The Pauli-Weisskopf theory of electromagnetic production of pion pairs has been a subject of interest in various connections for many years. Recently new interest has been stimulated in the theory because pion pair production is a possible means of investigating the - interaction. This approach, which was originally suggested by Pomeranchuk, is particularly valid in view of the increase in the cross section, when the strong pion-nucleus interaction is included, over that obtained by the original theory. The purpose of this thesis is to determine how the muon component of an extensive air shower varies with the energy of the incident primary particle and different values of inelasticity and multiplicity for the nuclear interactions according to a simple theory of extensive air showers suggested by Professor Roy Thomas of the University of New Mexico. The search for an anisotrophy in the penetrating component of the cosmic-ray flux is usually carried out with narrow-angle directionally sensitive detectors located near the surface of the earth. Directional sensitivity is achieved by using a cosmic-ray telescope, consisting of Geiger counters or of scintillation counters, in a coincidence arrangement. Thus a solid angle of acceptance for the cosmic-ray particles is defined.

In Chapter I, the statement of the problem considered in this dissertation is given: the investigation of the existence of the pseudo­ scalar interaction by the formulation of the theoretical expressions for the beta longitudinal polarization and the beta spectrum in 0 --> 0 (yes) beta transitions and by a comparison of the existing experimental data with the developed theory.

In Chapter II, we explain the reasons for the incorrectness of the conventional treatment of the pseudoscalar interaction, and then give the correct form of the operator for this interaction.

Extensive air showers have been studied as part of cosmic ray phenomenology since 1938. They are made up of electrons, photons, and many other particles which traverse the earth's atmosphere toward the earth. The showers are initiated by high energy cosmic rays. The primary cosmic rays are nuclei which have been stripped of their orbital electrons.

To this end an experiment is underway in the University of New Mexico Physics Department to determine the amount of energy transferred from the core of the shower to the electron-photon cascade. By using a detector telescope with appropriate absorber between the two detectors, …

An Investigation Of The Effect Of High Temperature On The Schumann-Runge Ultraviolet Absorption Continuum Of Oxygen, John Stanton Evans

A theoretical and experimental investigation of the absorption coefficient of molecular oxygen at high temperature is reported here. The wavelength range covered is in the vacuum ultraviolet region from 1300 A to 1740 A. The theoretical treatment covers all temperatures from 300° to 10,000° K. The experimental investigation was carried out in the temperature range of 4,000° to 10,000° K. All values of the absorption coefficient found apply only to oxygen for which the vibrational degree of freedom is fully excited.

A magnetic monopole may be detected by its deflection in an electric field or by the character of the ionization it produces. The electric deflection experiment may be performed in a helium bubble chamber where helical (or spiral) tracks whose axes are parallel to the D-lines would be certain evidence for the discovery of the monopole. Previous studies of the ionization have emphasized that the Bragg tail would be missing from a monopole track, as compared to a charged particle. A hardness tester, especially adapted for grain, was constructed by modifying a commercial portable soft metal tester known as the Barcol Impressor. A preloaded stylus is forced into grain sections prepared by means of a microtome. The displacement of the stylus, measured by a dial micrometer, is used as a hardness index. This has been related to the Vickers diamond pyramid hardness which is a standard metallurgical test. A number of hardness measurements may be made on a single transverse kernel section. The first of these has immediate application to analysis of air shower data which is presently being gathered by two large scintillation tanks located immediately behind the University of New Mexico physics building. A Study Of The Radioactive Decay Of The Two Isomers Of Pd109 And Of The Associated Low-Lying Levels Of Ag109, John W. Starner

The radiations of Pd109 (13.45 ± 0.01 hr) and Pd109m(4.69 ± 0.01 min) have been investigated with a coincidence scintillation spectrometer and a solenoidal beta-ray spectrometer. Pd109m was observed to have only one mode of decay: a 188-kev (E3) isomeric transition to Pd109. The principal beta-ray group (>99.9%) of Pd109 was found to have an end-point energy of 1.025 ± 0.005 Mev. Gamma rays of the following energies (kev) and approximate intensities (photons/105 disintegrations) were observed to acccmpany the decay of Pd109: 773 (4), 707 (2), 643 (10), 602 …

The problem with which this investigation is concerned was to construct suitable apparatus to measure accurately the shape and the duration of a pulse of δ-radiation of approximately 10 Mev energy and 20 mμ sec duration. In particular, the shape of the tail of the pulse had to be determined as accurately as possible, so that millimicrosecond half lives can be measured accurately with the betatron.

"A theoretical expression for a cell-center distribution function was developed using a fundamental statistical mechanics approach. A free volume picture of the liquid was used with each atom located in a spherical cell formed by its nearest neighbors. Cell-center density distribution curves were obtained for liquid argon for temperatures of 84.4°K, 91.8°K, 126.7°K, 144.1°K, and 149.3°K and for argon gas at 149.3°K, and a comparison made with the experimental atomic distribution curves obtained by Eisenstein. For the first two temperatures a sharper, more definite structure was predicted by the cell model. For the remaining four temperatures, with the assumptions made, …
