P. Agarwal, Youngho Kim, Syamal K. Sen

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

We derive new nonlinear discrete analogue of the continuous Halanay-type inequality. These inequalities can be used as basic tools in the study of the global asymptotic stability of the equilibrium of certain generalized difference equations.

Teachers Reflecting Differently: Deconstructing The Discursive Teacher/Student Binary, David W. Stinson, Ginny C. Powell Jan 2009

Teachers Reflecting Differently: Deconstructing The Discursive Teacher/Student Binary, David W. Stinson, Ginny C. Powell

Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Faculty Publications

This session explores the ways that practicing teachers came to reflect differently regarding the discursive teacher/student binary during a graduate-level course entitled “Mathematics Education within the Postmodern.” Using Dewey’s concept of reflective thinking, as well as Foucault’s discourse and Derrida’s deconstruction, we show how the course provided new suggestions for the students as they continued their journey of becoming teachers. Through interweaving comments written by the students with concepts borrowed from postmodern philosophers and theorists, we illustrate how the teachers began to understand that teachers and students might indeed be described differently in the postmodern.

The Proliferation Of Theoretical Paradigms Quandary: How One Novice Researcher Used Eclecticism As A Solution, David W. Stinson Jan 2009

The Proliferation Of Theoretical Paradigms Quandary: How One Novice Researcher Used Eclecticism As A Solution, David W. Stinson

Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Faculty Publications

When a doctoral student plans to conduct qualitative education research, the aspect of the dissertation that often becomes problematic is determining which theoretical paradigm(s) might frame the study. In this article, the author discusses how he resolved the quandary through eclecticism. The author begins by describing briefly the purpose of his dissertation study, providing a justification for eclecticism in the selection of theories. He follows with a description of the three theories— poststructural theory, critical race theory, and critical theory—that framed his study and discusses briefly the methodology employed. The author concludes with a discussion of likely objections of his …

Zpc Matrices And Zero Cycles, Marina Arav, Frank Hall, Zhongshan Li, Bhaskara Rao Jan 2009

Zpc Matrices And Zero Cycles, Marina Arav, Frank Hall, Zhongshan Li, Bhaskara Rao

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Let H be an m x n real matrix and let Zi be the set of column indices of the zero entries of row i of H. Then the conditions |Zk ∩(Uk-1 i=1 Zi)| ≤ 1 for all k (2 ≤ km) are called the (row) Zero Position Conditions (ZPCs). If H satisfies the ZPC, then H is said to be a (row) ZPC matrix. If HT satisfies the ZPC, then H is said to be a column ZPC matrix. The real matrix H is said to …

Ham Sandwich With Mayo: A Stronger Conclusion To The Classical Ham Sandwich Theorem, John H. Elton, Theodore P. Hill Jan 2009

Ham Sandwich With Mayo: A Stronger Conclusion To The Classical Ham Sandwich Theorem, John H. Elton, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

The conclusion of the classical ham sandwich theorem of Banach and Steinhaus may be strengthened: there always exists a common bisecting hyperplane that touches each of the sets, that is, intersects the closure of each set. Hence, if the knife is smeared with mayonnaise, a cut can always be made so that it will not only simultaneously bisect each of the ingredients, but it will also spread mayonnaise on each. A discrete analog of this theorem says that n finite nonempty sets in n-dimensional Euclidean space can always be simultaneously bisected by a single hyperplane that contains at least one …

A Characterization Of Pseudo-Orders In The Ring Zn, Jorge Ivan Vargas Jan 2009

A Characterization Of Pseudo-Orders In The Ring Zn, Jorge Ivan Vargas

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Partially ordered sets are widely studied in algebra. The theory of lattice-ordered and partially-ordered rings is an important case. In this paper, we consider a more general relation: pseudo orders, which are relations that are reflexive and antisymmetric, but are not necessarily transitive. Analogously to partially-ordered rings, we study pseudo-ordered rings. We present a general characterization for pseudo-ordered rings, and then we focus on a specific structure: the ring Zn. Having the constraints of this ring, we are able to give the conditions under which Zn can be pseudo-ordered.

Asymptotic Approximation Of The Free Boundary For The American Put Near Expiry, Walt E. Bales Jan 2009

Asymptotic Approximation Of The Free Boundary For The American Put Near Expiry, Walt E. Bales

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

An introduction to boundary value problems for the heat operator will focus on the Dirichlet and Neumann problems in bounded domains. Following an overview of the basic financial principles of derivative securities, a derivation of the Black-Scholes formulae will be given. Partial differential equations as free boundary problems will then be discussed and applied to modeling the American Put option. A method of solution close to expiry will then be investigated.

