Approximating The Spectral Width Of Irradiance Fluctuations With Quasi-Frequency, Andrew Reel Jan 2008

Approximating The Spectral Width Of Irradiance Fluctuations With Quasi-Frequency, Andrew Reel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Under weak turbulence theory, we will use the random thin phase screen model and the Kolmogorov power-law spectrum to derive approximate models for the scintillation index, covariance function of irradiance fluctuations, and temporal spectrum of irradiance fluctuations for collimated beams. In addition, we will provide an expression for the quasi-frequency of a collimated beam and investigate the relationship between the quasi-frequency and the maximum width of the normalized temporal spectrum of irradiance for a collimated beam.

Analysis Of Kolmogorov's Superposition Theorem And Its Implementation In Applications With Low And High Dimensional Data., Donald Bryant Jan 2008

Analysis Of Kolmogorov's Superposition Theorem And Its Implementation In Applications With Low And High Dimensional Data., Donald Bryant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we analyze Kolmogorov's superposition theorem for high dimensions. Our main goal is to explore and demonstrate the feasibility of an accurate implementation of Kolmogorov's theorem. First, based on Lorentz's ideas, we provide a thorough discussion on the proof and its numerical implementation of the theorem in dimension two. We present computational experiments which prove the feasibility of the theorem in applications of low dimensions (namely, dimensions two and three). Next, we present high dimensional extensions with complete and detailed proofs and provide the implementation that aims at applications with high dimensionality. The amalgamation of these ideas is …

Lattice-Valued Convergence: Quotient Maps, Hatim Boustique Jan 2008

Lattice-Valued Convergence: Quotient Maps, Hatim Boustique

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of fuzzy sets by Zadeh has created new research directions in many fields of mathematics. Fuzzy set theory was originally restricted to the lattice , but the thrust of more recent research has pertained to general lattices. The present work is primarily focused on the theory of lattice-valued convergence spaces; the category of lattice-valued convergence spaces has been shown to possess the following desirable categorical properties: topological, cartesian-closed, and extensional. Properties of quotient maps between objects in this category are investigated in this work; in particular, one of our principal results shows that quotient maps are productive under …

The Eight Monarchs (Some Mathematical Magic), Jeremiah Farrell, Eric Nelson

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The eight Monarchs are the four Kings and four Queens of an ordinary deck of cards. We can perform our magic without a deck by using the grid below with the K-Q token ( a coin can be used instead if one wishes).

The Effect: The magician's back will be turned while Mark, the subject, places the token on one of the suit nodes. Mark is to remember this starting position. Then Mark makes a sequence of moves; a move being one of four possibilities: a horizontal move, a vertical move, or a diagonal move to a new node or …

Weighted Composition Operators On H² And Applications, Valentin Matache Jan 2008

Weighted Composition Operators On H² And Applications, Valentin Matache

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Operators on function spaces acting by composition to the right with a fixed selfmap φ of some set are called composition operators of symbol φ. A weighted composition operator is an operator equal to a composition operator followed by a multiplication operator. We summarize the basic properties of bounded and compact weighted composition operators on the Hilbert Hardy space on the open unit disk and use them to study composition operators on Hardy–Smirnov spaces.

A Spatial Sirs Boolean Network Model For The Spread Of H5n1 Avian Influenza Virus Among Poultry Farms, Alexander Kasyanov, Leona Kirkland, Mihaela Teodora Matache Jan 2008

A Spatial Sirs Boolean Network Model For The Spread Of H5n1 Avian Influenza Virus Among Poultry Farms, Alexander Kasyanov, Leona Kirkland, Mihaela Teodora Matache

Mathematics Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

To predict the spread of Avian Influenza we propose a synchronous Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Susceptible (SIRS) Boolean network of poultry farms, using probabilistic Boolean rules. Gravity models from transportation theory are used for the probability of infection of a node in one time step, taking into account farm sizes, distances be- tween farms, and mean distance travelled by birds. Basic reproduction numbers are computed analytically and numerically. The dynamics of the network are analyzed and various statistics considered such as number of infected nodes or time until eradication of the epidemic. We conclude that mostly when large farms (eventually) become infected the epidemic …

