The Duals Of Warfield Groups, Peter Loth
The Duals Of Warfield Groups, Peter Loth
Mathematics Faculty Publications
A Warfield group is a direct summand of a simply presented abelian group. In this paper, we describe the Pontrjagin dual groups of Warfield groups, both for the p-local and the general case. A variety of characterizations of these dual groups is obtained. In addition, numerical invariants are given that distinguish between two such groups which are not topologically isomorphic.

Random Processes With Convex Coordinates On Triangular Graphs, J. N. Boyd, P. N. Raychowdhury
Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Publications
Probabilities for reaching specified destinations and expectation values for lengths for random walks on triangular arrays of points and edges are computed. Probabilities and expectation values are given as functions of the convex (barycentric) coordinates of the starting point.
Elimination Of Supply Harmonics, Stephen L. Clark, P. Famouri, W. L. Cooley
Elimination Of Supply Harmonics, Stephen L. Clark, P. Famouri, W. L. Cooley
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The price of the extensive use of power electronic devices is becoming clear: increasing harmonic "pollution." The greater amount of harmonics being introduced into power distribution systems is of concern to both power consumers and power companies. First, a brief look is taken at background information which describes harmonic sources, effects, and characteristics. Then the evolution of the harmonics elimination approaches of current compensation and active filtering are discussed to give some insight into the directions that research is taking.
On The Behavior Of The Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equations At Vanishing Viscosity, Roger Temam, Xiaoming Wang
On The Behavior Of The Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equations At Vanishing Viscosity, Roger Temam, Xiaoming Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this article we establish partial results concerning the convergence of the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations to that of the Euler equations. Namely, we prove convergence on any finite interval of time, in space dimension two, under a physically reasonable assumption. We consider the flow in a channel or the flow in a general bounded domain.

Time Averaged Energy Dissipation Rate For Shear Driven Flows In ℝⁿ, Xiaoming Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We drive an upper bound of the time averaged energy dissipation rate for boundary driven flows directly from the Navier-Stokes equations in ℝn. the upper bound is independent of the kinematic viscosity in accordance with Kolomogorov's scaling result. Disconjugacy And Transformations For Symplectic Systems, Martin Bohner, Ondřej Došlý
Disconjugacy And Transformations For Symplectic Systems, Martin Bohner, Ondřej Došlý
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We examine transformations and diconjugacy for general symplectic systems which include as special cases linear Hamiltonian difference systems and Sturm-Liouville difference equations of higher order. We give a Reid roundabout theorem for these systems and also for reciprocal symplectic systems. Particularly, we investigate a connection between eventual disconjugacy of linear Hamiltonian difference systems and their reciprocals. Finally, we present a dinsconjugacy-preserving transformation of a Sturm-Liouville equation of higher order which transforms this equation into another one of the same order.
Combinatorics Of Open Covers (Iii): Games, CP(X), Marion Scheepers
Combinatorics Of Open Covers (Iii): Games, CP(X), Marion Scheepers
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Some of the covering properties of spaces as defined in Parts I and II are here characterized by games. These results, applied to function spaces Cp(X) of countable tightness, give new characterizations of countable fan tightness and countable strong fan tightness. In particular, each of these properties is characterized by a Ramseyan theorem.

Integrable Smooth Planar Billiards And Evolutes, Edoh Y. Amiran
Integrable Smooth Planar Billiards And Evolutes, Edoh Y. Amiran
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Any elliptic region is an example of an integrable domain: the set of tangents to a confocal ellipse or hyperbola remains invariant under reflection across the normal to the boundary. The main result states that when Ω is a strictly convex bounded planar domain with a smooth boundary and is integrable near the boundary, its boundary is necessarily an ellipse. The proof is based on the fact that ellipses satisfy a certain “transitivity property”, and that this characterizes ellipses among smooth strictly convex closed planar curves. To establish the transitivity property, KAM theory is used with a perturbation of the …

