Measurements of the proton structure function F2 for 0.6 < Q2 < 17 GeV2 and 1.2 × 10-5 < cursive Greek chi < 1.9 × 10 -3 from ZEUS 1995 shifted vertex data are presented. From ZEUS F2 data the slopes dF2/d ln Q2 at fixed cursive Greek chi and din F2/d ln(1/cursive Greek chi) for cursive Greek chi < 0.01 at fixed Q2 are derived. For the latter, E665 data are also used. The transition region in Q2 is explored using the simplest non-perturbative models and NLO QCD. The data at very low Q2 ≤ 0.65 GeV2 are described successfully by a combination of generalised vector meson dominance and Regge theory. From a NLO QCD fit to ZEUS data the gluon density in the proton is extracted in the range 3 × 10-5 < cursive Greek chi < 0.7. Data from NMC and BCDMS constrain the fit at large cursive Greek chi. Assuming the NLO QCD description to be valid down to Q2 ∼ 1 GeV2, it is found that the qq̄ sea distribution is still rising at small cursive Greek chi and the lowest Q2 values whereas the gluon distribution is strongly suppressed.

Mills et al. Reply: In their Comment on our Letter [1], Gel’mukhanov and Ågren [2] reiterate recent assertions [3] based on their earlier theoretical studies [4]. The primary purpose of their Comment is apparently to refute our stated conclusion that core-excited-state localization/ delocalization mechanisms are irrelevant to interpretations of reported Raman scattering experiments on homonuclear diatomic molecules.

The cross section for dijet photoproduction at high transverse energies is presented as a function of the transverse energies and the pseudorapidities of the jets. The measurement is performed using a sample of ep-interactions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.3 pb-1, recorded by the ZEUS detector. Jets are defined by applying a kT-clustering algorithm to the hadrons observed in the final state. The measured cross sections are compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations. In a kinematic regime where theoretical uncertainties are expected to be small, the measured cross sections are higher than these calculations.

Charged particle production in neutral current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) has been studied using the ZEUS detector. The evolution of the mean multiplicities, scaled momenta and transverse momenta in Q2 and cursive Greek chi for 10 < Q2 < 5120 GeV2 and cursive Greek chi > 6 × 10-4 has been investigated in the current and target fragmentation regions of the Breit frame. Distributions in the target region, using HERA data for the first time, are compared to distributions in the current region. Predictions based on MLLA and LPHD are inconsistent with the data.

Characterization Of The Physical Properties Of Iron Polyimide Nanocomposites, Russell A. Wincheski Jan 1999

Characterization Of The Physical Properties Of Iron Polyimide Nanocomposites, Russell A. Wincheski

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The discovery of tunneling magneto-resistance has led to a great deal of interest in the study of ferromagnet-insulator-ferromagnet (FIF) systems due to potential sensor and magnetic storage applications. An analysis of the band structure of the 3d ferromagnets shows that the conduction electrons become spin polarized by the molecular field. The transmission coefficient of these electrons across a tunneling gap therefore depends upon the relative alignment of the molecular field between the two ferromagnets.;In this work the manufacture of such tunneling gaps through compression molding of powdered ferromagnetic iron with a high performance polyimide has been studied for the first …

Time-Resolved Reflection High-Energy Electron Diffraction Study Of The Ge(111)-C(2×8)-(1×1) Phase Transition, Xinglin Zeng, Bo Lin, Ibrahim El-Kholy, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The dynamics of the Ge(111)-c(2×8)-(1×1) phase transition is investigated by 100-ps time-resolved reflection high-energy electron diffraction. A laser pulse heats the surface while a synchronized electron pulse is used to obtain the surface diffraction pattern. Slow heating shows that the adatoms in Ge(111)-c(2×8) start to disorder at ∼510 K and are converted to a disordered adatom arrangement at 573 K. For heating with 100-ps laser pulses, the Ge(111)-c(2×8) reconstructed adatom arrangement starts to disorder at 584±16K, well above the onset temperature of ∼510 K for the disordering of Ge(111)-c(2×8) observed for slow …

Electroproduction Of Omega (783) Mesons Using Clas At Jefferson Lab, Alan Clayton Coleman Jan 1999

Electroproduction Of Omega (783) Mesons Using Clas At Jefferson Lab, Alan Clayton Coleman

