Manual: Measurement Of Evapotranspiration By The Bowen Ratio Energy Balance Method, Joon Kim, Shashi Verma

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Bowen ratio energy balance method has been widely used by many researchers to estimate the fluxes of water vapor and sensible heat between crops and atmosphere. The energy balance for the crop canopy can be expressed as Rn + G + H + LE + PS + M = 0 (1) where Rn is net radiation, G is soil surface heat flux, H is sensible heat flux and LE is latent heat flux.

Watershed Land Uses And Phosphorus Export Coefficient Relationships: A Planning Tool For Lake Resources Management, Carl R. Stapleton Jan 1985

Watershed Land Uses And Phosphorus Export Coefficient Relationships: A Planning Tool For Lake Resources Management, Carl R. Stapleton

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Relationships between nonpoint source pollutant loadings and water quality degradation in lakes have been established. However, practical methodologies necessary to identify and manage nonpoint sources in accordance with lake water quality indices have been lacking. Objectives of the current study were as follows: (1) to compare predicted model values for in-lake total phosphorus (TP) concentrations with actual values; and (2) to determine the applicability of areal phosphorus loading models for lake resources management. The research site was located 19 km west of the City of Little Rock in the Lake Maumelle basin. Areal total phosphorus (TP) loadings in g m^-2yr^-1 …

Improved Catchments For Farm Dams, I A F Laing Jan 1985

Improved Catchments For Farm Dams, I A F Laing

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The amounts and frequency of runoff from unimproved farmland catchments in Western Australia's cereal and sheep districts are notoriously variable and unreliable. As a result many farmers have constructed improved catchments to ensure better reliability of farm dams for livestock and homestead water supplies.

Improved catchments which are used extensively on these farms are all of the compacted or bare-earth type. These include roaded catchments, flat batter dams and, to a lesser extent, scraped catchments. This article mainly discusses roaded catchments, the most common of the improved catchment types on farms.

A Case Study In Maritime Boundary Delimitation: The Gulf Of Maine Dispute, Herbert D. Frerichs Jr. Jan 1985

A Case Study In Maritime Boundary Delimitation: The Gulf Of Maine Dispute, Herbert D. Frerichs Jr.

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The Gulf of Maine area, including Georges Bank, has long been regarded as an area of special interest and importance to United States' fishermen. The riches of Georges Bank were known to New England fishermen in the 18th century, and early in the 19th century, fishermen from Gloucester, Massachusetts developed the halibut fishery on the Bank. Through the 19th century and util the 1950's the Georges Bank fishery was exclusively the province of new England fishermen. However, in the 1960's large factory fleets from the Soviet Union and Japan began to invade the waters of Georges Bank. The wave of …

The Trinidad And Tobago/Venezuela Fishing Agreement, Zaleena K. Chin-Yuen-Kee Jan 1985

The Trinidad And Tobago/Venezuela Fishing Agreement, Zaleena K. Chin-Yuen-Kee

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is situated adjacent to the Republic Of Venezuela such that at one point Trinidad is merely seven miles off the northeast coast of Venezuela. Fishing activities of nationals of each country in the waters of the other are therefore common and often lead to conflict. In an attempt to solve the fishing problem a fishing agreement was negotiated. It came into force in 1978 and expired in 1984 whereupon negotiations commenced once more in an attempt to achieve new accord. The fishing industries of both countries and the conflicts which led to the …

Cooperatives: Their Effectiveness And Limitations For Small-Scale Fisheries Development, Hiroaki Yonesaka Jan 1985

Cooperatives: Their Effectiveness And Limitations For Small-Scale Fisheries Development, Hiroaki Yonesaka

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Increased experience in fisheries cooperatives of developing countries has called into question a long-held presumption about their desirability and feasibility. In this context, this study attempts to reformulate the cooperative approach for small-scale fisheries in a realistic policy framework. First, past failures of fisheries cooperatives are analyzed from three different angles: the uniqueness of the fishing industry, systems intrinsic to the cooperative, and development policy. Second, various possibilities of building viable cooperatives are explored by introducing two key concnpets: the strategic option and the operational option. On the one hand, the strategic option implies that it is imperative to integrate …

Evaluation Of The U. S. Army Corps Of Engineers' Decision-Making Process For Selection Of Dredged Material Disposal Sites, Brian P. Thompson

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This study evaluates the decision-making process of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) as it applies to the selection of land or open-water disposal sites for sediment from dredging projects planned by the COE. The study seeks to illustrate: 1) the structure of the COE decision-making process as provided for in laws, regulations, and COE policies; 2) the operational, economic, and environmental variables that might influence COE decision-making; 3) how the New England Division of the COE makes decisions on disposal sites for dredged material through consideration of operational, economic and environmental objectives. The study finds that the COE …

Fundy Tidal Power: A Need To Reassess The Environmental Framework Protecting The Transboundary Environment, Robert W. Rudolph Jan 1985

Fundy Tidal Power: A Need To Reassess The Environmental Framework Protecting The Transboundary Environment, Robert W. Rudolph

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The concept of harnessing the tides for energy is receiving renewed attention in the maritime provinces of Canada and northeastern United States where a scarcity of indigenous energy resources exists. While proposals for several small tidal power facilities are being considered in Maine, in Canada, Nova Scotia officials are moving ahead with plans for a major tidal power project (4,028 MW) in the Minas Basin in the Bay of Fundy. The vast majority of the power generated from this facility is expected to be exported to the New York and New England areas which have a greater energy demand that …

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1984 Annual Summary, James Whitcomb Jan 1985

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1984 Annual Summary, James Whitcomb

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made on oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells is counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur.

Ending Subsidized Degradation: The Ocean Dumping Example, Brenda Asher Dillman Dec 1984

Ending Subsidized Degradation: The Ocean Dumping Example, Brenda Asher Dillman

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

There is no way to measure, on a global scale, the pollution dumped directly into the oceans, let alone all the tens of thousands of particulates, toxics, and gaseous substances are added each day to the atmosphere surrounding the New York Bight. The aim of this paper is to develop a user fee framework for the ocean dumping of municipal sludge. Such a proposal requires a radical departure from the standards and enforcement approach of today's legislation. The ocean dumping of municipal sludge, while accounting for only a small percentage of the total waste dumped into the Bight, has proven …

Assessment Of Landsat For Rangeland Mapping, Rush Valley, Utah, United States, National Aeronautics And Space Administration Dec 1984

Assessment Of Landsat For Rangeland Mapping, Rush Valley, Utah, United States, National Aeronautics And Space Administration

Range Management

The objective of this investigation is to assess the feasibility of using Landsat MSS (multispectral scanner) data to identify and map cover types for rangeland, and to determine comparative condition of the ecotypes. A supporting objective is to assess the utility of various forms of aerial photography in the process.

If rangeland can be efficiently mapped with Landsat data, as supported by appropriate aerial photography and field data, then uniform standards of cover classification and condition may be applied across the rangelands of the state. Further, a foundation may be established for long-term monitoring of range trend, using the same …