Introduction To Pseudo-Ordered Groups, Maria Dolores Cruz Jan 2009

Introduction To Pseudo-Ordered Groups, Maria Dolores Cruz

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

We will give a definition, examples and basic properties of pseudo-ordered groups. These generalize partially-ordered groups. The pseudo-ordered groups have a compatible pseudo-order relation that may lack transitivity. Unlike partially-ordered groups, our groups can be finite and still admit a non-trivial pseudo-order. We will show necessary and sufficient conditions for a group to have a compatible pseudo-order. We also consider maximal pseudo-orders. We give a definition of a pseudo chain induced by a pseudo-order and characterize all pseudo chains on the group $\mathbb {Z}_{n}.$ We will calculate the number of non-isomorphic pseudo-orders on $\mathbb {Z}_{n}$ for $ n < 24.$

Survey Research On Communication And Language For English Language Learners And Native English Speakers Enrolled In A College Course On Statistical Literacy, Maria Guadalupe Valenzuela

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine in what ways language is a factor that affects the learning process of students in an introductory statistics class. This research used a questionnaire survey instrument called: CLASS, Communication, Language And Statistics Survey that was applied to a total of 137 college students from a large southwestern public university, 83 of these students were self-identified as native English speakers (NOELL) and 53 were self-identified as English learner speakers (ELL) and one was dropped. This research found that in statistical instruction, there are some particular differences in behavior and learning process in the …

Coarser Connected Topologies And Non-Normality Points, Lynne Yengulalp Jan 2009

Coarser Connected Topologies And Non-Normality Points, Lynne Yengulalp

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We investigate two topics, coarser connected topologies and non-normality points. The motivating question in the first topic is:

Question 0.0.1. When does a space have a coarser connected topology with a nice topological property? We will discuss some results when the property is Hausdorff and prove that if X is a non-compact metric space that has weight at least c, then it has a coarser connected metrizable topology. The second topic is concerned with the following question:

Question 0.0.2. When is a point y ∈ β X\X a non-normality point of β X\X? We will discuss the question in the …

Discrete Fractional Calculus With The Nabla Operator, Ferhan M. Atici, Paul W. Eloe Jan 2009

Discrete Fractional Calculus With The Nabla Operator, Ferhan M. Atici, Paul W. Eloe

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Properties of discrete fractional calculus in the sense of a backward difference are introduced and developed. Exponential laws and a product rule are developed and relations to the forward fractional calculus are explored. Properties of the Laplace transform for the nabla derivative on the time scale of integers are developed and a fractional finite difference equation is solved with a transform method. As a corollary, two new identities for the gamma function are exhibited.

Some More Identities Of Rogers-Ramanujan Type, Douglas Bowman, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this we paper we prove several new identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Slater type. These identities were found as the result of computer searches. The proofs involve a variety of techniques, including series-series identities, Bailey pairs, a theorem of Watson on basic hypergeometric series, generating functions and miscellaneous methods.

Lifting Bailey Pairs To Wp-Bailey Pairs, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills, Peter Zimmer Jan 2009

Lifting Bailey Pairs To Wp-Bailey Pairs, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills, Peter Zimmer

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A pair of sequences (αn(a,k,q),βn(a,k,q)) such that α0(a,k,q)=1 and βn(a,k,q)=∑nj=0(k/a;q)n−j(k;q)n+j(q;q)n−j(aq;q)n+jαj(a,k,q) is termed aWP-Bailey Pair . Upon setting k=0 in such a pair we obtain a Bailey pair. In the present paper we consider the problem of “lifting” a Bailey pair to a WP-Bailey pair, and use some of the new WP-Bailey pairs found in this way to derive some new identities between basic hypergeometric series and new single-sum and double-sum identities of the Rogers–Ramanujan–Slater type.

Combinatorics Of Ramanujan-Slater Type Identities, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills Jan 2009

Combinatorics Of Ramanujan-Slater Type Identities, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We provide the missing member of a family of four q-series identities related to the modulus 36, the other members having been found by Ramanujan and Slater. We examine combinatorial implications of the identities in this family, and of some of the identities we considered inIdentities of the Ramanujan-Slater type related to the moduli 18 and 24.

