Velocity–Space Drag And Diffusion In A Model, Two-Dimensional Plasma, Mark Anthony Reynolds, B.D. Fried, G.J. Morales

The quasilinear fluctuation integral is calculated for a two-dimensional, unmagnetized plasma ~composed of charged rods!, and is expressed in terms of Fokker–Planck coefficients. It is found that in two dimensions, the enhanced fluctuations generated by fast electrons lead to anomalously large transport coefficients. In particular, the effect of a small population of fast electrons is only weakly dependent on their density. In three dimensions, the effect of fast electrons is masked by the dominant approximation, but higher-order terms describe processes similar to those in two dimensions, and these terms can become significant for weakly stable plasmas. The differences between two …

A search for the gamma decay of the Giant Dipole Resonance built on superdeformed nuclear configurations was made. The superdeformed states of the Eu-143 nucleus were populated using the reaction Pd-110(Cl-37, 4n)Eu-143 at a beam energy of 165 MeV. High energy gamma-rays were detected in 8 large BaF2 scintillators in coincidence with discrete transitions measured with part of the NORDBALL array (17 HPGe detectors and a 2 pi multiplicity filter). Spectra of high-energy gamma-rays gated by low-energy transitions from states fed by the superdeformed bands show an excess yield in the 7-10 MeV region with respect to those gated by …

The reaction γ p → J/ψ p has been studied in ep interactions using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The cross section for elastic J/ψ photoproduction has been measured as a function of the photon-proton centre of mass energy W in the range 40 < W < 140 GeV at a median photon virtuality Q2 of 5 × 10-5 GeV2. The photoproduction cross section, σγp→J/ψp, is observed to rise steeply with W. A fit to the data presented in this paper to determine the parameter δ in the form σγp→J/ψp α Wδ yields the value δ = 0.92±0.14±0.10. The differential cross section dσ/d|t| is presented over the range |t| < 1.0 GeV2 where t is the square of the four-momentum exchanged at the proton vertex. dσ/d|t| falls exponentially with a slope parameter of 4.6 ± 0.4-0.6+0.4 GeV-2. The measured decay angular distributions are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. © Springer-Verlag 1997.

Electromagnetic Reaction Cross Sections In Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions, Jack Dostal Jan 1997

Electromagnetic Reaction Cross Sections In Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions, Jack Dostal

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The goal of this project was to produce a computer program to predict the cross section of relativistic heavy ion collisions between given projectile and target nuclei. An explanation of the usefulness of relativistic heavy ion collision analysis is presented. The use of the Weiszacker-Williams method of virtual quanta for enhancing reaction cross sections of this type is discussed. Quantum-mechanical corrections to the semiclassical Weiszacker-Williams method are introduced. C++ computer code has been developed to calculate both semiclassical (as a check) and quantum-mechanical cross sections for these types of reactions. Preliminary results are given for the heavy ion reaction ( …

The differential cross section dσ/dt for elastic ρ0 photoproduction, γp → ρ0ρ (ρ0 → π+π-), has been measured in ep interactions at HERA. The squared four-momentum exchanged at the proton vertex, t, has been determined directly by measuring the momentum of the scattered proton using the ZEUS Leading Proton Spectrometer (LPS), a large scale system of silicon micro-strip detectors operating close to the HERA proton beam. The LPS allows the measurement of the momentum of high energy protons scattered at small angles with accuracies of 0.4% for the longitudinal momentum and 5 MeV for the transverse momentum. Photoproduction of ρ0 …

Femtosecond Photoemission Study Of Ultrafast Electron Dynamics On Cu(100), J. Cao, Y. Gao, R. J. D. Miller, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali, D. A. Mantell

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The energy dependence of the relaxation of photoexcited electrons in copper was measured using femtosecond time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to within 0.3 eV above the Fermi level. By performing lifetime measurements under different surface conditions, several surface dynamical processes were investigated. In particular, an anomalous long lifetime feature, which cannot be explained with Fermi-liquid theory, was observed in the lifetime-energy curve. This feature was found originating from the photoexcitation of the strongly localized Cu 3d electrons. ©1997 American Physical Society

Microwave Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposited Diamond Tips For Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Sacharia Albin, Jianli Zheng, John B. Cooper, Weihai Fu, Arnel C. Lavarias

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Diamond microparticles were grown on etched tungsten wires using a microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition process. The apexes on cubo-octahedral particles bound by {100} and {111} facets were effectively used as tunneling tips for scanning tunneling microscopy. The atomically resolved surface image of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite was acquired. Tunneling characteristics revealed a higher electron emission from the diamond tips than that from the platinum–iridium tips. The same diamond tips were used to produce surface indentation and its image. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Cp Violation In K-Long Decays, Gregory Dominick Dorata Jan 1997