Modeling Algae Self-Replenishment, V. S. Manoranjan, Miguel A. Olmos Gomez, R. Corban Harwood Jan 2008

Modeling Algae Self-Replenishment, V. S. Manoranjan, Miguel A. Olmos Gomez, R. Corban Harwood

Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics

This paper presents a sunlight-dependent algae growth model. Driven by the circumstances surrounding Lake Chapala, Mexico, this theoretical model is an endeavor to understand the resilient sustainability of algae that threatens the area’s ecosystem. In this paper, free-floating algae (phytoplankton) are treated as two distinct populations according to their location in the body of water: the vibrant sunlit upper region and the stagnate lower region where photosynthesis is not possible. The numerical solution for the model is analyzed and results are discussed in light of previous studies and the state of Lake Chapala.

The Action Map As A Tool For Assessing Situated Mathematical Problem Solving Performance, Murad Jurdak Jan 2008

The Action Map As A Tool For Assessing Situated Mathematical Problem Solving Performance, Murad Jurdak

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The aim of this paper is to investigate the appropriateness, concurrent and construct validity of action map as a tool for assessing situated problem solving performance. Action map is rooted in activity theory whose stipulations are compatible with situated problem solving. Thirty-one last year secondary students were given three tasks with real –world context. Based on the analysis of the written solutions and interviews, evidence is presented on the appropriateness and validity of action map as an instrument to assess situated problem solving performance.

Reflections Upon Teaching A Poorly-Conceived Lesson, Yuichi Handa Jan 2008

Reflections Upon Teaching A Poorly-Conceived Lesson, Yuichi Handa

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Using a “failed” mathematics lesson as a mini-case study, I explore some of the challenges inherent in teaching an inquiry-style mathematics lesson. The ensuing discussion centers around two issues: the preparation and subsequent scaffolding involved in guiding students to desired understandings, along with the tension inherent in “telling” and “not telling” in an inquiry-style pedagogy. I resort to personal reflection, as well as to Wenger’s (1998) theoretical construct of participation and reification in revealing the underlying link between the manner of lesson preparation and consequent engagement of students during the enactment of the lesson.

Our tour of multidimensional cubes begins with the marking of the eight comers of a 3-cube with the eight words HOT, POT, POD, HOD, HAD, HAT, PAT, and PAD. The figure below shows how these eight inherit the labels of the HOT-PAD).die where the letter H is opposite P, the letter O is opposite T and the letter T is opposite the letter D...

Multiscale Deformable Registration Of Noisy Medical Images, Dana C. Paquin, Doron Levy, Lei Xing Jan 2008

Multiscale Deformable Registration Of Noisy Medical Images, Dana C. Paquin, Doron Levy, Lei Xing

Mathematics

Multiscale image registration techniques are presented for the registration of medical images using deformable registration models. The techniques are particularly effective for registration problems in which one or both of the images to be registered contains significant levels of noise. A brief overview of existing deformable registration techniques is presented, and experiments using B-spline free-form deformation registration models demonstrate that ordinary deformable registration techniques fail to produce accurate results in the presence of significant levels of noise. The hierarchical multiscale image decomposition described in E. Tadmor, S. Nezzar, and L. Vese’s, ”A multiscale image representation using hierarchical (BV, L2 …

Local Geometry Of Zero Sets Of Holomorphic Functions Nears The Torus, Jim Agler, John E. Mccarthy, Mark Stankus Jan 2008

Local Geometry Of Zero Sets Of Holomorphic Functions Nears The Torus, Jim Agler, John E. Mccarthy, Mark Stankus

Mathematics

We call a holomorphic function f on a domain in Cn locally toral at the point P in the n-torus if the intersection of the zero set of f with the n-torus has dimension n−1 at P. We study the interplay between the structure of locally toral functions and the geometry of their zero sets.

