A mathematical model by Green, simulating one-dimensional vertical ground-water movement in unsaturated soils of the prairie region of Kansas, has been adapted for use in a wetlands environment typified by the wetlands forest of Eastern Arkansas. The model consists of two second-order, non-linear, partial differential equations and an algorithm for their numerical solution. The original model was extended to include functions for seasonal changes in transpiration and for drainage of excess precipitation. Before the addition of the two functions, the model reliability was limited to one growth season.

An instrumentation and recording package and several transducers were constructed and used to collect data on the environmental parameters thought to affect wetland vegetation growth and reproduction. These parameters were temperature, humidity, wind velocity, depth of water table, and amount of surface water. The data were collected four times a day and recorded on a magnetic cassette tape that could record for as long as 90 days. The tapes were read and the data were converted to engineering units by a microcomputer-based instrument constructed for that purpose.

A technique has been developed to infer the optical thickness of Saharan dust from Synchronous Meteorological Satellite (SMS) brightness measurements at visible wavelengths. The scattering model consists of an air layer, a dust layer and a lower boundary of variable albedo. Single-scatter properties of the dust computed from Mie theory were the basis for calculations by plane-parallel theory of radiative transfer in the dust layer. Radiative interactions between air and dust layers and the lower boundary were calculated with an adding version of the doubling scheme. Optical thickness was determined from satellite brightness measurements through a lookup table produced by …

Density currents are commonly formed in reservoirs because of temperature or salinity induced density differences between inflowing and receiving waters. Anderson and Pritchard (1951) were among the first to demonstrate this in their investigations of density currents in Lake Mead. They found that the Colorado River formed an underflow in Lake Mead during the winter, an overflow in the spring and an interflow in the summer and fall. Wunderlich and Elder (1973) have since described the hydromechanics of these types of flow patterns, and density currents have been reported for several other large reservoirs (Carmack et al. 1979, Johnson and …

Interactions among physical, chemical and biological processes in reservoirs can significantly alter the characteristics of the discharge (Neel 1963, Wright 1967, Hannan 1979) that, in turn, can influence the ecology of the river downstream .(Ward and Stanford 1979). Investigations of the Colorado River, system reveal that reservoir-induced changes in the river can also affect downstream reservoirs. The formation of Lake Powell, in 1963 was accompanied by reductions in suspended sediment and nutrient loading and changes in the seasonal temperature and discharge cycles of the Colorado River. The accident at the Three Mile Island (TMI), Pennsylvania nuclear powered electrical generating plant on March 28, 1979 has promoted a great deal of concern and interest in the future of nuclear power in the United States. Such concern is manifested by the unofficial moratorium imposed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on the granting of new permits for the construction and operation of nuclear plants until the problems presented by the accident at TMI have been addressed. In 1973, the New England Fishery Development Program (NEFDP), an industry/government partnership was formed to offset a portion of the economic decline of the New England fishing industry while encouraging the development of underutilized species and nontraditional fishery products. The purpose of this paper is to examine one of the NEFDP's development projects and to comment on its apparent success. This paper attempts to determine if domestic processors can be expected to produce whiting fillet blocks that can compete in the market place with foreign imports. The purpose of this paper is to examine the feasibility of using helicopters to move high value fish from the offshore fishing fleet at sea, to market distribution locations. To accomplish this purpose, data was collected on the high value swordfish species, ex-vessel, $1.50 per pound, and used to compare three basic options. Two Sikorsky helicopters were considered in the options tested; the light lift S58T, and the medium lift S61. The data shows the S58T to dominate the S61 in all comparisons. When, in 1973, preliminary seismic studies were made in Puerto Rico, in order to site a nuclear plant, possible hydrocarbon deposits were delineated. This gave rise to the controversy of Puerto Rico's right to its offshore resources. How far out does Puerto Rico's right extend? Puerto Rico's right to a territorial sea and an exclusive economic zone should be defined by international law standards. The controversy, in the context of Puerto Rico's status question, is what this paper is about.