Diagonal Operators, S-Numbers, And Bernstein Pairs, Asuman Güven Aksoy, Grzegorz Lewicki
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
Replacing the nested sequence of ''finite" dimensional subspaces by the nested sequence of "closed" subspaces in the classical Bernstein lethargy theorem, we obtain a version of this theorem for the space B(X , Y) of all bounded linear maps. Using this result and some properties of diagonal operators, we investigate conditions under which a suitable pair of Banach spaces form an exact Bernstein pair.We also show that many "classical" Banach spaces, including the couple (Lp [O, 1] , Lq[O, 1]) form a Bernstein pair with respect to any sequence of s-numbers (sn) ,for 1 < p < ∞ and 1 ≤ q < ∞ …

On The Level Crossing Of Multi-Dimensional Delayed Renewal Processes, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow
On The Level Crossing Of Multi-Dimensional Delayed Renewal Processes, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
The paper studies the behavior of an (l+3)th-dimensional, delayed renewal process with dependent components, the first three (called active) of which are to cross one of their respective thresholds. More specifically, the crossing takes place when at least one of the active components reaches or exceeds its assigned level. The values of the other two active components, as well as the rest of the components (passive), are to be registered. The analysis yields the joint functional of the crossing level and other characteristics (some of which can be interpreted as the first passage time) in a closed form, refining earlier …

Lyapunov Exponents Of Linear Stochastic Functional-Differential Equations. Ii. Examples And Case Studies, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Michael K. R. Scheutzow
Articles and Preprints
We give several examples and examine case studies of linear stochastic functional differential equations. The examples fall into two broad classes: regular and singular, according to whether an underlying stochastic semi-flow exists or not. In the singular case, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the maximal exponential growth rate $\overlineλ1$(σ) of the trajectories expressed in terms of the noise variance σ . Roughly speaking we show that for small σ, $\overlineλ1$(σ) behaves like -σ2 /2, while for large σ, it grows like logσ. In the regular case, it is shown that a discrete Oseledec …

Singular Nonlinear (N-1,1) Conjugate Boundary Value Problems, Paul W. Eloe, Johnny Henderson
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Solutions are obtained for the boundary value problem, y (n) + f(x,y) = 0, y (i)(0) = y(1) = 0, 0 i n – 2, where f(x,y) is singular at y = 0. An application is made of a fixed point theorem for operators that are decreasing with respect to a cone.
A Boundary Value Problem For A System Of Ordinary Differential Equations With Impulse Effects, Paul W. Eloe, Johnny Henderson
A Boundary Value Problem For A System Of Ordinary Differential Equations With Impulse Effects, Paul W. Eloe, Johnny Henderson
Mathematics Faculty Publications
A two-point boundary value problem for a system of first-order ordinary differential equations with impulse effects is studied. The method of upper and lower solutions is employed to obtain the existence of a solution and a method of forced monotonicity is employed to obtain iterative improvement. The main result is illustrated with an application to the Liénard equation with periodic boundary conditions.

Convolution And Fourier-Feynman Transforms, Chull Park, David Skough
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
In this paper, for a class of funtionals on Wiener space of the form F(x) = exp{∫T0 f(t, x(t)) dt}, we show that the Fourier-Feynman transform of the convolution product is a product of Fourier-Feynman transforms. This allows us to compute the transform of the convolution product without computing the convolution product.

Ip Cluster Points Idempotents, And Recurrent Sequences, K. N. Haddad, Aimee S.A. Johnson
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
We consider the dynamical system (M,S) where M is the orbit closure of a nonperiodic recurrent sequence of O's and 1's (for example, the Morse sequence) and S is the shift map. The enveloping semigroup is E(M) = {Sⁿ : n ∈ Z} where the closure is taken in the topology of pointwise convergence. H. Furstenberg was the first to establish the existence of relationships between recurrence, IP sets, and idempotents in the enveloping semigroup, and the first author has proven that the closure of the set of idempotents coincides with the IP cluster points. In this paper the authors …