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We describe three computer searches (in PARI/GP, Maple, and Mathematica, respectively) which led to the discovery of a number of identities of Rogers–Ramanujan type and identities of false theta functions.

Why Did Lagrange "Prove" The Parallel Postulate?, Judith V. Grabiner Jan 2009

Why Did Lagrange "Prove" The Parallel Postulate?, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

In 1806, Joseph-Louis Lagrange read a memoir "proving" Euclid's parallel postulate to the Institut de France in Paris. The memoir still exists in manuscript, and we’ll look at what it says. We ask why he tried to prove the postulate, and why he attacked the problem in the way that he did. We also look at how the ideas in this manuscript are related to such things as Lagrange’s philosophy of mathematics, artists’ ideas about space, Newtonian mechanics, and Leibniz's Principle of Sufficient Reason. Finally, we reflect on how this episode changes our views about eighteenth-century attitudes toward geometry, space, …

Gorenstein Flat Dimension Of Complexes, Alina Iacob Jan 2009

Gorenstein Flat Dimension Of Complexes, Alina Iacob

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

We define a notion of Gorenstein flat dimension for unbounded complexes over left GF-closed rings. Over Gorenstein rings we introduce a notion of Gorenstein cohomology for complexes; we also define a generalized Tate cohomology for complexes over Gorenstein rings, and we show that there is a close connection between the absolute, the Gorenstein and the generalized Tate cohomology.

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

In recent years the introduction and development of Interior-Point Methods has had a profound impact on optimization theory as well as practice, influencing the field of Operations Research and related areas. Development of these methods has quickly led to the design of new and efficient optimization codes particularly for Linear Programming. Consequently, there has been an increasing need to introduce theory and methods of this new area in optimization into the appropriate undergraduate and first year graduate courses such as introductory Operations Research and/or Linear Programming courses, Industrial Engineering courses and Math Modeling courses. The objective of this paper is …

Establishment Of Weak Conditions For Darboux-Goursat-Beudon Theorem, Mekki Terbeche, Broderick O. Oluyede

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper is devoted to the establishment of weak conditions for Darboux-Goursat-Beudon (DGB) theorem in order to improve analogous results in [1, 7]. By adapting a technique proposed by [7] in another setting [8] via majorant method, we obtain the generalization of DGB theorem.

Empirical Development Of An Instructional Product And Its Impact On Mastery Of Geometry Concepts, Donaldson Williams Jan 2009

Empirical Development Of An Instructional Product And Its Impact On Mastery Of Geometry Concepts, Donaldson Williams

Dissertations

Problem

Relatively poor levels of mathematical thinking among American school children have been identified as a major issue over the past half century. Many efforts have been made to increase the mathematics performance of children in schools. Additionally, out-of-school-time programs have attempted to address this issue as well. Holistic development is one of the distinguishing features of Seventh-day Adventist instructional programs. Yet, as of 2007, the Pathfinder program, an informal educational program operated by the world-wide Seventh-day Adventist church, had no instructional product designed to foster participants’ cognitive development in mathematics. This study focused on the empirical development of an …

[Introduction To] The Hardy Space Of A Slit Domain, William T. Ross, Alexandra Aleman, Nathan S. Feldman Jan 2009

[Introduction To] The Hardy Space Of A Slit Domain, William T. Ross, Alexandra Aleman, Nathan S. Feldman

Bookshelf

If H is a Hilbert space and T : H ? H is a continous linear operator, a natural question to ask is: What are the closed subspaces M of H for which T M ? M? Of course the famous invariant subspace problem asks whether or not T has any non-trivial invariant subspaces. This monograph is part of a long line of study of the invariant subspaces of the operator T = M (multiplication by the independent variable z, i. e. , M f = zf ) on a z z Hilbert space of analytic functions on a bounded …

On The Socles Of Characteristic Subgroups Of Abelian P-Groups, P. V. Danchev, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 2009

On The Socles Of Characteristic Subgroups Of Abelian P-Groups, P. V. Danchev, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

Fully invariant subgroups of an Abelian p-group have been the object of a good deal of study, while characteristic subgroups have received somewhat less attention. Recently the socles of fully invariant subgroups have been studied and this led to the notion of a socle-regular group. The present work replaces the fully invariant subgroups with characteristic ones and leads in a natural way to the notion of a strongly socle-regular group. A surprising relationship, mirroring that between transitive and fully transitive groups, is obtained.
