A New Compensating Element For A Femtosecond Photoelectron Gun, Bao-Liang Qian, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali
A New Compensating Element For A Femtosecond Photoelectron Gun, Bao-Liang Qian, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Design and analysis of a new compensating element for improving the electron pulse front and compressing the pulse duration in a femtosecond photoelectron gun are described. The compensating element is a small metallic cylindrical cavity in which an external voltage is applied in such a way that a special electric field forms and interacts with the electron pulse. This electric field reduces the distances between the faster and slower electrons inside the cavity and efficiently compensates for electron pulse broadening caused by the photoelectron energy spread and space charge effects. Poisson's equation and the equation of motion are solved to …

Time-Resolved Structural Study Of Low-Index Surfaces Of Germanium Near Its Bulk Melting Temperature, Xinglin Zeng, H. E. Elsayed-Ali
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The structure of the low-index surfaces of germanium near its bulk melting temperature is investigated using 100-ps time-resolved reflection high-energy electron diffraction. The surface is heated by 100-ps laser pulses while a synchronized electron beam probes the structure. Ge(111)was observed to remain in its incomplete melting structure up to at least Tm + 134 ± 40 K when heated by a 100-ps laser pulse. Both the Ge(100) and Ge(110) surfaces are observed to melt near the bulk melting temperature when heated with 100-ps laser pulses. Because of the low-diffraction intensity-to-background ratio at high temperatures and because of the temperature …

Entropy Generation Method To Quantify Thermal Comfort, S. C. Boregowda, S. N. Tiwari, S. K. Chaturvedi
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
The present paper presents a thermodynamic approach to assess the quality of human-thermal environment interaction and quantify thermal comfort. The approach involves development of entropy generation term by applying second law of thermodynamics to the combined human-environment system. The entropy generation term combines both human thermal physiological responses and thermal environmental variables to provide an objective measure of thermal comfort. The original concepts and definitions form the basis for establishing the mathematical relationship between thermal comfort and entropy generation term. As a result of logic and deterministic approach, an Objective Thermal Comfort Index (OTCI) is defined and established as a …
Eddy Structures Induced Within A Wedge By A Honing Circular Arc, C. P. Hills
Eddy Structures Induced Within A Wedge By A Honing Circular Arc, C. P. Hills
Articles
In this paper we outline an expeditious numerical procedure to calculate the Stokes flow in a corner due to the rotation of a scraping circular boundary. The method is also applicable to other wedge geometries. We employ a collocation technique utilising a basis of eddy (similarity) functions introduced by Moffatt (1964) that allows us to satisfy automatically the governing equations for the streamfunction and all the boundary conditions on the surface of the wedge. The circular honing problem thereby becomes one-dimensional requiring only the satisfaction of conditions on the circular boundary. The advantage of using the Moffatt eddy functions as …
Topics In Physics Beyond The Standard Model, Alfredo Aranda
Topics In Physics Beyond The Standard Model, Alfredo Aranda
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In this dissertation we address three issues related to physics beyond the Standard model: flavor and the use of discrete gauge symmetries, the dynamical breaking of electroweak symmetry, and the addition of a U(1) gauge symmetry to the Standard model in order to suppress proton decay. We present: (i) A model of flavor based on the double tetrahedral group that leads to acceptable quark and lepton masses as well as mixing angles. Furthermore it gives solutions for the atmospheric and solar neutrino problems. (ii) A model of bosonic topcolor in which the breaking of electroweak symmetry occurs dynamically through the …
Characterizing And Monitoring Changes In State Of Polymers During Cure And Use -Aging, Andrew Orschel Meyer
Characterizing And Monitoring Changes In State Of Polymers During Cure And Use -Aging, Andrew Orschel Meyer
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Multi Angle Laser Light Scattering (MALLS) and Frequency Dependent Electromagnetic Sensing (FDEMS) provide unique characterizations of polymer systems during cure and use-aging. This research illustrates how MALLS is an extremely accurate technique for absolute characterization of macromolecules, giving molecular weight and size information that other widely used and accepted techniques are incapable of measuring. Application of MALLS to monitoring the changing state of a polyamide-11 system in a water aging environment led to the discovery of an equilibrium molecular weight which is the result of two competing reactions, hydrolysis-degradation and a newly discovered recombination-polymerization reaction. The discovery of this recombination …