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Electroproduction of omega(783) mesons from a proton target has been measured in a search for so called "missing baryon resonances". A 4.0 GeV electron beam was used. The scattered electrons were measured in coincidence with the recoiling proton and the positive pion from the omega decay. Missing mass techniques were applied to identify the omega in the final state, and to reduce the rho(770) contribution. The data show the omega very clearly on a smooth background originating predominantly from three-pion phase space. Yields have been extracted, and the W and t dependencies determined. The t dependence is mostly monotonic for …

Thermoelastic And Photoelastic Full-Field Stress Measurement, Deonna Faye Woolard Jan 1999

Thermoelastic And Photoelastic Full-Field Stress Measurement, Deonna Faye Woolard

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Photoelasticity is an optical technique that measures the difference of the principal stresses plus the principal stress direction. A complementary technique is thermoelasticity which measures the sum of the principal stresses. Combining these two full-field, non-contact nondestructive evaluation techniques allows the individual stress components to be measured. One of the main difficulties in merging these two measurement systems is in identifying an appropriate surface coating. Thermoelasticity demands a highly emissive surface, while photoelasticity requires a thick, stress-birefringent, transparent coating with a retro-reflective backing. Two coatings have been identified that can be used for combined thermoelastic and photoelastic stress measurements: PMMA …

Semiclassical Calculation Of Cumulative Reaction Probabilities, Sophya V. Garashchuk, D. J. Tannor Jan 1999

Semiclassical Calculation Of Cumulative Reaction Probabilities, Sophya V. Garashchuk, D. J. Tannor

Faculty Publications

Calculation of chemical reaction rates lies at the very core of theoretical chemistry. The essential dynamical quantity which determines the reaction rate is the energy-dependent cumulative reaction probability, N(E), whose Boltzmann average gives the thermal rate constant, k(T). Converged quantum mechanical calculations of N(E) remain a challenge even for three- and four-atom systems, and a longstanding goal of theoreticians has been to calculate N(E) accurately and efficiently using semiclassical methods. In this article we present a variety of methods for achieving this goal, by combining semiclassical initial value …

Cumulative Reaction Probability In Terms Of Reactant-Product Wave Packet Correlation Functions, Sophya V. Garashchuk, D. J. Tannor Jan 1999

Cumulative Reaction Probability In Terms Of Reactant-Product Wave Packet Correlation Functions, Sophya V. Garashchuk, D. J. Tannor

Faculty Publications

We present new expressions for the cumulative reaction probability (N(E)), cast in terms of time-correlation functions of reactant and product wave packets. The derivation begins with a standard trace expression for the cumulative reaction probability, expressed in terms of the reactive scattering matrix elements in an asymptotic internal basis. By combining the property of invariance of the trace with a wave packet correlation function formulation of reactive scattering, we obtain an expression for N(E) in terms of the correlation matrices of incoming and outgoing wave packets which are arbitrary in the internal coordinates. This formulation, like other recent formulations of …

Surface Resistance Measurements Of Superconducting Niobium Samples With A Triaxial Cavity, Paul Martin Boccard Jan 1999

Surface Resistance Measurements Of Superconducting Niobium Samples With A Triaxial Cavity, Paul Martin Boccard

Physics Theses & Dissertations

This experimental study has revealed and investigated many of the physical issues that affect accurate measurement of the surface resistance for small samples consisting of superconducting niobium films on copper substrates. It is believed that this work provides the groundwork for future research directed towards solving this important problem. Accurate measurement of surface resistance for such samples is needed to allow the rapid evaluation and optimization of the deposition parameters necessary for manufacturing low-loss superconducting niobium films.

A superconducting niobium triaxial cavity was investigated to determine its suitability for measuring the residual surface resistance of copper samples that were sputter-coated …

Efficient Dynamic Unstructured Methods And Applications For Transonic Flows And Hypersonic Stage Separation, Xiaobing Luo Jan 1999

Efficient Dynamic Unstructured Methods And Applications For Transonic Flows And Hypersonic Stage Separation, Xiaobing Luo

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Relative-moving boundary problems have a wide variety of applications. They appear in staging during a launch process, store separation from a military aircraft, rotor-stator interaction in turbomachinery, and dynamic aeroelasticity.

