We present a generalization of the variationally stable method of Gao and Starace [B. Gao and A. F. Starace, Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 404 (1988); Phys. Rev. A 39, 4550 (1989)] for two-electron atoms and ions that incorporates a coupled-channel adiabatic hyperspherical approach. Using this approach, we report results for two-photon detachment of H-, in which we have coupled one, two, three, and four adiabatic hyperspherical channels within each term level of the initial, intermediate, and final states. We present results also for the dynamic polarizability of H- as well as for the one-photon detachment cross section. …

Optical retardation measurements were used to probe the chain relaxation dynamics in rubbed polystyrene films of varying thicknesses on glass substrates. A model based on Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts relaxation was developed and used to determine the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the films. Results showed reductions of 15–20 K in Tg for thin films of thicknesses comparable to the radius of gyration as well as for cast films rubbed with different strengths. These results provide evidence of a faster relaxation dynamics relative to the polymer-substrate interface for thinner films and enhanced chain mobility at the polymer-air interface.

We describe improvements to a previously reported hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique [J. Opt. Sec. Am. B 15, 289 (1998)], for measuring all rotational invariants of the first hyperpolarizability tensor. The full hyper-Rayleigh scattering tensor is expressed in terms of its rotationally invariant components leading to a figures of merit corresponding to each of the rotationally invariant tensors. With elliptically polarized incident light, the polarization state and the intensity of the harmonic light are measured at a scattering angle of 45 degrees. We first review the work of the Syracuse group, which uses an effective chiral Lagrangian approach, on meson-meson scattering. An illustration providing evidence for the existence of a strange scalar resonance of mass around 900 MeV is given. An attempt to fit this \kappa (900) together with a similarly obtained \sigma (560) and the well known a_0(980) and f_0(980) into a nonet pattern suggests that the underlying structure is closer to a dual quark-dual antiquark than to a quark-antiquark. A possible mechanism to explain a next higher-in mass scalar meson nonet is also discussed. This involves mixing between q{\bar q} …

Electron attachment into the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of a typical polychloroalkane in the gas phase forms a temporary negative ion in which the impinging electron resides on a combination of local C–Cl σ* orbitals. Because of the antibonding character of these orbitals, these anions may dissociate, producing Cl- with cross sections that vary enormously over the chloroalkane family. In this work, we present absolute total dissociative electron attachment (DEA) cross sections for 33 of these compounds, and we show that the peak values of the cross sections correlate strongly with the vertical attachment energies (VAEs) for formation of …

The result of a search for gaugino pair production with a trilepton signature is reinterpreted in the framework of minimal supergravity (MSUGRA) with R-parity violation via leptonic λ Yukawa couplings. The search used 95 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV recorded by the DO. detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. A large domain of the MSUGRA parameter space is excluded for λ121, λ122>10-4.

A triggering device sensitive to a single photon is discussed. It is based on a balanced quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement proposed by Chuang and Yamamoto [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 4281 (1996)]. The balanced measurement measures the total photon number and obtains no which-path/mode information. Hence, the timing of the photon can be determined without destroying its wave function or entangling the probe field. This could have extensive use in the realization of long-distance quantum communications systems.

The exclusive electroproduction of ω mesons, ep → e ω p, has been studied in the kinematic range 3 < Q2 < 20 GeV2, 40 < W < 120 GeV and |t| < 0.6 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 37.7 pb-1. The ω mesons were identified via the decay ω → π+ π- π0. The exclusive cross section in the above kinematic region is σ(ep) → e ω p = 0.108 ± 0.014 (stat.) ± 0.026(syst.) nb. The reaction ep → e φ p, φ → π+ π- π0, has also been measured. The cross sections, as well as the ratios σ γ·p → ωp/σ γ · p → p0p and σ γ · p → ωp/σγ·p → φp, are presented as a function of W and Q2. Thus, for the first time, the properties of ω electroproduction can be compared to those of p0,φ and J/ψ electroproduction at high W. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

A method including the steps of (a) depositing a metal layer on a selected portion of a silicon substrate under a first set of predetermined conditions to form an metal silicide layer and an intermediate n-type silicon layer; and (b) exposing the metal silicide layer and the n-type silicon layer to a second set of predetermined conditions to form a silicon clathrate film on the selected portion of the silicon substrate, where the intermediate n-type silicon layer acts to bond the silicon clathrate to the silicon substrate to form a silicon clathrate structure.

We report on simulations of DT simplicial gravity for manifolds with the topology of the 4-disk. We find evidence for four phases in a two-dimensional parameter space. In two of these the boundary plays no dynamical role and the geometries are equivalent to those observed earlier for the sphere S^4. In another phase the boundary is maximal and the quantum geometry degenerates to a one dimensional branched polymer. In contrast we provide evidence that the fourth phase is effectively three-dimensional. We find discontinuous phase transitions at all the phase boundaries.

