Coastal Erosion Hazard Assessment Results Along Clallam County, Wa, Hannah Drummond Apr 2022

Coastal Erosion Hazard Assessment Results Along Clallam County, Wa, Hannah Drummond

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

The Washington State Department of Ecology performed an erosion hazard assessment for the coast of Clallam County, WA, from Cape Flattery to Diamond Point as part of a project for hazard mitigation planning funded by the Washington State Military Department Emergency Management Division. This shoreline receives among the highest wave energy for the Salish Sea and its rugged and remote coastline creates challenges for shoreline change assessments outside of developed areas. NAIP imagery from multiple years was compared to determine if an erosion risk was present based on vegetation line retreat. Oblique shoreline photos were used to help resolve imagery …

Experimental Olympia Oyster Restoration At Penrose Point State Park, Stena Troyer Apr 2022

Experimental Olympia Oyster Restoration At Penrose Point State Park, Stena Troyer

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

To better understand the potential for an Olympia oyster restoration at Penrose Point State Park, this project utilized experimental test plots established in September 2020, recruitment monitoring over the last three years, and long-term monitoring efforts since 2013. The project found that the test plots varied both in the stability of shell substrate and the survival of outplanted oyster seed. This survival of seed was lower than anticipated after 9 months and therefore, the monitoring efforts did not detect any differences between Penrose Point and the reference site at Maple Hollow Park. Additionally, larval settlement of Olympia oysters at Penrose …

2021 Particle Grain-Size And Total Organic Content Analyses Of Surface Sediments From Puget Sound And Elliot Bay Near Seattle, Wa, Jessica Wolford, Ethan Hoang, Julie Masura

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

Sediment characteristics are important to analyze to connect environmental conditions to sea floor sediments and characteristics of interest (i.e., benthic communities). Total organic carbon can represent oxygenated or reduced environments and/or biological vitality depending on water depth. Grain-size can represent high or low energy if sandy or silty, and the variability of grain-sizes (sorting) can indicate stormy conditions, landslides, or dumping. Washington State Department of Ecology’s Marine Sediment Monitoring Team has provided sediment samples to the University of Washington Tacoma for analysis since 2014, supporting undergraduate research efforts. This poster will present data on total organic carbon and particle grain-size …

A Five Year Look At The Impacts Of Ph Seasonally And Spatially Within Possession Sound, Maxwell Bauccio-Teschlog Apr 2022

A Five Year Look At The Impacts Of Ph Seasonally And Spatially Within Possession Sound, Maxwell Bauccio-Teschlog

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

The ability for an ecosystem’s organisms to adapt and thrive is dependent on the water chemistry. Capabilities for adaptation to the ever-changing environment are affected by the pH, or the acidity, of the water. Microorganisms, which are the foundation for a healthy ecosystem, are impacted by the pH of the water, and thus their ability to thrive depends on it. Globally, the pH of the ocean is decreasing as a result of ocean acidification caused by increasing anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Within the Salish Sea, which is home to an abundance of life, lies Possession Sound, located off the shores of …

West Whidbey Island Beach And Bluff Change Between 2015, 2018, And 2021 From Boat-Based Lidar, Amanda Hacking

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

The Washington State Department of Ecology Coastal Monitoring & Analysis Program (CMAP) collected high-resolution coastal topographic data along west Whidbey Island with boat-based lidar in 2015, 2018, and 2021. The high-density data acquired along the beach and bluff enabled detailed measurements of morphology and the generation of 0.5-meter digital elevation models (DEMs). The overlap between all three datasets, from Point Partridge north to West Beach County Park, is a 9-km reach dominated by feeder bluffs along the updrift end of a 23-km drift cell with relatively high wave exposure. The DEMs are compared along this updrift reach to reveal patterns …

Hatchery Release Strategy Effects On Production Outcomes For Chinook And Coho, Sam James Apr 2022

Hatchery Release Strategy Effects On Production Outcomes For Chinook And Coho, Sam James

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

Salmon hatcheries face the challenging task of developing release strategies that attempt to maximize survival and minimize risk to wild populations. Release strategies refer to the size at release, timing of release, nature of release (i.e. forced or volitional), number of releases, release location, and the use of acclimation facilities prior to release. We led an extensive review of hatchery release strategies and how they can be used as a management tool to influence production outcomes (i.e. survival, catch, and return ages). The review consisted of three components: 1) a systematic review of the literature from BC and the western …

Utilizing New Pit Tag Technology To Assess Juvenile Chinook Migration Patterns, Residence Time, And Survival In The Lower Green River., Chris Gregersen

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

The highly altered lower Green river subbasin has been the focus of intense salmon habitat planning and restoration efforts since the listing of Puget Sound Chinook in 1999. Monitoring juvenile chinook migration and life history dynamics has been critical for tailoring habitat restoration in the Green River. In the lower Green subbasin, however, juvenile salmon population monitoring using screw traps has proven to be difficult due to low gradient and water velocities. Meanwhile, traditional monitoring methods (e.g., electrofishing and seining) cannot accurately quantify residence time or survival rates. Given the large financial investments of habitat restoration in the lower Green, …