On March 23, 1975 oil leaked out of an oil retention pit at a drilling site owned by L.O. Ward. Ward was an Oklahoma wildcatter and the owner and operator of L.O. Ward Oil and Gas Operations. The spilled oil ran down a gully and into Boggie Creek. Boggie Creek is a tributary of the navigable Arkansas River. The discharge of oil from Ward's property therefore amounted to the discharge of a harmful quantity of oil within the meaning of Section 1321 (b)(3) of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act and also a harmful quantity within the meaning of regulations …

Dispersion of 3HOH was studied at flow velocities less than 14 cm/day in a Captina silt loam using the half-cell technique. Two directions of transport were studied: movement of 3HOH in the same direction as water, and movement of 3HOH in the opposite direction to that of water. Results indicated that the dispersion coefficients were velocity dependent for equilibration times ranging to 21 hours. As the average pore flow velocity increased, the length of time needed for the dispersion coefficients to become independent of the flow velocity increased. Laboratory grazing and assimilation experiments were conducted on the mysid shrimp Neomysis americana in an attempt to assess the suitability of three potential food sources. It was hypothesized that the smaller size classes were primarily herbivores, not becoming omnivorous until attaining lengths of approximately 5-6 mm. Four size classes of mysids from the summer generation, juveniles, immature, adult males, and adult ovigerous females were each fed three concentrations of Artemia salina nauplii, the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis, and the diatom Coscinodiscus lineatus. Spatial zonation of symbiotic and aposymbiotic forms of the temperate coral Astrangia danae provides evidence that light attenuation is an important factor in the distribution of this animal. At four locations in the lower Chesapeake Bay and adjacent offshore waters, symbiotic colonies were observed only in well illuminated surface waters, while aposymbiotic colonies were observed in less illuminated deeper waters. A transition zone exists in which both colony types are found. Colonies on substrates forming a plane parallel to the sea-surface receive a greater radiant flux than colonies on vertical substrates. Macrobenthic invertebrates of an industrialized seaport ecosystem were studied seasonally from October, 1977 through July, 1978. Five stations were selected along the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, Virginia. The stations ranged from an area of heavy industrialization to a non-urbanized environment. At each station, bottom water was measured for salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH. Within each sampling area, macrobenthic infauna! invertebrates were collected from in and out of channel sites along with sediment samples for various types of physicochemical analysis.

A Lagrangian method utilizing clusters of four or five buoyed drogues is used to study the surface circulation and horizontal diffusion processes of the lower Chesapeake Bay. The study area encompasses some 160 km2 and includes the area north of Thimble Shoal Channel, southwest of Chesapeake Channel and west of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. Eleven trials utilizing buoyed drogues were conducted in the time frame February to October, 1979. Four trials were interrupted when buoys entered neighboring channels or dispersed too far for tracking, so that a total of sixteen runs were completed on the eleven trial …

In June 1976 the parasitic faunas of sergeant majors, Abudefduf saxatilis, from a coral reef habitat near Akumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico and from an estuarine habitat in the adjacent caleta at Yalku were compared. The frequencies of occurrence of the nematode Spirocamallanus, the hemiurid trematode Genolinea the haplosplanchnid trematode Schikhobalotrema, and the copepod Holobomolochus nothrus, were dependent on collection locality. The residency of the damselfish in habitats with radically different salinity regimes, as well as the associated biotic communities within these habitats, are suspected causes of the observed differences.

There are several planned alternatives for increasing the generation capacity of Hoover Dam to help meet peak power demands. These alternatives include: (a) uprating the existing generating units, (b) replacing or adding one or more generating units and (c) adding reversible pumped-storage hydroelectric units. Since the existing generators are at the end of their economic life and have to be replaced, their uprating has been scheduled as routine maintenance. This will increase the generating capacity of the Hoover Dam powerplant from 1240 MW to 1810 MW, but the anticipated capacity for meeting power demand is 2300 MW. The U.S. Water and Power Resources Service is considering reregulating Lake Mohave water levels to increase the net power benefit from Hoover Dam. Reregulation will not increase the generation capacity of the Hoover powerplant but it will enable the plant operation to be increased when the energy has greater monetary value. Energy generated at different times of the year has different market value, the highest being in January-March and July- September. This report is based on the chemical analysis of the waters from 93 springs and 9 wells. Springs, when free from metal plumbing, provide an uncontaminated source of the ground water and it was desired to obtain water uncontaminated with metals.
