The Application Of Brzdek's Fixed Point Theorem In The Stability Problem Of The Drygas Functional Equation, Mehdi Dehghanian, Yamin Sayyari

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Using the Brzdek fixed point theorem, we establish the Hyers?Ulam stability problem of Drygas functional equations \begin{equation} \delta(x+y-z)+\delta(x-y)+\delta(-y-z)+\delta(y)=\delta(x-y-z)+\delta(y-z)+\delta(x+y)+\delta(-y)\nonumber \end{equation} for all $x,y,z\in A$.

Modification Of The Sector Theorem Of Kondo-Tanaka, Eric Choi Sep 2023

Modification Of The Sector Theorem Of Kondo-Tanaka, Eric Choi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Kondo-Tanaka proved that if a rotationally symmetric plane $M_m$ is von Mangoldt or Cartan-Hadamard outside a compact set and has finite total curvature, then it has a sector with no pair of cut points. We show that the condition of finite total curvature can be removed. %The abstract should provide clear information about the research and the results obtained, and should not exceed 200 words. The abstract should not contain citations.

A Short Note On A New Approach To Rayleigh-Bénard-Chandrasekhar Convection In Weakly Electrically Conducting Viscoelastic Liquids, Hati̇ce Muti̇ Sep 2023

A Short Note On A New Approach To Rayleigh-Bénard-Chandrasekhar Convection In Weakly Electrically Conducting Viscoelastic Liquids, Hati̇ce Muti̇

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The onset of magnetoconvection (known as Rayleigh-Bénard-Chandrasekhar convection) in two relaxation time viscoelastic liquids is studied here without seeking explicit recourse to a normal stress formulation as is usually done in these studies. Magnetoconvection refers to the flow of fluid in the presence of both thermal gradients (Rayleigh-Bénard convection) and a magnetic field. When these two effects are combined, they can lead to interesting and complex patterns of fluid motion. Understanding magnetoconvection in viscoelastic liquids is crucial for various industrial and scientific applications. The hyperbolic-type of linear momentum equation is decomposed into two first-order equations in time by cleverly separating …

On Positive Periodic Solutions To Third-Order Integro-Differential Equations With Distributed Delays, Mimia Benhadri, Tomas Caraballo

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we investigate the existence of positive periodic solutions of a third-order nonlinear integro-differential equation with distributed delays, by using the Green function and the Krasnosel'skii fixed point theorem in cones of Banach spaces, providing new results on this field. Three examples are analyzed to illustrate the effectiveness of the abstract results.

Identities Involving Special Functions From Hypergeometric Solution Of Algebraic Equations, Juan Luis Gonzalez-Santander Sep 2023

Identities Involving Special Functions From Hypergeometric Solution Of Algebraic Equations, Juan Luis Gonzalez-Santander

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

From the algebraic solution of $x^{m}-x+t=0$ for $m=2,3,4$ and the corresponding solution in terms of hypergeometric functions, we obtain a set of reduction formulas for hypergeometric functions. By differentiation and integration of these results, and applying other known reduction formulas of hypergeometric functions, we derive new reduction formulas of special functions as well as the calculation of some definite integrals in terms of elementary functions.

The Taylor Resolution Over A Skew Polynomial Ring, Luigi Ferraro, Desiree Martin, W. Frank Moore Sep 2023

The Taylor Resolution Over A Skew Polynomial Ring, Luigi Ferraro, Desiree Martin, W. Frank Moore

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let k be a field and let I be a monomial ideal in the polynomial ring Q = k[x1, . . . , xn]. In her thesis, Taylor introduced a complex which provides a finite free resolution for Q/I as a Q-module. Later, Gemeda constructed a differential graded structure on the Taylor resolution. More recently, Avramov showed that this differential graded algebra admits divided powers. We generalize each of these results to monomial ideals in a skew polynomial ring R. Under the hypothesis that the skew commuting parameters defining R are roots of unity, we prove as an application that …

Superoscillations And Fock Spaces, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa Sep 2023

Superoscillations And Fock Spaces, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we use techniques in Fock spaces theory and compute how the Segal-Bargmann transform acts on special wave functions obtained by multiplying superoscillating sequences with normalized Hermite functions. It turns out that these special wave functions can be constructed also by computing the approximating sequence of the normalized Hermite functions. First, we start by treating the case when a superoscillating sequence is multiplied by the Gaussian function. Then, we extend these calculations to the case of normalized Hermite functions leading to interesting relations with Weyl operators. In particular, we show that the Segal-Bargmann transform maps superoscillating sequences onto …