Cp Violation In K-Long Decays, Gregory Dominick Dorata

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The main topic of this dissertation concerns alternative models of CP violation and the rates predicted by these models for the particular decay {dollar}K\sb{lcub}L{rcub}\to\pi\sp0\nu\bar\nu .{dollar} This decay is promising as a probe of the origin of CP violation in the kaon system. It is virtually free of hadronic uncertainties and its branching ratio would (along with a measurement of the CP asymmetry in {dollar}B\sbsp{lcub}d{rcub}{lcub}0{rcub}\to\psi K\sb{lcub}S{rcub}){dollar} allow a determination of all the elements of the CKM matrix (assuming all CP violation arises from the CKM matrix).;The first group of models of CP violation considered consists of three extensions of the Higgs …

Thermal Lattice Boltzmann Simulations Of Variable Prandtl Number Turbulent Flow, Min Soe Jan 1997

Thermal Lattice Boltzmann Simulations Of Variable Prandtl Number Turbulent Flow, Min Soe

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

With the advent of massively parallel processor machines, thermal lattice Boltzmann equation (TLBE) techniques offer an attractive way of handling turbulence simulations. TLBE is new form of DNS (direct numerical simulation method)--with the important advantages of being ideal for multi-parallel processors as well as being able to handle complicated geometries. Since there are many kinetic models that will reproduce the macroscopic nonlinear (compressible) transport equations, TLBE chooses that subset which can be readily solved on a discrete spatial lattice. The lattice geometry must be so chosen that the discrete phase representation of TLBE will not taint the rotational symmetric continuum …

On-Line System Identification For Control System Applications In Particle Accelerators, Mahesh Chowdhary

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Particle accelerators require a number of feedback systems in order to stabilize a variety of parameters. The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility presents a unique set of control and identification problems. This accelerator produces a continuous electron beam with energies between 0.5 and 4.0 GeV to be delivered to the experimental halls. In order to meet stringent beam quality requirements specified by the experimental halls, the position and the energy of the electron beam needs to stabilized at various locations in the accelerator.;A number of noise measurement tests were conducted at various locations in the …

Propagation Of Rayleigh Waves In Thin Films, Agus A. Ananda Jan 1997

Propagation Of Rayleigh Waves In Thin Films, Agus A. Ananda

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

With the advent of thin film technology and more recently its applications in microelectronics and control of surface properties, the interest in mechanical properties of thin films has grown tremendously. Mechanical defects such as creep, fracture and adhesion loss, play a very important role in physical instabilities of thin film materials. An acoustic microscope has been built to study mechanical properties of thin-films. The microscope operates at a nominal frequency of 50 MHz. Rayleigh surface waves velocities on the surface of film-substrate systems were measured from V(z) curves generated by the acoustic microscope. V(z) curves are produced from interference between …

Semiclassical Model Of Λ-Doublet States In Diatomic Molecules, Laurie J. Kovalenko, John B. Delos Jan 1997

Semiclassical Model Of Λ-Doublet States In Diatomic Molecules, Laurie J. Kovalenko, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

An intuitive picture of Λ-doubling in diatomic molecules is presented using a semiclassical theory. A common view of Λ-doubling as arising from electrons “lagging” behind the rotating internuclear axis is shown to be misleading; rather, the eigenfunctions are symmetric about the molecular axes and can be expressed as a superposition of pure nonrotating orbitals and travelling waves. These results are shown to be consistent with a full quantum treatment. We also examine, for the first time, time-dependent states, by monitoring expectation values of electronic- and nuclear-angular momenta. For low rotation frequency, the expectation value of the electronic-angular momentum locks onto …

Four-Wave Mixing And Optical Phase Conjugation In Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Devices, Gregory J. Vansuch Jan 1997

Four-Wave Mixing And Optical Phase Conjugation In Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Devices, Gregory J. Vansuch

Theses and Dissertations

Four-wave mixing (FWM), a nonlinear optical process, was investigated in resonant cavity light emitting diodes (RCLEDs) and vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) below lasing threshold. These semiconductor photonic devices consisted of an optical gain region of quantum wells sandwiched between two distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirrors. Pump and probe lasers were injected into the devices to generate FWM. The dependence of FWM on bias current, pump laser power, and spectral and spatial separation between pump and probe lasers was investigated experimentally. A computer model of FWM based on the wave and carrier density equations was developed and agreed well …

Damped Diocotron Quasi-Modes Of Non-Neutral Plasmas And Inviscid Fluids, S. Neil Rasband, Ross L. Spencer Jan 1997

Damped Diocotron Quasi-Modes Of Non-Neutral Plasmas And Inviscid Fluids, S. Neil Rasband, Ross L. Spencer