Sheaf Theoretic Formulation Of Entanglement, Goro C. Kato Jan 2008

Sheaf Theoretic Formulation Of Entanglement, Goro C. Kato

Mathematics

A formulation in terms of sheaf theoretic (or categorical) notions for quantum entanglement is given with direct experimental consequences. The notions from sheaf theory and category theory give structural theory, i.e., qualitative theory, as a candidate for quantum gravity. Its advantage is the following: it provides not only space-time background independent, but also scale independent. This theory is called the theory of temporal topos (or simply t-topos theory).

Microcosm To Macrocosm Via The Notion Of A Sheaf (Observers In Terms Of T-Topos), Goro Kato Jan 2008

Microcosm To Macrocosm Via The Notion Of A Sheaf (Observers In Terms Of T-Topos), Goro Kato

Mathematics

The fundamental approach toward matter, space and time is that particles (either objects of macrocosm or microcosm), space and time are all presheafified. Namely, the concept of a presheaf is most fundamental for matter, space and time. An observation of a particle is represented by a morphism from the observed particle (its associated presheaf) to the observer (its associated presheaf) over a specified object (called a generalized time period) of a t-site (i.e. a category with a Grothendieck topology). This formulation provides a scale independent and background space-time free theory (since, for the t-topos theoretic formulation, space and time are …

A Positive Mass Theorem On Asymptotically Hyperbolic Manifolds With Corners Along A Hypersurface, Vincent Bonini, Jie Qing Jan 2008

A Positive Mass Theorem On Asymptotically Hyperbolic Manifolds With Corners Along A Hypersurface, Vincent Bonini, Jie Qing

Mathematics

In this paper we take an approach similar to that in [13] to establish a positive mass theorem for spin asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds admitting corners along a hypersurface. The main analysis uses an integral representation of a solution to a perturbed eigenfunction equation to obtain an asymptotic expansion of the solution in the right order. This allows us to understand the change of the mass aspect of a conformal change of asymptotically hyperbolic metrics.

A Manifold Structure For The Group Of Orbifold Diffeomorphisms Of A Smooth Orbifold, Joseph E. Borzellino, Victor Brunsden

Mathematics

For a compact, smooth Cr orbifold (without boundary), we show that the topological structure of the orbifold diffeomorphism group is a Banach manifold for 1 ≤ r < ∞ and a Fréchet manifold if r = ∞. In each case, the local model is the separable Banach (Fréchet) space of Cr (C, resp.) orbisections of the tangent orbibundle.

The Magic Octagon, Jeremiah Farrell, Tom Rodgers Jan 2008

The Magic Octagon, Jeremiah Farrell, Tom Rodgers

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The black nodes mark the corners of an octagon and each of these nodes in connected to four others by lines. The (rather hard) puzzle is to assign the sixteen numbers 0 through 15 to each of the sixteen lines so that each black node has a sum of 30 when the line numbers leading into it are added.

The word version of the puzzle was described in the article "Most-Perfect Word Magic", Oscar Thumpbindle, Word Ways Vol. 40(4). Nov. 2007.

Results And Examples Regarding Bifurcation With A Two-Dimensional Kernal, Scott R. Kaschner Jan 2008

Results And Examples Regarding Bifurcation With A Two-Dimensional Kernal, Scott R. Kaschner

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Many problems in pure and applied mathematics entail studying the structure of solutions to F(x; y) = 0, where F is a nonlinear operator between Banach spaces and y is a real parameter. A parameter value where the structure of solutions of F changes is called a bifurcation point. The particular method of analysis for bifurcation depends on the dimension of the kernel of DxF(0,λ), the linearization of F.