Excess magnetization and anomalous susceptibility loss is observed on antiferromagnetic FeBr2 in an axial field H below and above its H-T-phase boundary between the multicritical temperature (Tm = 4.6 K) and the Néel temperature (TN = 14.1 K). These and other unusual properties of FeBr2 are attributed to frustration-induced intraplanar non-critical spin fluctuations, which can be simulated within the framework of a triaxial version of the 2D-ANNNI model.

In the presence of an applied axial magnetic field Ha the uniaxial antiferromagnets FeCl2 and FeBr2 show fluctuating domain-like antiferromagnetic correlations above the phase boundary Tc(Ha). They are detected by SQUID measurements of the low frequency out-of-phase susceptibility gc″ and indicate a field-induced Griffiths phase at temperatures Tc(Ha) < T < TN. In contrast to FeCl2, important additional frustration-induced intraplanar non-critical contributions to χ″ vs. T are found in FeBr2. For external fields above the Tc(Ha) line, Ha > 2.6 MA/m, they are shown to superimpose linearly on the Griffiths contributions. These dominate at Ha = 2.67 MA/m and are unequivocally modeled within the Landau theory of fluctuations near phase transitions by introducing a Lorentzian Tc distribution.

Events collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) with an energetic jet plus large missing transverse energy can be used to search for physics beyond the standard model. We see no deviations from the expected backgrounds and set upper limits on the production of new processes. We consider in addition the production of light gravitinos and set a limit at 95% confidence level on the breaking scale √F ≥ 217 GeV, which excludes gravitino masses smaller than 1.1 x 10-5 eV/c2.

A measurement of the proton structure function F2(x, Q2) is presented in the kinematic range 0.045 GeV2 < Q2 < 0.65 GeV2 and 6 · 10-7 < x < 1 · 10-3. The results were obtained using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.9pb-1 in e+ p reactions recorded with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Information from a silicon-strip tracking detector, installed in front of the small electromagnetic calorimeter used to measure the energy of the final-state positron at small scattering angles, together with an enhanced simulation of the hadronic final state, has permitted the extension of the kinematic range beyond that of previous measurements. The uncertainties in F2 are typically less than 4%. At the low Q2 values of the present measurement, the rise of F2 at low x is slower than observed in HERA data at higher Q2 and can be described by Regge theory with a constant logarithmic slope δlnF2/δln(1/x). The dependence of F2 on Q2 is stronger than at higher Q2 values, approaching, at the lowest Q2 values of this measurement, a region where F2 becomes nearly proportional to Q2. Preheating after inflation may lead to non-thermal phase transitions with symmetry restoration. These phase transitions may occur even if the total energy density of fluctuations produced during reheating is relatively small as compared with the vacuum energy in the state with restored symmetry. As a result, in some inflationary models one encounters a secondary, non-thermal stage of inflation due to symmetry restoration after preheating. We review the theory of non-thermal phase transitions and make a prediction about the expansion factor during the secondary inflationary stage. We then present the results of lattice simulations which verify these predictions, and discuss possible …

The CLEO detector has been upgraded to include a state of the art particle identification system, based on the Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detector (RICH) technology, in order to take data at the upgraded CESR electron positron collider. The expected performance is reviewed, as well as the preliminary results from an engineering run during the first few months of operation of the CLEO III detector.

A search for antiproton decay has been made at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator. Limits are placed on 13 antiproton decay modes. The results include the first explicit experimental limits on the muonic decay modes of the antiproton, and the first limits on the decay modes ℯ-γγ and ℯ-ω. The most stringent limit is for the decay modep̅→ ℯ-γ. At 90% C.L. we find that τ p̅¯ / B ( p̅→ ℯ-γ)>7x105 yr. The most stringent limit for decay modes with a muon in the final state …

We report on a study of the supersymmetric anharmonic oscillator computed using a euclidean lattice path integral. Our numerical work utilizes a Fourier accelerated hybrid Monte Carlo scheme to sample the path integral. Using this we are able to measure massgaps and check Ward identities to a precision of better than one percent. We work with a non-standard lattice action which we show has an {\it exact} supersymmetry for arbitrary lattice spacing in the limit of zero interaction coupling. For the interacting model we show that supersymmetry is restored in the continuum limit without fine tuning. This is contrasted with …

Laser spark phenomena are studied in air and ammonia-oxygen mixtures by the use of a two-dimensional, axially-symmetric, time-accurate computational fluid dynamic model. The initial laser spark temperature distribution is generated to simulate a post-breakdown profile that is consistent with theoretical, experimental, and computational investigations for a nominal 10-ns optical breakdown laser pulse. Thermodynamic properties of various species are extended to 35,000 K to cover the range of the initial temperature distribution. The developed computational model includes a kinetics mechanism that implements plasma equilibrium kinetics in ionized regions.