Assessing Futures Of Two Cowichan River Pacific Salmon Species, Chinook And Coho, Using Scenario Analysis For Cumulative Effects Assessment, Dr. Arman Ospan, Johannes J. Feddema, Andrea Locke

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

We assessed futures of the Cowichan River’s anadromous Chinook and Coho salmon populations using a proposed methodology for Cumulative Effects Assessment. First, we examined linkages between salmon survival and effect drivers; we built quantitative models to predict changes in salmon survival in response to changes in effect drivers; created scenarios of divergent futures for each effect driver; and, by applying the models, projected salmon survival for each scenario. We conducted assessment for both early freshwater and marine environments. In fresh water, we focused on two main factors: streamflow and stream temperature, and two main drivers: land use and climate change. …

Modeling The Effects Of Climate Change On Peak Flows In The Nooksack River, North Cascades, Wa, Evan Paul Apr 2022

Modeling The Effects Of Climate Change On Peak Flows In The Nooksack River, North Cascades, Wa, Evan Paul

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

The Nooksack River in northwest Washington State provides freshwater for agriculture and industrial use and serves as a vital habitat for endangered salmon, a resource that is of cultural and economic importance to the Nooksack Indian Tribe. Historically, peak streamflows in the 2300 sq-km Nooksack basin are driven by rainfall in the fall and early winter. Global climate models (GCMs) project an increase in air temperatures for the Salish Sea region, and previous modeling within the Nooksack basin projects a reduction in snowpack extent through the 21st century and an increase in winter streamflow magnitude. As more landscape becomes exposed …

The adaptive co-management of a complex, socio-ecological system such as floodplains often requires a strategic and coordinated approach for achieving climate resilience. At the same time, the collaborative nature of Integrated Floodplain Management often involves a broad range of actors with varying perspectives on adaptation who must work within their own organizational mandates, regulatory domains and decision-making frameworks. Through an assessment of existing literature, this work draws on best practices to develop Introductory Guidance for effective climate adaptation in Integrated Floodplain Management. The goal of this guidance document is to provide floodplain practitioners in Pierce, Snohomish, and Whatcom counties with …

Improving Salmon Access To Inland Habitat Can Also Reduce Risk To Human Safety And Property, Ken Cousins Apr 2022

Improving Salmon Access To Inland Habitat Can Also Reduce Risk To Human Safety And Property, Ken Cousins

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

Salmon are not only keystone species, but are also culturally and economically critical, supporting large tribal, commercial, and recreational fishing industries. Transportation infrastructure can significantly impact salmon, especially where road crossings impede their free movement. Modifying stream crossing infrastructure to restore salmon access to inland habitat is a major (albeit expensive) priority throughout the region. Progress in this area will require broadening stakeholder support and financing options. We must expand our understanding of the value of improving stream crossings to include not only ecological costs, but also conventional risks (e.g., localized flooding, transportation disruptions) arising from disrupted stream flows. Earth …

Modeling The Effects Of Projected Climate Warming On Stream Temperatures In The Stillaguamish River Basin, Emily Smoot Apr 2022

Modeling The Effects Of Projected Climate Warming On Stream Temperatures In The Stillaguamish River Basin, Emily Smoot

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

The Stillaguamish River watershed is a snow-and-rain mixed basin in northwestern Washington, with snowmelt being important for sustaining spring and summer streamflow and buffering stream-temperatures. Elevations in the 1700 sq-km Stillaguamish basin reach roughly 2000 m that sustain a historical snowpack above about 1000 m. Previous basin-specific modeling projected that snowpack will retreat to higher elevations and summer stream temperatures will increase, reaching both embryo lethality (16 °C) and adult lethality (22 °C) by 2075 in the North and South Forks in the Stillaguamish River. Stream temperature increases are of significant concern because of the threatened Chinook salmon population, which …

Occurrence And Fate Of 6ppd-Quinone In Urban Receiving Waters, Dr. Edward Kolodziej Apr 2022

Occurrence And Fate Of 6ppd-Quinone In Urban Receiving Waters, Dr. Edward Kolodziej

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

In the U.S. Pacific Northwest, coho salmon, (Oncorhynchus kisutch), annually exhibit acute mortality upon stormwater exposure when adult salmon migrate to urban and near urban creeks to reproduce. We recently linked these mortality events to “6PPD-quinone”, a highly toxic transformation product of a common industrial antioxidant chemical 6PPD that is ubiquitously used in vehicle tires. These results reveal unanticipated risks of tire rubber antioxidants to an important aquatic species and imply toxicological relevance for widely dissipated tire rubber residues. Management of roadway runoff in general, and 6PPD/6PPD-quinone specifically, will be a clear priority for maintenance of ecosystem health and function, …