Phenomenology Of The Su(2)(L) X Su(2)(I) X U(1)(Y) X U(1)(Y') Model, Shuquan Nie
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
We consider the effective low-energy SU(2) L x SU(2)I x U(1)Y x U(1)Y' model, which is based on the E6 grand unification theory. SU(2)I is a subgroup of SU(3) R and commutes with the electric charge operator.;Higgs bosons in the Standard Model and two-Higgs doublet models are reviewed and studied first. The flavor-changing neutral currents and their effects on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon are discussed. Bounds on masses of Higgs bosons are obtained by requiring that the vacuum is stable and perturbation theory is valid up to a large scale. We introduce Higgs multiplets including two neutral …

Optical Studies Of Layered Inorganic Solids: A Novel Phase Transition And Energy Transfer Studies., Christie L. Larochelle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The optical properties of a group of dicyanoargentates(1) and dicyanoaurates( 1) have been studied. The samples include K2Na[Ag(CN)2I3, Tb[Ag(CN)2]3, Tb[Au(CN)2I3 and a series of compounds of the form Tb,Lal-,[Ag(CN)2]3 with x=0.001, 0.01 and 0.1. Additionally, a novel type of silver-gold mixed- metal sample (L~[A~,Au~-,(CN)~]~ with x=0.9 and 0.5) was synthesized and characterized. The compound K2Na[Ag(CN)2I3 has earlier been shown to exhibit a phenomenon known as luminescence thermochromism, whereby only one emission band is present at very low temperatures and very high temperatures, but a second, lower energy band is also present at intermediate temperatures. This prompted further investigation to explain …

Semiclassical Application Of The Mo/Ller Operators In Reactive Scattering, Sophya V. Garashchuk, J. C. Light
Faculty Publications
Mo/ller operators in the formulation of reaction probabilities in terms of wave packet correlation functions allow us to define the wave packets in the interaction region rather than in the asymptotic region of the potential surface. We combine Mo/ller operators with the semiclassical propagator of Herman and Kluk. This does not involve further approximations and can be used with any initial value representation (IVR) semiclassical propagator. Time propagation in asymptotic regions of the potential due to Mo/ller operators reduces the oscillations of the propagator integrand and improves convergence of the results with respect to the number of trajectories. The effectiveness …
Quasirandom Distributed Gaussian Bases For Bound Problems, Sophya V. Garashchuk, J. C. Light
Quasirandom Distributed Gaussian Bases For Bound Problems, Sophya V. Garashchuk, J. C. Light
Faculty Publications
We introduce quasirandom distributed Gaussian bases (QDGB) that are well suited for bound problems. The positions of the basis functions are chosen quasirandomly while their widths and density are functions of the potential. The basis function overlap and kinetic energy matrix elements are analytical. The potential energy matrix elements are accurately evaluated using few-point quadratures, since the Gaussian basis functions are localized. The resulting QDGB can be easily constructed and is shown to be accurate and efficient for eigenvalue calculation for several multidimensional model vibrational problems. As more demanding examples, we used a 2D QDGB-DVR basis to calculate the lowest …

The production and semi-leptonic decay of heavy quarks have been studied in the photoproduction process e+p → e+ + dijet + e- + X with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.5 pb-1. Events with photon-proton centre-of-mass energies, Wγp, between 134 and 269 GeV and a photon virtuality, Q2, less than 1 GeV2 were selected requiring at least two jets of transverse energy Ejet1(2)T > 7(6) GeV and an electron in the final state. The electrons were identified by employing the ionisation energy loss measurement. The contribution of beauty quarks was determined using the transverse momentum of …

The cross section and the proton structure function F2 for neutral current deep inelastic e+p scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 30 pb-1. The data were collected in 1996 and 1997 at a centre-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. They cover the kinematic range 2.7 < Q2 < 30000 GeV2 and 6-10-5 < cursive Greek chi < 0.65. The variation of F2 with cursive Greek chi and Q2 is well described by next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD as implemented in the DGLAP evolution equations.

