Studies of the structure of particle tracks have led to models of track effects based on radial dose and radiobiological target theory that have been very successful in describing and predicting track effects in physical, chemical, and biological systems. For describing mammalian cellular inactivation two inactivation modes are required, called gamma-kill aid ion-kill, the first due to synergistic effects of delta rays from adjacent ion paths thus resembling the effects from gamma rays, and the second to the effects of single ion transits through a cell nucleus. Mn1.56Co0.96Ni0.48O4 spinel was sputter deposited using a series of oxygen partial pressures. Electrical resistivity versus temperature and thermopower versus temperature measurements at each oxygen partial pressure were made. The variations of the thermopower and resistivity with oxygen partial pressure are consistent with a change in the ratio of Mn3+ to Mn4+ cations, which occurs due to changes of oxygen content of the material. The weak temperature dependence of the thermopower indicates small polaron hopping is the charge transport mechanism. Combining the models of Mott and Schnakenberg to analyze the transport data, we find that the Debye temperature (or frequency) is …

A study of the high angular momentum particles ‘atmosphere’ near the Schwarzschild black hole horizon suggested that strong gravitational interactions occur at invariant distance of the order of 3√M [2]. We present a generalization of this result to the Kerr-Newman black hole case. It is shown that the larger charge and angular momentum black hole bears, the larger invariant distance at which strong gravitational interactions occur becomes. This invariant distance is of order 3√r+2(r+ − r−). This implies that the Planckian structure of the Hawking radiation of extreme black holes is completely broken.

Mn1.56Co0.96Ni0.48O4 spinel films were sputter deposited onto silicon substrates using a series of oxygen partial pressures. Fourier transform infrared transmission and reflectance, and Raman scattering measurements were made. The 1–25 μm wavelength range was examined using these optical techniques. The complex index of refraction was calculated for this entire wavelength range. Infrared active vibrations were analyzed using multiple oscillator analysis, Kramers–Kronig analysis, and derivative reflectance spectroscopy. The Raman and infrared active lattice vibrations were observed to shift with increasing oxygen partial pressure during film deposition, and were consistent with the earlier published shift in Debye frequency calculated from resistivity data. …

We reconsider the potential energy surface of the He–LiH system recently examined by Gianturco and co-workers [F. A. Gianturco et al., Chem. Phys. 215, 227 (1997)]. We compute the He–LiH interaction energy at the CCSD(T) level using large correlation consistent atomic basis sets supplemented with bond functions. To capture the severe anisotropy of the He–LiH potential, we interpolate our ab initio points in the angular direction with cubic splines, then expand the splines in terms of Legendre polynomials. The resulting smooth potential surface differs substantially from that of Gianturco et al.; in particular, our attractive He–LiH well is more …

The structure and thermodynamic stability of methylnitrite and its anion are studied by the infinite-order coupled-cluster method with all singles and doubles and noniterative inclusion of triple excitations [CCSD(T)] and Hartree–Fock-density-functional theory (HFDFT). We have optimized the geometries and computed the harmonic vibrational frequencies of major fragments, H2, CH, NH, OH, CN, N2, CO, NO, O2, CH2, NH2, H2O, HCN, HNC, HCO, HNO, O2H, CO2, NO2, CH3, NH3, CNH2, HCO2, HNO2, CH3N, CH3O, CH3NO, CH3ON, CH2NO2, and their anions, when the latter exist. Two recent works have shown that at small Knudsen number ~K! the pressure and temperature profiles in plane Poiseuille flow exhibit a different qualitative behavior from the profiles obtained by the Navier-Stokes equations. Tij and Santos [J. Stat. Phys. 76, 1399 (1994)] used the Bhatnagar-Gross-Kook model to show that the temperature profile is bimodal and the pressure profile is nonconstant. Malek-Mansour, Baras, and Garcia [Physica A 240, 255 (1997)] qualitatively confirmed these predictions in computer experiments using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method (DSMC). Atomic two-photon J = 0↔J = 1 transitions are forbidden for photons of the same energy. This selection rule is related to the fact that photons obey Bose-Einstein statistics. We have searched for small violations of this selection rule by studying transitions in atomic Ba. We set a limit on the probability v that photons are in exchange-antisymmetric states: v<1.2×10-7.

We consider the contribution of neutron stars and black holes to the dynamical mass of galactic halos. In particular, we show that if these compact objects were produced by an early generation of stars with initial metallicity 10-4 Z, they can contribute at most 30%-40% of the Galactic halo mass without creating supersolar levels of enrichment. We show that the case for halo neutron stars and black holes cannot be rejected on metal overproduction arguments alone because of the critical factor of the choice of progenitor metallicity in determining the yields. I demonstrate that the amplitude for high-energy scattering can be factorized as a convolution of the contributions due to fast and slow fields. The fast and slow fields interact by means of Wilson-line operators—infinite gauge factors ordered along the straight line. The resulting factorization formula gives a starting point for a new approach to the effective action for high-energy scattering in QCD.

