Interceptor Drains And Waterlogging Control, J W. Cox, T R. Negus
Interceptor Drains And Waterlogging Control, J W. Cox, T R. Negus
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Department of Agriculture trials of seepage interceptor drains from 1972 to 1983 primarily assessed the effects of such drains on salt encroachment. Although these trials showed that the drains had little influence on salt storage within the topsoil, they did reduce waterlogging downslope.
To investigate this drainage effect further, the Department's Narrogin office surveyed 35 drains on 14 properties in the winter of 1981, followed by detailed crop measurements in December that year. Provided the drains were properly designed, surveyed and constructed, and well maintained, they could be expected to increase crop yields during a waterlogging year by about 1 …

The Tolerance Of Cereals To Herbicides., D. G. Bowran
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Herbicides affect not only the weeds present in a crop, but also the crop itself. In the absence of weeds, both positive and negative responses to herbicides have been reported in the literature. The negative responses are the most important, especially if yield is decreased below the economic threshold for herbicide use. Factors which are important in determining the level of crop response to a herbicide include the crop species and variety, the timing of the herbicide, the rate of herbicide and the environmental conditions under which the crop is growing.

A soil survey of 38 sites in barley growing areas of Western Australia was carried out in 1984. It was found that 53% of topsoils surveyed had a pH less than 5.5, acid enough to suspect barley yields might be affected. In 1985 an extensive field trial proqramme was established at 9 sites. The sites were selected from the 1984 survey and they varied in their level of acidity from mild to severe. 85NA, 85NA2, 85NA5, 85NA4, 85NA3, 85KA3, 85KA4, 85KA5, 85KA6, 83N046,

The Taarblin Experience : A Planned Approach To Soil Conservation, Greg Astbury, Owner/Manager Of Taarblin, Tim Negus
Bulletins 4000 -
Many farms in Western Australia were cleared and developed before there was a full and clear understanding of the effects of bush clearing - that is salinization of soil and water supplies, wind and water erosion, waterlogging and soil structure decline. The productive capacity and inherent problems of the different soil types was also largely unknown.
Modern-day Conservation Farm Planning aims to provide a blue-print for the redevelopment of properties to ensure long term soil fertility, to prevent soil erosion and degradation by waterlogging and salinity. It also provides for a spread of reliable stock watering points and more efficient …
Benthic Diatom Community Dynamics In The Colorado River: Interactive Effects Of Periodic Dessication And Current Regime, Christopher Gerard Peterson
Benthic Diatom Community Dynamics In The Colorado River: Interactive Effects Of Periodic Dessication And Current Regime, Christopher Gerard Peterson
Publications (WR)
The response to periodic desiccation of periphyton communities developed in eddy environments or in areas exposed to variable, direct current was examined. Algal communities were incubated on clay tiles for between 2 and 12 weeks in the Colorado River, directly below Hoover Dam from October, 1983 - January, 1984. Mean daily discharge from the dam decreased over this period. To assess the influence of these discharge changes on community dynamics, samples collected over the first 12 weeks of the investigation were compared to samples of the same age collected over the final 8 weeks.
The small diatom taxon Achnahthes spp …

The 1984 experimental programme was a continuation of that started in 1981. The programme was aimed at evaluating the major herbicides in current use for cereals as well as new herbicides against the recommended varieties at three main sites, these being Wongan Hills, Merredin and Mt Barker. In addition Stage 4 breeding lines were evaluated against the same herbicides but only at Wongan Hills. The herbicides used and their rates and time of application are presented in Table 1. Herbicides were applied at both the recommended and twice the recommended rates of application, except in the breeding line trial where …