The dynamic unstructured technology (DUT) is potentially a strong approach to simulate unsteady flows around relative-moving bodies, by solving time-dependent governing equations. The dual-time stepping scheme is implemented to improve its efficiency while not compromising the accuracy of solutions. The validation of the implicit scheme is performed on a pitching NACA0012 airfoil and a rectangular wing with low reduced frequencies in transonic flows. All the matured accelerating techniques, including the …

The shapes of jets with transverse energies, EjetT, up to 45 GeV produced in neutral- and charged-current deep inelastic e+p scattering (DIS) at Q2 > 100 GeV2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets are identified using a cone algorithm in the η-φ plane with a cone radius of one unit. The jets become narrower as EjetT increases. The jet shapes in neutral- and charged-current DIS are found to be very similar. The jets in neutral-current DIS are narrower than those in resolved processes in photoproduction and closer to those in direct-photon processes for the same ranges in …

Exclusive production of ρ0 and J/ψ mesons in e+p collisions has been studied with the ZEUS detector in the kinematic range 0.25 < Q2 < 50 GeV2, 20 < W < 167 GeV for the ρ0 data and 2 < Q2 < 40 GeV2, 50 < W < 150 GeV for the J/ψ data. Cross sections for exclusive ρ0 and J/ψ production have been measured as a function of Q2, W and t. The spin-density matrix elements r0400, r11-1i and Re r510 have been determined for exclusive ρ0 production as well as r0400 and r041-1 for exclusive J/ψ production. The results are discussed in the context of theoretical models invoking soft and hard phenomena.

Inclusive photoproduction of D*± mesons has been measured for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 28OGeV and photon virtuality Q2 < IGeV2. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb-1. Total and differential cross sections as functions of the D* transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are presented in restricted kinematical regions and the data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations using the "massive charm" and "massless charm" schemes. The measured cross sections are generally above the NLO calculations, in particular in the forward (proton) direction. The large data sample also allows the study of dijet production associated with charm. A significant resolved as well as a direct photon component contribute to the cross section. Leading order QCD Monte Carlo calculations indicate that the resolved contribution arises from a significant charm component in the photon. A massive charm NLO parton level calculation yields lower cross sections compared to the measured results in a kinematic region where the resolved photon contribution is significant.

The inclusive forward jet cross section in deep inelastic e+p scattering has been measured in the region of cursive Greek chi-Bjorken, 4.5 · 10-4 to 4.5 · 10-2. This measurement is motivated by the search for effects of BFKL-like parton shower evolution. The cross section at hadron level as a function of cursive Greek chi is compared to cross sections predicted by various Monte Carlo models. An excess of forward jet production at small cursive Greek chi is observed, which is not reproduced by models based on DGLAP parton shower evolution. The Colour Dipole model describes the data reasonably well. …

Analyzing Mean Transport Equations Of Turbulence And Linear Disturbances In Decaying Flows, W. D. Thacker, T. B. Gatski, C. E. Grosch

CCPO Publications

The decay of laminar disturbances and turbulence in mean shear-free flows is studied. In laminar flows, such disturbances are linear superpositions of modes governed by the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. In turbulent flows, disturbances are described through transport equations for representative mean quantities. The link between a description based on a deterministic evolution equation and a probability-based mean transport equation is established. Because an uncertainty in initial conditions exists in the laminar as well as the turbulent regime, a probability distribution must be defined even in the laminar case. Using this probability distribution, it is shown that the exponential decay of the …

Synthesis Of Bulk Polycrystalline Indium Nitride At Subatmospheric Pressures., Jeffrey Dyck, K. Kash, C. Hayman, A. Argoitia, M. Grossner, J. Angus, W.-L. Zhou

Jeffrey Dyck

Polycrystalline, wurtzitic indium nitride was synthesized by saturating indium with nitrogen from microwave plasma sources. The structure was confirmed by x-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, and elemental analysis. Two types of growth were observed: (i) dendritic crystals on the original melt surface, and (ii) hexagonal platelets adjacent to the In metal source on the upper edge of the crucible. The method does not involve a foreign substrate to initiate growth and is a potential alternative to the high-pressure techniques normally associated with bulk growth of indium nitride. The lattice parameters were a = 3.5366 ± 0.0005 angstrom and c = 5.7009 …

