Crop performance and climatic records were collated for high production counties in South Dakota to evaluate the effects of temperature and precipitation on yields. The crops involved were corn, soybeans, sorghum, oats, spring wheat, and winter wheat. Records were compared for the period from 1965 to 1982. The computer data file for each county includes seven climatic parameters, dates of plant development, adjusted yield-and yield rank by year. The crop/climate record for the 17-year period was evaluated in sixteen counties per crop each year. Thus, 272 county x year observations were made for each crop, except for soybeans which involved …

A new species of sand-burrowing amphipod, Acanthohaustorius pansus, is described from carbonate sands of the Florida Keys Reef Tract. This is the first time the predominantly cold-water genus Acanthohaustorius has been reported south of Virginia coastal waters. Acanthohaustorius bousfieldi Frame, 1980, originally described from Long Island Sound, is refigured and reported from shell-hash sediments off the central Atlantic coast of Florida. A revised key to the species of Acanthohaustorius is presented.

A new species, Siphonoecetes arabicus, is described from the Arabian Gulf, and a new species B. wongi is described in the new genus Borneoecetes from Borneo. The former species does not fit recently described subgenera, thus indicating a necessary reassessment of those taxa.

The High Plains aquifer, which underlies about 174,000 square miles in parts of eight States, is the principal source of water in one of the Nation's major agricultural areas. About 170,000 wells pump water from the aquifer to irrigate about 13 million acres in the High Plains. In 1978, the U.S. Geological Survey began a regional study of the High Plains aquifer to provide geohydrologic data and computer models of the aquifer needed to evaluate the effects of ground-water development. Landsat images are analyzed to investigate the causes of turbidity variations in lower Chesapeake Bay surface water. Visual analysis and image enhancement are used in association with optical film density data obtained along selected Bay transects. The optical density data of all images, inversely related to surface turbidity, are used to produce residual turbidity profiles showing turbidity above and below average conditions. meteorological conditions have Images with similar tidal or their residual optical density data averaged to identify probable causes of above average turbidity levels. Anatomical Observations On The Ampullae Of Lorenzini From Selected Skates And Galeoid Sharks Of The Western North, William Raschi

The gross structure of the ampullae of Lorenzini and its distribution on the body of 40 species of skates (Rajoidei) and 5 species of sharks (Galeomorphii) were compared in an attempt to investigate correlations within this system to feeding mechanisms. Three general lines of morphological change are observed. A larger proportion of the ampullary pores are associated with the ventral surface of the dorsoventrally flattened skates than the more conically shaped sharks. The relative proportion of ventral pores is significantly reduced on those species inhabiting aphotic waters. Secondly, the more piscivorous rajoids possess an array of ventral pores which covers …

This study was undertaken to investigate the problems and procedures encountered in the development of fishery harbors in Connecticut. Harbor facilities along the coast are in great disrepair or have been completely eliminated to allow for more profitable coastal uses. In addition, conflict between recreational and commercial fishermen for existing space has created a shortage of commercial harbor facilities. Because of this need, state and local officials have begun to investigate viable harbor development alternatives for Connecticut.

High-level radioactive waste produced by nuclear power generation, weapons production, and medical research has been accumulating in temporary storage pools in many countries. A permanent method of disposal will soon benecessary to ensure against contamination of man and the environment. Land-based geologic formations, such as salt domes, are the preferred sites for disposal at this time in the United States. Subseabed emplacement is one option under consideration and the technological aspects of this method are currently being studied. A comparative study of the regulatory frameworks surrounding aquaculture in the states of Florida, Mississippi, and Rhode Island is conducted beginning with a generalized study of basic legal premises of aquaculture-related law common to each state. This is followed by a detailed study of the statutory authority for aquaculture regulation and the agencies which control aquaculture activities in each state. In conjunction with the law analysis an Index of Specialization (ISP) study is conducted for each state to determine a relative ranking of diversity of crop production relative to each state’s overall aquaculture production.

The Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, is charged with (1) maintaining a hydrologic network in Nevada that provides information on the status of the State's water resources and (2) engaging in technical water-resources investigations that have a high degree of transferability. Razorback suckers (Xyrauchen texanus) and bonytail chubs (Gila elegans) were once widespread throughout the Colorado River system. The ranges and populations of these native species and others have declined in the past 50 years. Bonytail chubs appear to be extremely rare and possibly nearing extinction in the Upper Colorado River Basin. The razorback sucker is widely distributed in the upper river but is considered rare throughout most of that range and is also rare in the Grand Canyon. Razorback suckers are abundant only in a few habitats in the upper river. They congregate and spawn over …