Faculty Publications

Computations of damped diocotron oscillations (quasi-modes) are described for non-neutral plasmas and inviscid fluids. The numerical method implements a suggestion made by Briggs, Daugherty, and Levy some 25 years ago [Phys. Fluids 13, 421 (1970)] to push the branch line that forms the continuum into the complex w-plane by solving the mode equation in the complex r-plane. For the special case of power-law density profiles the calculation finds the same quasi-mode frequencies found recently by Corngold [Phys. Plasmas 2, 620 (1995)]. It is found that the feature of the continuum eigenfunctions which indicates the presence of a nearby quasi-mode is …

The Effect Of Three-Dimensional Freestream Disturbances On The Supersonic Flow Past A Wedge, Peter W. Duck, D. Glenn Lasseigne, M. Y. Hussaini

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The interaction between a shock wave (attached to a wedge) and small amplitude, three-dimensional disturbances of a uniform, supersonic, freestream flow are investigated. The paper extends the two-dimensional study of Duck et al. [P W. Duck, D. G. Lasseigne, and M. Y. Hussaini, ''On the interaction between the shock wave attached to a wedge and freestream disturbances,'' Theor. Comput. Fluid Dyn. 7, 119 (1995) (also ICASE Report No. 93-61)] through the use of vector potentials, which render the problem tractable by the same techniques as in the two-dimensional case, in particular by expansion of the solution by means of …

Matching Numerical Simulations To Continuum Field Theories: A Lattice Renormalization Study, J Borrill, M. Gleiser Jan 1997

Matching Numerical Simulations To Continuum Field Theories: A Lattice Renormalization Study, J Borrill, M. Gleiser

Dartmouth Scholarship

The study of nonlinear phenomena in systems with many degrees of freedom often relies on complex numerical simulations. In trying to model realistic situations, these systems may be coupled to an external environment which drives their dynamics. For nonlinear field theories coupled to thermal (or quantum) baths, discrete lattice formulations must be dealt with extreme care if the results of the simulations are to be interpreted in the continuum limit. Using techniques from renormalization theory, a self-consistent method is presented to match lattice results to continuum models. As an application, symmetry restoration in ϕ4 models is investigated.

Semiclassical Approach To The Hydrogen-Exchange Reaction Reactive And Transition-State Dynamics, Sophya V. Garashchuk, F. Grossmann, D. Tannor Jan 1997

Semiclassical Approach To The Hydrogen-Exchange Reaction Reactive And Transition-State Dynamics, Sophya V. Garashchuk, F. Grossmann, D. Tannor

Faculty Publications

Scattering matrix elements and symmetric transition-state resonances for the collinear H 2 + H → H + H 2 reaction are obtained using a time-dependent approach. The correlation function between reactant channel wavepackets and product channel wavepackets is used to determine the S-matrix elements. In a similar fashion, autocorrelation functions are used to extract the positions and widths of transition-state resonances. The time propagation of the wavepackets is performed by the improved semiclassical frozen Gaussian method of Herman and Kluk, which is an initial value, uniformly converged method. The agreement between the quantum and semiclassical results is far better …

The direct transformation of the energy of an incident high-energy photon into a measurable potential difference within an absorbing metal is investigated. Experimental evidence is presented that the effect arises from the inherent energy dependence of the electronic density of states, rather than from a simple temperature excursion. The similarities between the results on Al and YBa2Cu3O7 samples indicate that the effect is universal in nature. We assert it may be used as the basis of a fast, energy resolving, individual photon detector for the ultraviolet radiation and x-rays.

Coplanarity Test For Selecting A Pair Of Charged-Particle Tracks Resulting From A Single Neutral-Particle Decay, Edwin S. Braithwaite, Wilfred J. Braithwaite Jan 1997

Coplanarity Test For Selecting A Pair Of Charged-Particle Tracks Resulting From A Single Neutral-Particle Decay, Edwin S. Braithwaite, Wilfred J. Braithwaite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

It is hard to determine directly the position of a neutral subatomic particle, but when such a particle decays into a pair of charged particles, it is easy to determine the positions of the charged decay particles and thereby infer the position of the parent particle at the time of its decay. A minimum of two coordinate points for each of the two decay particles is needed to reconstruct the position of the parent vertex. The mathematics of the reconstruction process is inherently interesting, and it can be used to demonstrate to students the utility of some of the most …

Separating K+/- From Pi+/- Using In-Flight Decays To Mu+/- + Nu, Wilfred J. Braithwaite, Edwin S. Braithwaite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A method is presented for completely distinguishing between charged kaons and charged pions by using their charged muon (plus neutrino) decays (with neutrinos undetected) for meson laboratory momenta up to 1000 MeV/c. When either a charged kaon or a charged pion decays into a muon and a neutrino, momentum-energy (four-momentum) conservation will be used to provide unique "kinematic trajectories" for distinguishing kaon decays from pion decays when the change in three-momentum of the muon from that of either parent kaon or pion is measured (or simulated). Ina magnetic field, observation of a tracked particle showing a "kink" and/or a change …

