Effects Of Three Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi On Sweetgum Seedlings From Nine Mother Trees, Richard C. Schultz, Paul P. Kormanik, William C. Bryan Jun 1981

Effects Of Three Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi On Sweetgum Seedlings From Nine Mother Trees, Richard C. Schultz, Paul P. Kormanik, William C. Bryan

Richard C. Schultz

Soil in microplots was infested with three vesicular-arbuscular (VA) symbionts then sown with seed of half-sib progeny from nine sweetgum mother trees. The VA treatments were Glomus fasciculatus, Glomus spp. (a mixture containing both Glomus mosseae and Glomus etunicatus), or a VA mixture of several fungi from the genera Glomus and Gigaspora. Before the seed was sown, all plots had calcium standardized and received an application of commercial fertilizer. During the growing season, NH4NO3 was applied to all plots in equal portions. Mycorrhizal seedlings with G. fasciculatus were slightly but not significantly larger in both height and root-collar diameter than …

The Potential Of The Port Of New York In The Export/Domestic Coal Trade, Jane E. Mccallion May 1981

The Potential Of The Port Of New York In The Export/Domestic Coal Trade, Jane E. Mccallion

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This paper researches the potential of the Port of New York in the Export/Domestic coal trade markets. The Port is faced with short-term and long-term proposals in order to enter these markets. On a short-term basis, the Port will be able to offer an advantage to export markets because of the backlog at the traditional coal ports of Hampton Roads, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. A modest export trade can develop this way. In the domestic trade, substantial inroads can be made due to the conversion of power plants in New England to coal-fired. In the long-term, the Port is faced with the …

Forestry For Wildlife Habitat Improvement. Nebraska Cooperative Extension Service Ec 81-1747, Ec 80-1747, Frank A. Hershey, Howard L. Wiegers

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Wildlife cannot exist without food and protective cover. Natural and planted woodlands contribute significantly to these essentials. This circular describes habitat needs of wildlife, recommends forestry practices for habitat improvement, and gives examples of practices to improve habitat for pheasant, quail, and deer.

Variety, rather than uniformity of vegetation, benefits most wildlife species. Management which results in a diverse plant community with many stages of growth can increase the numbers and species of wildlife. Techniques which create improved conditions for woodland wildlife are fundamentally the same as those designed to grow good timber.

A Survey Of Water Flow In Drainage Ditches And Streams In South Central Minnesota, Clay L. Pierce, Bill Thompson

Clay L. Pierce

Discharge was monitored on 13 agricultural drainage ditches and 4 small rivers in south central Minnesota. Derived data were categorized by response to hydrologic events and stream order. Stream order was found to be the most reliable predictor of hydrologic event response. Peak flows in drainage ditches were found to correspond to peak flows in rivers.

U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers Public Interest Review: An Evaluation Of Implementation Effectiveness, Sharon Kelberg Jan 1981

U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers Public Interest Review: An Evaluation Of Implementation Effectiveness, Sharon Kelberg

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is authorized to permit or deny dredge and fill activities in the nation's coastal and wetland regions. Originally, responsible only for the maintenance of navigation, the Corps considered only navigational requirements in decisions to grant or deny permits. Now, however, the Corps must demonstrate, that the "public interest" is served as well. This study examines the scope of the public interest and attempts to evaluate the effectiveness of the program in a particularly controversial project. The initial phase provides evaluation criteria necessary to analyze the application of the public interest review. The second phase …

Beach Protection And Restoral Techniques And Their Application To The Rhode Island Coast, Dennis J. Stockwell Jan 1981

Beach Protection And Restoral Techniques And Their Application To The Rhode Island Coast, Dennis J. Stockwell

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

It is the purpose of this paper to investigate the techniques and designs for beach protection today, and to show that efforts are largely motivated by the economic value involved. The primary cause of beach erosion will be addressed through a discussion of coastal processes. The construction and purposes of the common engineering structures will be explored along with examples of the materials presently being used. The east-coast beaches of Florida with their traditional recreational lure will provide good examples of large-scale efforts to protect high-cost waterfront investments. Rhode Island shoreline varies considerably along its length and is also chiefly …

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1980 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall Jan 1981

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1980 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur. Shells planted just before the period of maximum set have the best chance of getting a good strike.

Vegetative Community Descriptions For The North Platte River In Wyoming And Nebraska, Lynn Fisher Nov 1980

Vegetative Community Descriptions For The North Platte River In Wyoming And Nebraska, Lynn Fisher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

A description of the vegetative communities in an area will provide an insight to wildlife potential and use of that area. Wildlife and its corresponding habitat are recognized as important for recreation and to the overall environmental quality of an area. The Water and Power Resources Service, Lower Missouri Region, is presently engaged in a study of the Platte River Basin, including an evaluation of wildlife habitat and associated environmental needs. Quantification of wildlife habitat along the South Platte River has been completed. Vegetation communities were described and habitat maps were prepared from color infrared aerial photographs (scale – 1:24,000). …
