Polyethylene Glycol Containing Rompolymers For The Modification Of Neuro-Protective Hemoglobin, Andrea L. Mccollum
Polyethylene Glycol Containing Rompolymers For The Modification Of Neuro-Protective Hemoglobin, Andrea L. Mccollum
Honors College Theses
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has shown the ability to improve compatibility when used in combination with cell-free hemoglobin in the treatment of traumatic brain injuries. It has been demonstrated that the covalently bonded PEG increases the hydrodynamic radius of the hemoglobin and hence generates a physical barrier while slowing down the oxygen delivery of the strongly oxidative hemoglobin. In this context, I have been working on the development of synthetic pathways to incorporate PEG into monomers and polymers through both direct modification of (7-oxa)norbornene derivatives and post polymerization modification. Starting from the (7-oxa)norbornene anhydride derivatives, we have developed pathways to cationic …

A Comparison Of Clustering And Missing Data Methods For Health Sciences, Ran Zhao, Deanna Needell, Christopher Johansen, Jerry L. Grenard
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
In this paper, we compare and analyze clustering methods with missing data in health behavior research. In particular, we propose and analyze the use of compressive sensing's matrix completion along with spectral clustering to cluster health related data. The empirical tests and real data results show that these methods can outperform standard methods like LPA and FIML, in terms of lower misclassification rates in clustering and better matrix completion performance in missing data problems. According to our examination, a possible explanation of these improvements is that spectral clustering takes advantage of high data dimension and compressive sensing methods utilize the …
Deep Learning Via Stacked Sparse Autoencoders For Automated Voxel-Wise Brain Parcellation Based On Functional Connectivity, Céline Gravelines
Deep Learning Via Stacked Sparse Autoencoders For Automated Voxel-Wise Brain Parcellation Based On Functional Connectivity, Céline Gravelines
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Functional brain parcellation – the delineation of brain regions based on functional connectivity – is an active research area lacking an ideal subject-specific solution independent of anatomical composition, manual feature engineering, or heavily labelled examples. Deep learning is a cutting-edge area of machine learning on the forefront of current artificial intelligence developments. Specifically, autoencoders are artificial neural networks which can be stacked to form hierarchical sparse deep models from which high-level features are compressed, organized, and extracted, without labelled training data, allowing for unsupervised learning. This thesis presents a novel application of stacked sparse autoencoders to the problem of parcellating …

Student Growth Measures For Teacher And Principal Evaluations, Suzanne Franco, Allison Mueller
Symposium of Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials
There were three Ohio research efforts about Student Growth Measures (SGM) for Teacher and Principal Evaluations: 1) extended testing for previously non-‐tested subjects and grades, 2) relationship between the teacher and principal evaluation systems’ implementation plans, and 3) an empirical study of Local Education Agencies’ (LEA) year-‐end evaluation data from 2013. In 2011-‐2012 Ohio offered a 2 year mini-‐grant to LEAs agreeing to administer extended testing for Value-‐Added measures (VAM) in grades and content areas not represented in the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA). The mini-‐grant allowed the state to create testing pools sufficient to produce teacher-‐level VAMs. American College Testing …

Stander Symposium Projects
A young woman named Aegean is summoned by the Oracle of her village to go on a journey to defeat an evil civilization at the center of the Three Villages. Though Aegean is independent, strong-willed, and assertive, she does not know her way. With the accompaniment of Maeve, a woman warrior, and Fumito, a cloistered sage, Aegean has a model of femininity and a model of masculinity to guide her in creating her own identity. They face perils on their quest, such as deadly creatures, private struggles – even death. Yet, while they travel they learn about the history of …

Related Self-Motives? Examining The Association Between Self-Verification And Self-Handicapping
Related Self-Motives? Examining The Association Between Self-Verification And Self-Handicapping
Stander Symposium Projects
This research examines the association between self-verification and self-handicapping. Self-verification theory states that people tend to seek information verifying how individuals see themselves. Individuals seek verifying feedback about traits or attributes when they are certain about that attribute, regardless of whether the attribute is positive or negative. However, when individuals are uncertain about a particular trait, they tend to engage in a self-presentational strategy called self-handicapping. Self-handicapping is a self-protecting behavior that mitigates the effect of a potential failure that would otherwise be perceived as threatening to one’s sense of self by providing pre-emptive excuses for poor performances. Using data …
Research Exercise: Reading Interventions In Relation To The Ohio Third Grade Guarantee
Research Exercise: Reading Interventions In Relation To The Ohio Third Grade Guarantee
Stander Symposium Projects
Reading is one of the most critical skills that students learn in their first few years of education. A strong foundation in reading at the early childhood level can promote success in the rest of schooling and beyond. This is especially true for children of poverty; reading abilities and the strong education that follows provide students with opportunities to break the poverty cycle. The importance of reading achievement is a political dimension, as demonstrated by Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee. This legislation, which has many implications in education, requires that all third grade students who do not pass the Reading …
The Impact Of Exogenous Macro Economic Events On Flyer Fund Stock And Sector Returns
The Impact Of Exogenous Macro Economic Events On Flyer Fund Stock And Sector Returns
Stander Symposium Projects
A number of academic studies have shown that markets can be "shocked" by macro economic events. A sudden rise in inflation, interest rates, oil prices, just to name a few, can have a material effect on stock prices. In the study we use Bloomberg's Market Factor Model to determine the impact on stock and sector returns for the U.D. Flyer Fund. The Market Factor Model can identify response functions i.e. Betas between S&P 500 stocks and an exogenous variable like interest rates. We will study the impact of rising market volatility (VIX), rising interest rates (10 Yr T-Note) and oil …
Unfamiliar Territory: A Phenomological Study Of International Students Enrolled In A Large Urban Community College
Stander Symposium Projects
International students are choosing community colleges for reasons of affordability, easy access, and as a good place to start their education, especially if English is their second language. There is a deficiency of research surrounding this student population despite an increase in enrollment. With little representation of the ICCS in current literature and with institutions recognizing their value more than ever, an understanding of their experience is needed. This qualitative study sought to explore and understand the shared experience of the international college student enrolled in a large Midwestern urban community college. The method of data collection included personal interviews …

Application Of A Cobalt Porphyrin And Catalyst In Microbial Fuel Cells
Application Of A Cobalt Porphyrin And Catalyst In Microbial Fuel Cells
Stander Symposium Projects
A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a renewable energy device in which microorganisms consume organic matters to generate electricity. These devices have potential utility in wastewater treatment facilities to dually clean the water and generate part of the electricity needed for water treatment. The last decade has seen tremendous advancement in MFC technology, but many challenges remain, particularly with improving performance and efficiency of cathodes. The cathode reduces oxygen to water and traditionally has utilized precious metals as the primary catalytic compound. In these studies, the precious metal in the cathode has been replaced with alternative catalysts, cobalt porphyrins. Porphyrins …