Machine Learning And Causality For Interpretable And Automated Decision Making, Maria Lentini Sep 2023

Machine Learning And Causality For Interpretable And Automated Decision Making, Maria Lentini

Theses and Dissertations

This abstract explores two key areas in decision science: automated and interpretable decision making. In the first part, we address challenges related to sparse user interaction data and high item turnover rates in recommender systems. We introduce a novel algorithm called Multi-View Interactive Collaborative Filtering (MV-ICTR) that integrates user-item ratings and contextual information, improving performance, particularly for cold-start scenarios. In the second part, we focus on Student Prescription Trees (SPTs), which are interpretable decision trees. These trees use a black box "teacher" model to predict counterfactuals based on observed covariates. We experiment with a Bayesian hierarchical binomial regression model as …

Joint Semiparametric Kernel Network Regression, Byung Jun Kim, Inyoung Kim Sep 2023

Joint Semiparametric Kernel Network Regression, Byung Jun Kim, Inyoung Kim

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 2

Variable selection and graphical modeling play essential roles in highly correlated and high-dimensional (HCHD) data analysis. Variable selection methods have been developed under both parametric and nonparametric model settings. However, variable selection for nonadditive, nonparametric regression with high-dimensional variables is challenging due to complications in modeling unknown dependence structures among HCHD variables. Gaussian graphical models are a popular and useful tool for investigating the conditional dependence between variables via estimating sparse precision matrices. For a given class of interest, the estimated precision matrices can be mapped onto networks for visualization. However, the limitation of Gaussian graphical models is that they …

Approaches To Assessing Nutrient Coupling In Open Ocean Datasets, James M. Moore, Claire P. Till Sep 2023

Approaches To Assessing Nutrient Coupling In Open Ocean Datasets, James M. Moore, Claire P. Till

IdeaFest: Interdisciplinary Journal of Creative Works and Research from Cal Poly Humboldt

Nutrient coupling describes a process where the biogeochemical cycles of two elements are linked by being incorporated similarly into biomass. This paper uses data from the GEOTRACES GP16 cruise (Eastern Pacific Zonal Transect) to investigate the relationship between certain macronutrients generally coupled to trace elements in terms of their oceanic distributions with the notable exception of in an oxygen minimum zone: cadmium-phosphate and zinc-silicate. There are many methods applied to oceanographic data to correlate analyte concentrations; while they are often presented independently in literature, here we attempt to use them in conjunction for a more thorough interpretation. By compiling 1) …

On Nowhere Zero 4-Flows In Regular Matroids, Xiaofeng Wang, Taoye Zhang, Ju Zhou

Theory and Applications of Graphs

Walton and Welsh proved that if a co-loopless regular matroid M does not have a minor in {M(K(3,3)),M(K5)}, then M admits a nowhere zero 4-flow. Lai, Li and Poon proved that if M does not have a minor in {M(K5),M(K5)}, then M admits a nowhere zero 4-flow. We prove that if a co-loopless regular matroid M does not have a minor in {M((P10)¯3 ),M(K5)}, then M admits a nowhere zero 4-flow where (P10)¯3 is the graph obtained from the Petersen graph P10by contracting 3 edges of a perfect matching. As …

A New Capacity In The Class Of ShM Functions Defined By Laplace Operator, Nurali Akramov, Khakimboy Egamberganov Sep 2023

A New Capacity In The Class Of ShM Functions Defined By Laplace Operator, Nurali Akramov, Khakimboy Egamberganov

Bulletin of National University of Uzbekistan: Mathematics and Natural Sciences

In this paper, we define a new capacity Δm on the class of shm functions, which is defined by Laplace operator. We prove that Δm-capacity satisfies Choquet’s axioms of measurability. Moreover, we compare our capacity with Sadullaev-Abdullaev capacities. In particular, it implies that Δm-capacity of a set E is zero if and only if E is a m-polar set.