The purpose of our study was to examine some consequences of a recent theorem on bifurcations with 2-dimensional kernels. This resent theorem was compared to previous methods. Also, some …

Average Min-Sum Decoding Of Ldpc Codes, Nathan Axvig, Deanna Dreher, Katherine Morrison, Eric T. Psota, Lance C. Pérez, Judy L. Walker Jan 2008

Average Min-Sum Decoding Of Ldpc Codes, Nathan Axvig, Deanna Dreher, Katherine Morrison, Eric T. Psota, Lance C. Pérez, Judy L. Walker

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Simulations have shown that the outputs of minsum (MS) decoding generally behave in one of two ways: the output either eventually stabilizes at a codeword or eventually cycles through a finite set of vectors that may include both codewords and non-codewords. This inconsistency in MS across iterations has significantly contributed to the difficulty in studying the performance of this decoder. To overcome this problem, a new decoder, average min-sum (AMS), is proposed; this decoder outputs the average of the min-sum output vectors over a finite set of iterations. Simulations comparing MS, AMS, linear programming (LP) decoding, and maximum likelihood (ML) …

Towards Universal Cover Decoding, Nathan Axvig, Deanna Dreher, Katherine Morrison, Eric T. Psota, Lance C. Pérez, Judy L. Walker

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Low complexity decoding of low-density paritycheck (LDPC) codes may be obtained from the application of iterative message-passing decoding algorithms to the bipartite Tanner graph of the code. Arguably, the two most important decoding algorithms for LDPC codes are the sum-product decoder and the min-sum (MS) decoder. On a bipartite graph without cycles (a tree), the sum-product decoder minimizes the probability of bit error, while the min-sum decoder minimizes the probability of word error [9]. While the behavior of sum-product and min-sum is easily understood when operating on trees, their behavior becomes much more difficult to characterize when the Tanner graph …

Optimal Control Of Delay-Differential Inclusions With Multivalued Initial Conditions In Infinite Dimensions, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Dong Wang, Lianwen Wang Jan 2008

Optimal Control Of Delay-Differential Inclusions With Multivalued Initial Conditions In Infinite Dimensions, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Dong Wang, Lianwen Wang

Mathematics Research Reports

This paper is devoted to the study of a general class of optimal control problems described by delay-differential inclusions with infinite-dimensional state spaces, endpoints constraints, and multivalued initial conditions. To the best of our knowledge, problems of this type have not been considered in the literature, except some particular cases when either the state space is finite-dimensional or there is no delay in the dynamics. We develop the method of discrete approximations to derive necessary optimality conditions in the extended Euler-Lagrange form by using advanced tools of variational analysis and generalized differentiation in infinite dimensions. This method consists of the …

Highly Connected Multicoloured Subgraphs Of Multicoloured Graphs, H. Liu, R. Morris, N. Prince

Faculty Publications & Research

Suppose the edges of the complete graph on n vertices, E(Kn), are coloured using r colours; how large a k-connected subgraph are we guaranteed to find, which uses only at most s of the colours? This question is due to Bollobás, and the case s=1 was considered in Liu et al. [Highly connected monochromatic subgraphs of multicoloured graphs, J. Graph Theory, to appear]. Here we shall consider the case s is greater than or equal to 2, proving in particular that when s=2 and r+1 is a power of 2 then the answer lies between 4n/(r+1)-17kr(r+2k+1) and 4n/(r+1)+4 and that …

A Comparison Of Different Methods For Predicting Cancer Mortality Counts At The State Level, Corinne Wilson

Virginia Journal of Science

Cancer is a major health issue in the United States. Reliable estimates of yearly cancer mortality counts are essential for resourcing and planning. The American Cancer Society has used several methods of forecasting to estimate the future cancer burden and researchers are continually working to develop new methods with improved performance. There have been studies comparing different models for predicting the US cancer mortality counts. This study explores and compares several different models for cancer mortality count predictions at the state level, principally for the state of Virginia. Results of the comparisons appear to show the final improved model to …

Dynamic Web Tools For Trigonometry, Steven J. Wilson Jan 2008

Dynamic Web Tools For Trigonometry, Steven J. Wilson

Innovations in Math Technology

In the last 20 years, computer technology having mathematical capability has been developed, improved, and become widely available, but textbook presentations are still largely free of any discussion that might require technology. Technology could be used in mathematical instruction for student drill and practice, for instructor demonstrations that promote conceptual understanding, or for the exploration of mathematical ideas, but software is often designed to be pedagogically generic, leaving its use to the creativity of the instructor. Technological solutions for local machines can be quite extensive, but cost and time constraints then limit availability for student use. The internet has the …