The narrow-line region (NLR) of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 3393 is dominated by a symmetric structure which appears as S-shaped arms in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. These arms, which occupy the central few arcseconds of the nucleus, border a linear, triple-lobed radio source. We use HST imaging and spectra, ground-based optical images, long-slit spectra, Fabry-Perot imaging spectroscopy, and VLA radio data to perform a detailed investigation of the kinematics and ionization of the line-emitting gas in NGC 3393 and of its relationship with the relativistic gas responsible for the radio emission. Magnetization reversal in transition-metal nanowires is investigated. Model calculations explain why magnetization reversal is localized, as opposed to the sometimes assumed delocalized coherent-rotation and curling modes. The localization is a quite general phenomenon caused by morphological inhomogenities and occurring in both polycrystalline and single-crystalline wires. In the polycrystalline limit, the competition between interatomic exchange and anisotropy gives rise to a variety of random-anisotropy effects, whereas nearly single-crystalline wires exhibit a weak localization of the nucleation mode. Model predictions are used to explain the coercive and magnetic-viscosity behavior of Co (and Ni) nanowires electrodeposited in self-assembled alumina pores.

We investigate the spin-dependent conductance of the Co/Cu multilayers in the current-perpendicular-tothe- plane (CPP) geometry. Using a realistic tight-binding model for the electronic band structure of the multilayer, and introducing disorder in the on-site atomic energies we calculate the conductance and giant magnetoresistance (GMR) within the quantum-mechanical linear response theory by performing averaging over random disorder configurations. By varying the thickness and the number of individual layers and the degree of disorder in the multilayers, we analyze factors influencing the CPP GMR. Analytic expressions for the magnetostatic energy and the dipolar fields are derived. The influence of the aspect ratio and the spacing between the elements on the magnetostatic coupling is investigated. It is found that increasing the aspect ratio reduces the critical distance between the elements, above which the magnetostatic inter-element coupling can be neglected.

The occurrence of equatorial density depletions in the nightside F region ionosphere has been investigated by using observations gathered by the polar-orbiting Dynamics Explorer 2 satellite from August 1981 to February 1983. A variety of electric field/plasma drift patterns were observed within these depletions, including updrafting, downdrafting, bifurcating, converging, subsonic, and supersonic flows. The depletions, 116 events in total, are distributed over two groups: group I (eveningside depletions) consists of the events in the 1900–2300 MLT sector, and group II (morningside depletions) are the events in the 2300–0600 MLT sector. We consider the interaction of a two-level atom inside an optical parametric oscillator. In the weak-driving-field limit, we essentially have an atom-cavity system driven by the occasional pair of correlated photons, or weakly squeezed light. We find that we may have holes, or dips, in the spectrum of the fluorescent and transmitted light. This occurs even in the strong-coupling limit when we find holes in the vacuum-Rabi doublet. Also, spectra with a subnatural linewidth may occur. These effects disappear for larger driving fields, unlike the spectral narrowing obtained in resonance fluorescence in a squeezed vacuum; here it is important that …

High quality GaN crystals can be grown on sapphire by hydride vapor phase epitaxy. The thermal expansion mismatch between sapphire and GaN produces strain in the GaN crystal as it is cooled from the growth temperature to room temperature. The strain is evidenced by shifts in the photoluminescence and reflectance line positions. By analyzing the surface strain as the crystal thickness is increased, the thickness required to obtain zero surface strain can be estimated. This structure might provide a lattice matched and thermally matched substrate for further epitaxial growth of GaN.

Time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy at 2 K was used to measure the radiative recombination lifetime of the allowed (Γ5) and forbidden (Γ6) free excitons in ZnO. The measurements were made on a sample containing internal strain, which altered the sample symmetry, and resulted in relaxed selection rules, allowing the Γ6 exciton to be observed. A radiative recombination lifetime of 259 ps was measured for the Γ5 exciton and 245 ps for the Γ6 exciton. The decay of the free excitons was of single-exponential form, and the decay times were obtained using a least-squares fit …

An account is presented of our studies of the order-disorder phase transitions in KSCN, RbSCN, and CsSCN. These are based on parameter-free interionic potentials based on the Gordon-Kim modified electron gas formalism extended to molecular ions. We performed static structural relaxations and supercell molecular dynamics and predicted with reasonable accuracy the temperatures for the onset of the transitions. In particular, we address the question of how the SCN- ions disorder to yield subsequent structural transformations. We found high-temperature phases of average Fm3m symmetry for both KSCN and RbSCN. In this paper we analyze GaAs grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) and doped with four different iron concentrations between and . From temperature dependent current‐voltage measurements we observed the highest resistivity in the lowest doped sample. We also quantified the activation energy. These results together with those of time resolved photoluminescence measurements indicate that in the sample with the lowest Fe concentration, EL2 may be dominant. From the analysis of the time resolved photoluminescence measurements, the intrinsic EL2 concentration and the electron and hole capture cross sections of Fe in GaAs were estimated. © 2000 The Electrochemical Society. …