Gibbs Measures Of Models With Uncountable Set Of Spin Values On Lattice Systems, Farhod Haydarov Sep 2023

Gibbs Measures Of Models With Uncountable Set Of Spin Values On Lattice Systems, Farhod Haydarov

Bulletin of National University of Uzbekistan: Mathematics and Natural Sciences

In this paper, we shall discuss the construction of Gibbs measures for models with uncountable set of spin values on Cayley trees. It is known that "translation-invariant Gibbs measures" of the model with an uncountable set of spin values can be described by positive fixed points of a nonlinear integral operator of Hammerstein type. The problem of constructing a kernel with non-uniqueness of the integral operator is sufficient in Gibbs measure theory. In this paper, we construct a degenerate kernel in which the number of solutions does not exceed 3, and in turn, it only gives us a chance to …

A Novel Fuzzy Relative-Position-Coding Transformer For Breast Cancer Diagnosis Using Ultrasonography, Yanhui Guo, Ruquan Jiang, Xin Gu, Heng-Da Cheng, Harish Garg

Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications

Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in women worldwide, and early detection is crucial for successful treatment. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been developed to assist doctors in identifying breast cancer on ultrasound images. In this paper, we propose a novel fuzzy relative-position-coding (FRPC) Transformer to classify breast ultrasound (BUS) images for breast cancer diagnosis. The proposed FRPC Transformer utilizes the self-attention mechanism of Transformer networks combined with fuzzy relative-position-coding to capture global and local features of the BUS images. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated on one benchmark dataset and compared with those obtained by …

Individual Difference Correlates Of Being Sexually Unrestricted Yet Declining An Hiv Test, Nicholas S. Holtzman, Stephen W. Carden, Stacy W. Smallwood, Janice Steirn, S. Mason Garrison

Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

Which individual differences accurately predict one’s decision to get tested for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and do individuals who have regular short-term sex get tested at higher rates? Two studies—one lab study (total valid N = 69, with n = 20 who were tested) and one involving a student health center (valid N = 250, n = 4 who were tested)—involved participants (total valid N = 319, with n = 24 who got tested) taking a number of personality and individual difference measures, including the dark triad (Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy). Then, in both studies, participants had the opportunity to …

The Mean Sum Of Squared Linking Numbers Of Random Piecewise-Linear Embeddings Of $K_N$, Yasmin Aguillon, Xingyu Cheng, Spencer Eddins, Pedro Morales Sep 2023

The Mean Sum Of Squared Linking Numbers Of Random Piecewise-Linear Embeddings Of $K_N$, Yasmin Aguillon, Xingyu Cheng, Spencer Eddins, Pedro Morales

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

DNA and other polymer chains in confined spaces behave like closed loops. Arsuaga et al. \cite{AB} introduced the uniform random polygon model in order to better understand such loops in confined spaces using probabilistic and knot theoretical techniques, giving some classification on the mean squared linking number of such loops. Flapan and Kozai \cite{flapan2016linking} extended these techniques to find the mean sum of squared linking numbers for random linear embeddings of complete graphs $K_n$ and found it to have order $\Theta(n(n!))$. We further these ideas by inspecting random piecewise-linear embeddings of complete graphs and give introductory-level summaries of the ideas …

Multi-Symplectic Simulation On Soliton-Collision For Nonlinear Perturbed Schrödinger Equation, Peijun Zhang, Weipeng Hu, Zhen Wang, Zhijun Qiao

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Seeking solitary wave solutions and revealing their interactional characteristics for nonlinear evolution equations help us lot to comprehend the motion laws of the microparticles. As a local nonlinear dynamic behavior, the soliton-collision is difficult to be reproduced numerically. In this paper, the soliton-collision process in the nonlinear perturbed Schrödinger equation is simulated employing the multi-symplectic method. The multi-symplectic formulations are derived including the multi-symplectic form and three local conservation laws of the nonlinear perturbed Schrödinger equation. Employing the implicit midpoint rule, we construct a multi-symplectic scheme, which is equivalent to the Preissmann box scheme, for the nonlinear perturbed Schrödinger equation. …

Normalized Solutions For Sobolev Critical Schrödinger-Bopp-Podolsky Systems, Yuxin Li, Xiaojun Chang, Zhaosheng Feng

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study the Sobolev critical Schr¨odinger-Bopp-Podolsky system −∆u + φu = λu + µ|u|p−2u + |u|4u in R3, −∆φ + ∆2φ = 4πu2 in R3, under the mass constraint u2 dx = c R3 for some prescribed c > 0, where 2 < p < 8/3, µ > 0 is a parameter, and λ ∈ R is a Lagrange multiplier. By developing a constraint minimizing approach, we show that the above system admits a local minimizer. Furthermore, we establish the existence of normalized ground state solutions.

