With national interest focused on man’s ever increasing degradation of the waters in this nation, it is clearly evident that an accurate assessment of all parameters influencing water quality needs to be made. Moreover, nutrient levels and budgets reflecting eutrophication trends are important parameters in the overall factors effecting water quality in lakes and reservoirs. The ability to predict future eutrophication levels will greatly enhance the retardation of the eutrophication process. Through mathematical simulation of this process, eutrophication can be analyzed and intelligent decisions regarding water quality management can be made.

This report describes studies made of the temperature characteristics of dissolved oxygen electrodes having a large surface area. Large area electrodes proved to have much longer lifetime between rejuvenations. Many measurements of dissolved oxygen in water need to be made in field situations where recalibration techniques would be difficult and where making temperature corrections is time consuming for operators who may be making numerous measurements. This study was directed toward design of a compensation circuit for a dissolved oxygen electrode which will give the best possible measurement over a large water temperature range of 5° - 35°C without the necessity …

Massive metallic-sulfide deposits were implaced in the Leadville Limestone {Mississippian) of Central Colorado less than 70 million years ago. The thermal fluids which precipitated ore at Gilman, Colorado have regionally altered the Leadville Limestone. The sequence of alteration began with the recrystallization of limestone to a dark medium~grained dolomite containing a homogeneous distribution of Fe. This Was followed by partial recrystallization of the medium-grained dolomite to coarse-clear dolomite which contains an inhomogeneous distribution of Fe. The resulting banded rock is known as "zebra rock" . Precipitation of Si0 2 (jasperoid) occurred next. The jaspe=oid formed prior to the deposition of …

The following discussion focuses on the current situation as regards U.S. oil interests worldwide offshore. It divides into three general areas: 1) a general view of the scope of the U.S. oil companies' investments offshore, foreign and domestic, 2) an analysis of the recent rise to power of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the ensuing problems created for U.S. oil investments abroad, and 3) a brief history and a discussion of U.S. oil interests in the law of the sea as an expression of their concern for resolution to OPEC-like problems.

Of the four time of planting trials twodefinitely showed superiority of earlier seeding (73BA5, 73E6). The two trials in the Southwest (73BR14 and 73MT7) gave highest yields with June sowing compared to May. Three trials (73BR14, 73E6 and 73BA5) appear to have a Variety x Time interaction for plant density, but no definite trend for either Uniharvest or Unicrop although later sowing reduced plant density. Seeding rates in excess of 82 kg/ha gave the highest yields in all trials. The rate of seeding experiments (73BA5 and 73MT7) show that the best crop density for yield (graph) lies between 8 and …

This program was a status study of the interaction between Las Vegas Wash, an enriched stream, and Las Vegas Bay, a wedge shaped arm of one of the world's deeper reservoirs. The program centered primarily on identification and counting of planktonic algae from several points in Las Vegas Bay. Additional work on nutrient enrichment of water samples was conducted to aid in interpretation of algal distribution related to nutrient input. Streamflow data from unregulated streams in Arkansas were processed through Moran’s Model for a dam. The process involved calculating a cumulative gamma distribution for each stream as the streamflow values were incremented in units of 0.1 cubic feet per second per square mile of drainage area. This gamma distribution was then used as input for Moran’s Model. The output from Moran's Model includes the probability of the reservoir having zero contents as the size of the reservoir is decreased. A theoretical and experimental study of the microwave reflectivity of soils with varying moisture content was conducted. A system was developed to measure reflectivity over a continuous frequency range of 4 to 26.5 GHz, at incidence angles from 10° to 70°, and with both horizontal and vertical polarization. The measurements were found to be extremely accurate for smooth homogeneous surfaces, however, the effects of surface roughness were found to be more severe than predicted due to the discontinuous nature of naturally occurring rough surfaces. Foraminiferal faunas in marshes and distributary channels of the James River estuary, Virginia, disclose several facies. The channel facies, primarily Ammobaculites crassus, and A. sp. A, typical of estuaries in Chesapeake Bay and other brackish areas are readily distinguishable freom the march facies. Marshes are divisible laterally by changes in the relative proportions of marsh species such as Miliammina fusca, Ammoastuta salsa, and Haplophragmoides hancocki.Changes along the longitudinal estuarine salinity gradient are discernable in both tidal creeks and marsh. Effect Of Air Bubble Solution On Air-Sea Gas Exchange, Larry P. Atkinson