While significant strides have been made in the optimization of GaN-based devices on foreign substrates, a more attractive alternative would be homoepitaxy on GaN substrates. The primary motivation of this work is to explore the growth of thick films of GaN from the melt for the ultimate use as substrate material. We have previously demonstrated the synthesis of polycrystalline, wurtzitic gallium nitride and indium nitride by saturating gallium metal and indium metal with atomic nitrogen from a microwave plasma source. Plasma synthesis avoids the high equilibrium pressures required when molecular nitrogen is used as the nitrogen source. Here we report …

Semi-Insulating Semiconductor Heterostructures: Optoelectronic Properties And Applications, David D. Nolte Dec 1998

Semi-Insulating Semiconductor Heterostructures: Optoelectronic Properties And Applications, David D. Nolte

David D Nolte

This review covers a spectrum of optoelectronic properties of and uses for semi-insulating semiconductor heterostructures and thin films, including epilayers and quantum wells. Compensation by doping, implantation, and nonstoichiometric growth are described in terms of the properties of point defects and Fermi level stabilization and pinning. The principal optical and optoelectronic properties of semi-insulating epilayers and heterostructures, such as excitonic electroabsorption of quantum-confined excitons, are described, in addition to optical absorption by metallic or semimetallic precipitates in these layers. Low-temperature grown quantum wells that have an arsenic-rich nonstoichiometry and a supersaturated concentration of grown-in vacancies are discussed. These heterostructures experience …

We search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a massive vector boson in 91 ± 7 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume the Higgs scalar H0 decays to a bb̅ pair with branching ratio β, and we consider the hadronic decays of the vector boson V (W or Z). Observations are consistent with background expectations. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on σ (pp̅H0V) β as a function of the scalar mass (MH0) …

Density Of Zeros On The Lee-Yang Circle Obtained From Magnetization Data Of A Two-Dimensional Ising Ferromagnet, Christian Binek

Christian Binek Publications

In order to provide experimental access to the statistical theory of Lee and Yang [Phys. Rev. 87, 410 (1952)] the density function g(θ) of zeros on the Lee-Yang circle has been determined for the first time by analyzing isothermal magnetization data m(H) of the Ising ferromagnet FeCl2 in axial magnetic fields H at temperatures 34≤T≤99 K. The validity of our approach is demonstrated by the perfect agreement of magnetic specific heat data as calculated from g(θ) and m(H) via Maxwell's relation. Moreover, the correct in-plane exchange constant of FeCl2 emerges from the …

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Results from ab initio calculations at the CCSD(T) level of theory are presented for krypton monofluoride (KrF), krypton monofluoride cation (KrF+), linear, ground-state krypton difluoride (KrF2), the triplet state of krypton difluoride, and the krypton–fluorine van der Waals complex (Kr–F2). These are the first calculations demonstrating that KrF is a bound molecule, in agreement with experimental observation. When corrected for basis-set superposition error, the calculated potential displays quantitative agreement with the attractive wall of the experimentally measured potential curve. Results are also presented for KrF+ and linear KrF2 which yield accurate values for their dissociation energies. The triplet state of …

In this project we study new nanocrystalline and nanocomposite structures that have high potential for permanent-magnet development. These materials, which can be synthesized to have either very high or intermediate coercivities, have many applications in electric power, transportation, and information-storage industries. There is great interest in further development of understanding and application of these materials. Following are brief discussions of recent research highlights for the present grant.

Classical Thomson scattering—the scattering of low-intensity light by electrons—is a linear process, in that it does not change the frequency of the radiation; moreover, the magnetic-field component of light is not involved. But if the light intensity is extremely high (~1018 Wcm–2), the electrons oscillate during the scattering process with velocities approaching the speed of light. In this relativistic regime, the effect of the magnetic and electric fields on the electron motion should become comparable, and the effective electron mass will increase. Consequently, electrons in such high fields are predicted to quiver nonlinearly, moving in figure-eight patterns …

Laser light is a convenient way of transporting both electric and magnetic fields. When an electron encounters light, however, it is usually the electric field that does the talking; the magnetic part of light is less influential since its effect on the electron is proportional to the electron's speed as a fraction of the speed of light (c). In new experiments at the University of Michigan this is all changed since the intensity of the laser light used is so great (a terawatt of power, compared to a milliwatt for a laser in a CD player) that the electrons in …