Many-Valued Coalgebraic Logic: From Boolean Algebras To Primal Varieties, Alexander Kurz, Wolfgang Poiger Sep 2023

Many-Valued Coalgebraic Logic: From Boolean Algebras To Primal Varieties, Alexander Kurz, Wolfgang Poiger

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We study many-valued coalgebraic logics with primal algebras of truth-degrees. We describe a way to lift algebraic semantics of classical coalgebraic logics, given by an endofunctor on the variety of Boolean algebras, to this many-valued setting, and we show that many important properties of the original logic are inherited by its lifting. Then, we deal with the problem of obtaining a concrete axiomatic presentation of the variety of algebras for this lifted logic, given that we know one for the original one. We solve this problem for a class of presentations which behaves well with respect to a lattice structure …

Reversibility Of Stranded Cellular Automata, Allyn Loyd Sep 2023

Reversibility Of Stranded Cellular Automata, Allyn Loyd

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Cellular automata, such as the Stranded Cellular Automaton (SCA) model created by Joshua and Lana Holden, can be used to model weaving patterns. Similar models can be constructed to model macrame patterns, where strands are knotted together. If a rule is injective, then it is reversible. If a rule is surjective, then every configuration has at least one predecessor. In this paper, we will discuss the injectivity and surjectivity of several new SCA models in order to find reversible rules. We will also analyze the number of configurations with no predecessors and the number of configurations that map to the …

When Is It Beneficial To Merge Two Companies? When Is It Beneficial To Start A Research Collaboration?, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Merging two companies or splitting a company into two, teaming of two researchers or two research groups -- or splitting a research group into two -- these are frequent occurrences. Sometimes these actions lead to increased effectiveness, but sometimes, contrary to the optimistic expectations, the overall effectiveness decreases. To minimize the possibility of such failures, it is desirable to replace the current semi-intuitive way of making the corresponding decisions with a more objective approach. In this paper, we propose such an approach.

Neutrosophic Adaptive Lsb And Deep Learning Hybrid Framework For Ecg Signal Classification, Abdallah Rezk, Ahmed S. Sakr, H. M. Abdulkader

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper proposes a novel hybrid framework for ECG signal classification and privacy preservation. The framework includes two phases: the first phase uses LSTM+CNN with attention gate for ECG classification, while the second phase utilizes adaptive least signal bit with neutrosophic for hiding important data during transmission. The proposed framework converts data into three sets of degrees (true, false, and intermediate) using neutrosophic and passes them to an embedding layer. In the sender part, the framework hides important data in ECG signal as true and false degrees, using the intermediate set as a shared dynamic key between sender and receiver. …

Compatibility Of Clique Clustering Algorithm With Dimensionality Reduction, Ug ̆Ur Madran, Duygu Soyog ̆Lu Sep 2023

Compatibility Of Clique Clustering Algorithm With Dimensionality Reduction, Ug ̆Ur Madran, Duygu Soyog ̆Lu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In our previous work, we introduced a clustering algorithm based on clique formation. Cliques, the obtained clusters, are constructed by choosing the most dense complete subgraphs by using similarity values between instances. The clique algorithm successfully reduces the number of instances in a data set without substantially changing the accuracy rate. In this current work, we focused on reducing the number of features. For this purpose, the effect of the clique clustering algorithm on dimensionality reduction has been analyzed. We propose a novel algorithm for support vector machine classification by combining these two techniques and applying different strategies by differentiating …

Optimal Control Analysis Of The Dynamics Of Covid-19 With Application To Ethiopian Data, Temesgen Duresa Keno, Fekadu Mosisa Legesse, Ebisa Olana Bajira

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we proposed an optimal control of the COVID-19 transmission dynamics. First, we investigated system features such as solution boundedness, positivity, disease-free and endemic equilibrium, and the local and global stability of equilibrium points. Besides, a disease-free equilibrium point is globally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number is less than one, and an endemic equilibrium point exists otherwise. Secondly, we have shown the sensitivity analysis of the basic reproduction number. Also the model is then fitted using COVID-19 infected reported in Ethiopia from February 1,2023 to March 2,2023. The values of model parameters are then estimated from …