A study of the v̄-jet mass spectrum in e+p→v̄X events at a center-of-mass energy 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider at DESY using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1. The mass spectrum is in good agreement with that expected from standard model processes over the v̄-jet mass range studied. No significant excess attributable to the decay of a narrow resonance is observed. By using both e+p→>e+X and e+p-vX data, mass-dependent limits are set on the s-channel production of scalar and vector resonant states. Couplings to first-generation quarks are considered and limits are …

Solid State Nmr Characterization Of Structural And Motional Parameter Distributions In Polyamidoammonium Dendrimers, Dariya Ivanovna Malyarenko
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The characterization of narrow distributions of structural and motional parameters, and their evolution during the broad glass transition, is performed for deuterated PAMAM dendrimer salts using solid state NMR. The broadening of deuteron quadrupole echo (QE) lineshapes is consistent with the presence of narrow hydrogen bond length distribution (sigmar < 0.25 A) at the spacer amide and branching tertiary amine sites. The temperature dependent averaging of the experimental lineshapes is explained on the basis of fast planar librations in the dendrimer interior, and fast rotation and intermediate regime libration (in an asymmetric cone) of the dendrimer termini. The amplitudes of libration are temperature dependent and higher for low generation dendrimers, while librational rates show Arrhenius behavior only within the glass transition region. In this region, the width of log-normal distribution of rates increases with temperature at sites associated with chlorine counterions. The largest distributions are still less than one order of magnitude wide, unlike the dendrimer in solution or the linear polymers. Interpenetrated low generations (G < 3), uniform intermediate generations (G = 3--5) with surface network, and backfolded high generations (G > 5), are distinguished by interior and termini dynamics.;In the regime of fast motion QE lineshapes are highly sensitive to the presence of narrow structural and motional parameter distributions, and provide constraints on motional geometry independent of rates. The precise characterization of narrow log-normal rate distributions in the intermediate regime can be …

Single Positive Pion Electroproduction In The First And Second Resonance Regions Using Clas, Hovanes Egiyan
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The study of single pion electroproduction can provide valuable information on the structure of the nucleon and its excited states. Although these reactions have been studied for decades, never has the npi + channel been measured over the complete phase space of the reaction. The CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) located in Hall B of Jefferson Lab is well-suited for conducting these measurements. The CLAS data were taken using a 1.515 GeV electron beam incident on a liquid H 2 target. The cross sections have been extracted, and their &phis;-dependence has been fit to obtain the sigmaTT, sigma TL and …

Mathematical Models Of Quiescent Solar Prominences, Iain Mckaig
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Magnetic fields in the solar atmosphere suspend and insulate dense regions of cool plasma known as prominences. The convection zone may be the mechanism that both generates and expels this magnetic flux through the photosphere in order to make these formations possible. The connection is examined here by modeling the convection zone as both one-dimensional, then more realistically, two-dimensional.
First a Dirichlet problem on a semi-infinite strip is solved using conformal mapping and the method of images. The base of the strip represents the photosphere where a current distribution can be given as a boundary condition, and the strip extends …

