Some Results About Basic Elements, Cancellation And Efficient Generation Of Modules Over Laurent Polynomial Rings., S. Mandal Dr. Feb 1983

Some Results About Basic Elements, Cancellation And Efficient Generation Of Modules Over Laurent Polynomial Rings., S. Mandal Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Unless otherwise stated all rings are assumed to be commutative and Noetherian with finite Krull dimension and modules are finitely generated. There are three related questions in commutative algebra. They are about the existence of unimodular elements in projective modules, cancellation of projective modules and minimal number of generators for finitely generated modules. In particular, determining the minimal number of generators of ideals is also of great interest in this area.In this thesis we shall be concerned with the above questions in the case of Laurent polynomial rings. The thesis consists of three Chapters. The main results are presented in Chapters …

Some Contributions To Bayes, Minimax And Admissible Decision Rules In One Parameter And Multiparameter Families., Anirban Das Gupta Dr. Feb 1983

Some Contributions To Bayes, Minimax And Admissible Decision Rules In One Parameter And Multiparameter Families., Anirban Das Gupta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The study of admissible, minimax, and Bayes procedures has been of primary importance ever since the pioneering work of Wald (50). Since early seventies, new directions have been opening up, and not merely new techniques, completely new interpretations and interrelations have come to be known. To prove admissibility of estimates the most commonly used technique is to show that it is extended Bayes and approximate its risk by the risk of the corresponding Bayes estimates. This technique is due to Blyth (51). A sort of conver se result, which cssentially shows that this technique must work for all admissible est imates …

Extension Of Compartmental Parameters To Blocks Of Compartments With Application To Lipoprotein Kinetics, S. M. Grundy, Jerome Eisenfeld Feb 1983

Extension Of Compartmental Parameters To Blocks Of Compartments With Application To Lipoprotein Kinetics, S. M. Grundy, Jerome Eisenfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers

Suppose that the compartments of a compartmental model are separated into blocks (sets of compartments). In general, the blocks can not be regarded as compartments but it may be possible to construct a "condensation model," the compartments of which correspond to the blocks, in such a fashion so as to retain certain salient properties of the blocks. Condensation is a way of formally summarizing a large model by presenting a smaller one in order to emphasize certain characteristics.of the larger model. Suppose that the parameters to be retained are the mean residence times through the blocks. The paper deals with …

On The Theory Of Homogeneous Lipschitz Spaces And Campanato Spaces, Harvey Greenwald

Mathematics

In this paper the equivalence between the Campanato spaces and homogeneous Lipschitz spaces is shown through the use of elementary and constructive means. These Lipschitz spaces can be defined in terms of derivatives as well as differences.

Homomorphisms For Equidistance Relations, Thomas Q. Sibley Jan 1983

Homomorphisms For Equidistance Relations, Thomas Q. Sibley

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper presents necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of homomorphisms for equidistance relations in terms of the closed subsystems (the Fundamental Theorem of Homomorphisms). Further, it shows that every closed subsystem of a 1-point homogenous equidistance system is a coset of a unique homomorphism. Affine spaces and other incidence geometries can be seen as examples of equidistance systems.

Alternatives In Quantum Theory, Richard C. Heyser Jan 1983

Alternatives In Quantum Theory, Richard C. Heyser

Unpublished Writings

Quantum mechanical descriptions in terms of momentum and position are identified as alternatives under the condition of equal complex-vaulted Lebesgue square integrability. While this does not change any of the formal results obtained in quantum mechanics, it does shed a different interpretive light on the steps that lead up to these results. Instead of being independent, even in concept, momentum and position are identified as being the same thing, merely seen from different views. Neither is required to complement the descriptive capability of the other, since each forms a complete alternative in its own right. Apparent complementarity, as well as …

The Least Fixed Point Property For Ω-Chain Continuous Functions, Joe Mashburn Jan 1983

The Least Fixed Point Property For Ω-Chain Continuous Functions, Joe Mashburn

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A partially ordered set P is ω-chain complete if every countable chain (including the empty set) in P has a supremum. … Notice that an ω-chain continuous function must preserve order. P has the (least) fixed point property for ω-chain continuous functions if every ω-chain continuous function from P to itself has (least) fixed point.

It has been shown that a partially ordered set does not have to be ω-chain complete to have the least fixed point property for ω-chain continuous functions. This answers a question posed by G. Plotkin in 1978. I.I. Kolodner has shown that an ω-chain complete …

We show that, for multi-tape Turing machines, non-deterministic linear time is more deterministic Turing machines (that receive their input on their work tape) require time Q(n2) to powerful than deterministic linear time. We also recognize non-palindromes of length n (it is easy to discuss the prospects for extending this result to see that time O(n log n) is. sufficient for a more general Turing machines. non-deterministic machine). 1. New Relativistic Paradoxes And Open Questions, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Following the Special Theory of Relativity, Florentin Smarandache generalized the Lorentz Contraction Factor to an Oblique-Contraction Factor, which gives the contraction factor of the lengths moving at an oblique angle with respect to the motion direction. He also proved that relativistic moving bodies are distorted, and he computed the Angle-Distortion Equations.

He then showed several paradoxes, inconsistencies, contradictions, and anomalies in the Theory of Relativity.

According to the author, not all physical laws are the same in all inertial reference frames, and he gives several counter-examples. He also supports superluminal speeds, and he considers that the …

The Design And Implementation Of A Tutorial Program To Perform Symbolic Mathematics, Richard Derek Otieno Jan 1983

The Design And Implementation Of A Tutorial Program To Perform Symbolic Mathematics, Richard Derek Otieno

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to design and implement a program that could be used for a drill in symbolic mathematics. The scope of the program with respect to the range of problems that it solves is limited to selected types from elementary algebra, trigonometry, differential calculus, and integral calculus. The program is designed, not only to give solutions (answers), but also to provide several of the intermediate steps leading to the final result.

FORMAC73 and PL/1 are used to implement the program. FORMAC73 is a system and a language for manipulating mathematical expressions, symbolically. The facilities of PL/1 …

Quasi-Molecular, Particle Modeling Of Crack Generation And Fracture, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

In this paper a new, particle-type approach is developed for the simulation of crack generation and fracture. Rectangular plates are modeled as particle aggregates and then stressed by using molecular type force formulas. Computer examples which include wedges and holes are described and discussed.
