A Synoptic Air Mass Climatology Of The Eastern United States, Robert I. Wittick Jul 1966

A Synoptic Air Mass Climatology Of The Eastern United States, Robert I. Wittick

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

Orientation and Objective

The concept of the air mass was developed by a group of Norwegian meteorologists during World War I. An air mass, they said, was a body of air which was horizontally homogeneous with respect to temperature and humidity. These bodies of air were classified according to their place of origin since the basic character of an air mass is similar to that of its source region.

Since 1932 when the first air mass climatology was written by Dinies1, the meteorological and geographical journals have published many studies of air mass movements and …

Tb22: Design, Construction And Calibration Of A Laboratory Rainfall Simulator, Eliot Epstein, Walter J. Grant Apr 1966

Tb22: Design, Construction And Calibration Of A Laboratory Rainfall Simulator, Eliot Epstein, Walter J. Grant

Technical Bulletins

The use of field plots under natural rainfall conditions to evaluate factors that cause or contribute to erosion requires a long period of study to cover a range of climatic variations. To shorten the time required for erosion studies, field plot and laboratory rainfall simulators have been developed. The rainfall simulator at the University of Maine was designed for the study of soil characteristics as related to soil erodibility, and for the determination of soil erodibility factor (K) as used in the universal soil loss prediction equation.

A comprehensive study of the physical and biological characteristics of the James Estuary has been carried out by oceanographers of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science under contract with the Virginia Commission of Fisheries. This research project, under way for three years, has been directed especially to the effects of the proposed James River Navigation Project channel dredging on physical features--i·~.,the structure and dynamics, of the estuary, and indirectly on oyster production. Five separate phases were carried out under the project (called Operation James River). These involved: 1) accumulation and study of relevant literature and data, 2) research into the …

The Occurrence And Distribution Of Methane In The Marine Environment, Larry Philip Atkinson Jan 1966

The Occurrence And Distribution Of Methane In The Marine Environment, Larry Philip Atkinson

OES Faculty Publications

The distribution of methane in several anoxic marine environments is described. Maximum concentrations observed were μ mole CH4-C/liter. The distribution of methane seems to follow that of sulfide. The data indicate that methane is derived from organic compounds not containing nitrogen or phosphorus and that its formation is much slower than that of sulfide.

Predictor Equations For Beach Processes And Responses, W. Harrison, N. A. Pore, D. R. Tuck Jr.

VIMS Articles

A stepwise (linear) multiple regression procedure is applied to 11 environmental variables (or predictors) in the beach-ocean-atmosphersey stema t Virginia Beach, Virginia, for the following five predictands: mean longshore current velocity, mean bottom slope in the shoaling-wave zone, average mean grain size in the shoaling-wave zone, and beach deposition and beach erosion on the lower foreshore. Predictors consist of variables related to beach geometry, local water properties, local wind conditions, tidal fluctuations, and wave characteristics The resultant equations are tested against a set of independent data and, with one exception, agree reasonably. It is believed that if the data set …

The Annual Distribution And Stratification Of Phytoplankton At Aurora Lake, Portage County, Ohio, Harold G. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A 13-month study of a hard-water lake in northeast Ohio has provided a quantitative and qualitative record of the seasonal changes of the phytoplankton. Maximum production occurred during the summer and winter periods. The summer pulse was dominated by the cyanophyte species: Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena spiroides, A. circinalis, and Aphanizomenon flosaquae. The dominants of the winter pulse were the diatoms Fragilaria crotomensis and Asterionella formosa, which formed separate peaks under an ice cover in December and January, respectively. The January development extended into March with the highest concentrations for the year Being reached at approximately …

The Distribution Of Phytoplankton Along A 140 Mile Transect In The Chesapeake Bay, Harold G. Marshall Jan 1965

The Distribution Of Phytoplankton Along A 140 Mile Transect In The Chesapeake Bay, Harold G. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The composition of phytoplankton progressively changed in the surface samples taken between Norfolk, Virginia and Cambridge, Maryland. These was an inverse relationship between the numbers of phytoplankters and zooplankters in the transect samples. Vertical stratification of the plankton was studied at two 24-hr, stations at the Great Wicomlco and Patuxent Rivers. The vertical centers of zooplankton and phytoplankton populations fluctuated over the study period and evidence is given to support a grazing phenomenon. Large concentrations of nannoplankters were found in all the plankton samples taken and is attributed to the collection procedure using the Van Dorn sampler.

Some Consequences Of The Decomposition Of Organic Matter In Lake Nitinat, An Anoxic Fjord, Francis A. Richards, Joel D. Cline, William W. Broenkow, Larry P. Atkinson Jan 1965

Some Consequences Of The Decomposition Of Organic Matter In Lake Nitinat, An Anoxic Fjord, Francis A. Richards, Joel D. Cline, William W. Broenkow, Larry P. Atkinson

CCPO Publications

Observations in Lake Nitinat, an anoxic fjord on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, indicate that the large accumulations of ammonia, carbonates, phosphates, silicates, and sulfides in the deep water are the result of oxidative and fermentative decomposition of organic matter of planktonic origin, the reduction of sulfate ions, hydrolytic or other non-oxidative release (in the case of silicates), and the solution of carbonates (which also increases the alkalinity). Ammonia, sulfides, and silicates accumulate in the sulfide zone in direct proportion to each other, but some of the phosphate is probably released from the organic matter earlier than the other components, and …

Drift Bottle Studies At Bodega Head, California, Robert Jay Hamby Jan 1965

Drift Bottle Studies At Bodega Head, California, Robert Jay Hamby

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Despite the fact that considerable information now exists on the major oceanic current system, off the Pacific Coast, little is known about the near shore currents in many regions of the west coast states. The Bodega Bay area of California is a case in point. Because of the proposed construction of a nuclear-powered steam plant on Bodega Head and its proximity to both the Pacific Marine Station of the University of the Pacific and to the future marine laboratory of the University of California, it has become necessary to learn as much as possible about the currents in the immediate …