The effect of Ni doping on the Co site of the binary skutterudite CoSb3 is investigated. We measured resistivity, Hall effect, magnetoresistance, thermopower, thermal conductivity, and magnetization of a series of samples of the form Co1-xNixSb3 with x in the range x=0 to x=0.01. We find that Ni takes the tetravalent state Ni4+, assumes the d6 electronic configuration for the lower energy non-bonding orbitals, and gives an electron to the conduction band. Ni doping dramatically suppresses the thermal conductivity, changes the temperature dependence of the thermopower, and increases the carrier concentration. Low temperature anomalies in thermopower, Hall coefficient and magnetoresistance …

n-type Ba filled skutterudites doped with Ni, Ba0.3Ni xCo4-xSb12 with 0⩽x⩽0.2, have been synthesized and the Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity and Hall coefficient have been measured. ZT of 1.2 has been achieved at 800 K with x=0.05. The thermal conductivity data are fitted and the rattling effect of the Ba atoms is identified through a resonance scattering term. The Hall mobility is studied and a mixed scattering mechanism of acoustic phonons and ionized impurities based on a single, rigid band picture is presented. The role of Ni atoms in enhancing the thermoelectric performance is discussed

Several skutterudite antimonides filled with atoms of different kinds, (Ba, M)yCo4Sb12 (M=Ce, La, Sr), have been synthesized by the combination of solid state reaction and melting methods. Thermal conductivity of (Ba,Sr)yCo4 Sb12 samples shows a behavior similar to that of BayCo4Sb12. Adding a small amount of Ce or La to the BayCo4Sb12 system is effective in further reducing the lattice thermal conductivity. The difference in the ionic radii of the two co-filler atoms is the most sensitive factor for scattering of phonons. The multi-filled (Ba, M)yCo4Sb12 (M=Sr, Ce, La) show lower Seebeck coefficients as compared to the single-filled BayCo 4Sb12 …

When y was fixed at 0.3, thermal conductivity decreased with increasing Ni content and reached a minimum value at about x = 0.05. Lattice thermal conductivity decreased with increasing Ni content, monotonously (y ≤ 0.1). Electron concentration and electrical conductivity increased with increasing Ba filling fraction and Ni content. Seebeck coefficient increased with increasing temperature and decreased with increasing …

Single crystals of Sb2Te3 doped with CdS were prepared by a modified Bridgman method from the elements Sb and Te of 5N purity and the CdS compound of 4.5N purity. Samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and by measurement of reflectance in the plasma resonance frequency region at room temperature. Furthermore, we made measurements of temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, Hall and Seebeck coefficients, and thermal conductivity in the temperature range of 4.2–300K. In the process of crystal growth, CdS dissociated and it was assumed that the Cd-atoms formed substitutional defects in the Sb-sublattice (CdSb′) while the S-atoms formed …

Precession of a gyroscope in the presence of a gravitational field is of considerable interest, on account of the soon to be launched satellite test and because of its connection to Mach's principle. Nevertheless, this topic is not generally covered in the curriculum because of the mathematical sophistication required. We examine some of the simple physics involved and argue that by examining simple graviton-elementary particle couplings one can easily understand this phenomenon.

The effect of alloying tin on the antimony site of ytterbium-filled skutterudites is examined. We performed measurements of Hall effect, electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity on the series Yb0.5Co4Sb12-x Snx, with x=0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 0.83. We find that the substitution of tin does not alter the position of the Fermi level with respect to the conduction band of these heavily doped semiconducting samples, but rather it gives rise to a p-type band. Experimental data for x=0.83 can be understood in the context of a two-carrier electrical conduction. Thermal conductivity of these ytterbium-filled skutterudites is significantly suppressed with …

The filled skutterudite compounds based on the binary skutterudite CoSb3 are currently being investigated for their potential application as thermoelectric materials. One route to optimization of these compounds is by doping on the Co site. An obvious candidate for an n-type dopant is Ni, because it has one more electron in its valence shell than Co. We present electrical resistivity, thermopower, Hall effect and magnetic susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline, n-type Co1-xNixSb3 with x less than 0.01. A model which takes into account conduction of electrons residing in the conduction band in addition to hopping conduction within an impurity "band" formed …

We have determined the quadratic slope parameter α for η→3π0 to be α = -0.031(4) from a 99% pure sample of 106η→3π0 decays produced in the reaction π-p→nη close to the η threshold using the Crystal Ball detector at the AGS. The result is four times more precise than the present world data and disagrees with current chiral perturbation theory calculations by about four standard deviations.