Recent data on ambient wave generated oceanic bubble spectra (Medwin, 1970) permit the calculation of the influence of bubble solution on air-sea gas exchange. Schulkin's formula is used to estimate the depth variation of bubbles, and a square law is used to estimate the increase of bubble volume with wind speed. Calculations indicate that bubble solution can be a very significant factor in gas exchange. Bubble solution enhances gas input and retards degassing of the water column. Preliminary data show a lag time of about 5 hours in the response of the water column to an atmospheric pressure change.

A 3n factorial design to evaluate the effects of an abrupt introduction of striped bass, Morone saxatilis from a closed-system rearing facility into a variety of experimental temperature and salinity combinations has demonstrated a considerable hardiness of juvenile fish. Striped bass less than two months old had over 80.0%, survival during seven days subsequent to acute introduction from an average ambient condition of 21.0 ± 3 C at 0.20 to 4.8% into temperatures of 18 C and 24 C and salinities of 4.0% and 12.0%. The commercial seabass notting fishery and the trawl fishery in the Blackfish Bank area east of the entrance to Chincoteague Bay were used to study the biology of the rock crab, Cancer irroratus Say. Highest relative abundance of rock crabs occured in February, March, and April when coldest inshore (<30m) bottom water temperatures occurred. Relative abundance during all other months was extremely low. The apparent seasonal change in relative abundance may be due to an inshore-offshore seasonal migration of mature crabs following the seasonal inshore-offshore shift of colder bottom water. Male rock crabs grow to a significantly larger size than females. The carapace width range of males captured in the potting fishery was 66 to 141 mm; and 25 to 106 mm for females. In the trawl fishery the width range for males was 20 to 137 mm; and 22 to 102 mm for females. In both pot and trawl catches the male to female ratio was biased in favor of males. Males comprised 92% of the pot catch and 84% of all crabs captured by trawl. From August through December all crabs were in the hard shell intermolt stage. Small percentages of soft crabs occurred from January through June. Papershell crabs predominated in February, March and April. It is probable that most crabs molted in January and the process of exoskeleton hardening took several months. Ovigerous females were captured in seabass pots in April and June and in trawls from February through April. All ovigerous crabs were in hard shell condition. Gondal inspection of males and the presence of eggs on females indicated that rock crabs mature at a relatively small size (30 mm carapace width). Female rock crabs have a deeper body and wider abdomen than equivalent width males. Abdomen width grows more rapidly for females after the onset of sexual maturity than before. Mature females have a longer carapace than equivalent width males. Male and female regressions of chela length on carapace width could not be compared statistically but plots of the equations suggest no sexual difference. A mathematical model of the Quaternary Aquifer of the Grand Prairie, Arkansas was developed and used to evaluate a variety of methods of artificially recharging this aquifer. In addition, the model was used to evaluate the impact of various levels of water management and the probable movement of artificially recharged water in the aquifer. Improved water management and the use of recharge wells were the two alternatives that showed the most promise as potential solutions. The rate of movement of recharged water was determined by the model to be 300 ft./year under a gradient of 16 ft./mile.

This thesis attempts to determine the effect of air bubbles that are entrapped into the surface layers of the ocean by breaking waves on gas concentrations in the ocean and gas exchange across the air-sea interface. N2 and Ar data gathered during the Hudson-70 expedition produced indications of the magnitude and nature of the effect. A mathematical model is developed that equates the input of gas via bubble solution with the vertical eddy diffusion. Published values for bubble spectra and solution rates are used and assumptions are made concerning the effect of wind on bubble spectra. The model predicts …