Characterization Of Iron Oxides And Atmospheric Corrosion Of Steel, Sei Jin Oh Jan 1997

Characterization Of Iron Oxides And Atmospheric Corrosion Of Steel, Sei Jin Oh

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The study of corrosion behavior was performed using three different analytical techniques, which provided information on the formation, development and layering of iron oxides on the corrosion products as a function of atmospheric conditions, exposure time and type of steel. In particular, the protective layer formed on weathering steel was investigated as a function of different amounts of alloying elements in the steel, atmospheric conditions and exposure times. Combined together, the results provided a better understanding of the atmospheric corrosion behavior of steel, and formed a part of database of the atmospheric corrosion characteristics.

Accurate characterization of the iron oxides …

Using the ZEUS detector at the HERA electron-proton collider, we have searched for lepton flavor violation in ep collisions at a center-of-mass energy (√s) of 300 GeV. Events of the type e + p → ℓ + X with a final-state lepton of high transverse momentum, ℓ = μ or τ, were sought. No evidence was found for lepton flavor violation in the combined 1993 and 1994 data samples, for which the integrated luminosities were 0.84 pb-1 for e-p collisions and 2.94 pb-1 for e+p collisions. Limits on coupling vs. mass are provided for leptoquarks and R-parity violating squarks. For …

Microstructural Characterization Of An Ultra-High-Performance Polyimide, April Heather Baugher Jan 1997

Microstructural Characterization Of An Ultra-High-Performance Polyimide, April Heather Baugher

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The motivation for this study was to further characterize a relatively new high-temperature polymer for application as a matrix resin for carbon fiber composites. The two primary questions addressed in this study dealt with the structural and chemical changes occurring in these polymers on exposure to high temperature.;To investigate the structural changes in the heat-treated samples, a positron annihilation lifetime spectrometer was designed, built and optimized. Because the lifetime of a positron in a material reflects the electronic structure of the material in which it annihilates, measurements by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy can be used to investigate changes in a …

Radiation-Induced Luminescence In Terbium-Doped Silicate Glasses, Michael Stuart West Jan 1997

Radiation-Induced Luminescence In Terbium-Doped Silicate Glasses, Michael Stuart West

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study is to characterize radiation-induced luminescence of terbium-doped silicate glasses. Experiments performed investigated the optical properties, isothermal time-evolution, and temperature dependence of the radiation-induced luminescence of two commercially available terbium-doped glasses. A problem common to this type of glass is the persistent luminescence, or afterglow, that occurs following the end of excitation from an external source of radiation. While the processes that govern characteristic luminescence of rare earth ions, including terbium, are well understood, the processes that give rise to afterglow in doped glasses are not. Identifying the source of long-term luminescence is essential for controlling …

Synthesis Of Bulk, Polycrystalline Gallium Nitride At Low Pressures, Alberto Argoitia, John Angus, Cliff Hayman, Long Wang, Jeffrey Dyck, Kathleen Kash Dec 1996

Synthesis Of Bulk, Polycrystalline Gallium Nitride At Low Pressures, Alberto Argoitia, John Angus, Cliff Hayman, Long Wang, Jeffrey Dyck, Kathleen Kash

Jeffrey Dyck

Bulk, polycrytalline gallium nitride was crystallized from gallium saturated with nitrogen obtained from a microwave electron cyclotron resonance source. The polycrystalline samples are wurtzitic and n-type. Well-faceted crystals give near-band-edge and yellow band photo-luminescence at both 10K and 300K. The results show that atomic nitrogen is an attractive alternative to high pressure molecular nitrogen for saturation of gallium with nitrogen for synthesis of bulk gallium nitride.

Growth Of Bulk, Polycrystalline Gallium And Indium Nitride At Sub-Atmospheric Pressures, John Angus, Alberto Argoitia, Cliff Hayman, Long Wang, Jeffrey Dyck, Kathleen Kash

Jeffrey Dyck

Bulk polycrystalline gallium nitride and indium nitride were crystallized at sub-atmospheric pressures by saturating the pure metals with nitrogen from a microwave electron cyclotron resonance source. Saturation of Ga/In melts with nitrogen led only to the crystallization of gallium nitride. The polycrystralline samples were wurtzitic. The gallium nitride was well faceted, with narrow Raman lineshapes, and showed near-band-edge and yellow band photo-luminescence at both 4K and 300K. The indium nitirde was formed in smaller amounts, was less well faceted, and showed no photoluminescence.