We have observed violet photon emission resulting from energy-pooling collisions between ultracold Rb atoms illuminated by two colors of near-resonant infrared laser light. We have used this emission as a probe of doubly excited state ultracold collision dynamics. By varying the detuning of the lasers, we have clearly identified the effect of spontaneous emission on the collision process.

Activity has many manifestations, from dark spots to bright regions, to the presence of the heated chromosphere, to the superheated corona. Sunspots are extended, strongly magnetic regions on the Sun. Photospheric faculae are generally visible only at the limb. Polar faculae are smaller than the main-zone faculae. The contributions of the active region faculae and the facular network are at least as important as the solar spots in augmenting the solar emission.

We re-analysed the behaviour of coronal activity of the RS CVn-type binaries as a function of stellar and orbital parameters. Highly significant correlations were found between the x-ray luminosity L_x and the stellar radius R, the Roche lobe filling fraction \Gamma, and the Alfven radius RA. The correlations of L_x with the mass M, the absolute magnitude M_V, the surface gravity g, the Roche lobe filling fraction \Gamma, and the Alfven radius RA are likely to be due to correlations of these quantities with the stellar radius R. A `multi-site, multi-wavelength' campaign on the eclipsing RS CVn binary CF Tuc was carried out in 1996 over both optical (photometry and spectroscopy) and radio (microwave) ranges. The microwave data was taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). It covered slightly more than one complete orbital cycle at 4.8 and 8.64 GHz in one continuous run. There was also coverage of about 25% of the light curve at 1.38 and 2.38 GHz. High dispersion spectroscopy was obtained using the McLellan 1m telescope and échelle spectrograph at Mt John University Observatory (New Zealand). A brief description of the calibration procedures for the millimetric Marmara Radio Telescope, MRT-2 is presented. Observations carried out during the spectroscopic calibration work is indicative of daily variations of Ozone line of sight density over the telescope location. Magnetodielectrical polymer compositional materials containing carbonyl iron (CI) were obtained. The changes of permittivity and permeability, loss angle tangent, resistivity, mechanical and electrical properties, depending on the content of carbonyl iron have been investigated. It is shown that the magnetodielectrical materials with 20-40% mass content of carbonyl iron have possible practical use.

The energetics of spherical clusters of elements Fe in bcc, Ca and Pb in fcc, and C in diamond structure have been investigated by using emprical many-body potential energy function which contains two- and three-body inteactions. In the variation of average interaction energy per atom (E_b) versus cluster size (N_{sh}; number of shells) only carbon clusters have magic numbers at 5, 8, 11 and 14 shells. E_b versus N_{sh} becomes smooth after 15 shells for carbon, however this variation becomes smooth for the other elements after 10 shells. We study the many-body effects described by the local-field corrections on the mobility of quasi-one dimensional electron systems. The low temperature mobility due to remote-impurity doping and interface-roughness scattering is calculated within the relaxation time approximation. We find that correlation effects significantly reduce the mobility at low density.

The theory of optical phonons and their confinement in heterostructures is reviewed with analogies made to the theory of acoustic phonons. The dielectric continuum (DC) model is obtained when bulk dispersion is ignored and the hybrid model is found when dispersion is included. The issue of boundary conditions is investigated and the solutions are shown with comparisons made using electron-phonon scattering.

An analytical solution to the Schrödinger equation for a multiple quantum well system subjected to an externally applied electric field the growth direction and an externally applied tilted magnetic field are obtained and the results are discussed. Within the framework of the strong-coupling polaron theory and the bulk phonon approximation we report the possibility and criteria in achieving stable bipolaron states in confined media. We use a simple model of two electrons constrained within an anisotropic three dimensional parabolic potential box of tunable barrier slopes. Conforming the confining potential from one geometry to the other, we obtain an explicit tracking of the stability criteria as a function of the degree of confinement uncovering all low dimensional major geometric configurations of common interest.

Regular Lagrangians with holomonic constraints are treated as singular systems using the canonical method. The Lagrange multipliers are introduced as generalized coordinates. The regular Lagrangians are extended to be singular and the Hamiltonian formulation is obtained. The equations of motion are written as total differential equations in terms of the time t and the Lagrange multipliers. It is also shown that Lagrange multipliers can be determined from the integrability conditions.
