COMMENTS 1. No insect problems experienced and broadleaf weeds effectively controlled by spraying. Septoria· leaf spot incidence insufficient to affect yields. 2. Little effect of time of planting on either total dry matter or grain yield. Crop received about 70% of the average May-October rainfall with a very dry September-October. Perhaps the distribution of rainfall allowed a similar pattern of water use, and total water use by each planting time. 3. There is probably a significant effect of Nitrogen regime on grain yield. Osmocote (N3) consistently yielded more than either single (N1) or repeated (N2) dressings of Agran 34:0. The …

Leaching Of An Acetanilide Herbicide, Cp55097 In Soil Columns, Regina K. Higgins Jan 1979

Leaching Of An Acetanilide Herbicide, Cp55097 In Soil Columns, Regina K. Higgins

Masters Theses

The leachability of the acetanilide herbicide, CP55097 was determined using a soil column system. This herbicide, which is used as a preemergent against certain grasses and broadleaf weeds, was leached through four different soils (sandy clay, sandy loam, sandy clay loam and clay loam) using the following procedure. Plastic columns consisting of 8 rings (2 in. dia. x 1 in.) were assembled and their bottoms covered with cheesecloth. They were then filled with soil and prewetted with water to attain field capacity. Herbicide concentrations equalling 0, 1, 3, 6 lb/A were pipetted onto the soil surface and 0, 1, 2, …

Cereal, Pasture Legume And Water Supply Prospects At Forrestania : Results Of Experimental Work East Of Hyden, Western Australia, T E. Mcdowell, M G. Mason, J W. Gartrell, William J. Toms, I A F Laing Jan 1979

Cereal, Pasture Legume And Water Supply Prospects At Forrestania : Results Of Experimental Work East Of Hyden, Western Australia, T E. Mcdowell, M G. Mason, J W. Gartrell, William J. Toms, I A F Laing

Technical Bulletins

The agricultural potential of the Forrestania area appears at least equal to that of much of the settled eastern wheatbelt. The scrubplain soils of the Forrestania area have an average yield potential of at least 1 000 kg/ha wheat and carrying capacity of 1.8 to 3.7 sheep per hectare on improved pastures. The use of clover ley rotations would maintain these levels of potential yield. Partial crop failures caused by adverse seasonal conditions could be expected 10 years in every 100.

Lichenometric Distribution Of Rhizocarpon Geographicum On Mt. Washington: A Relative Dating Tool., Paul Andrew Mayewski, Peter A. Jeschke

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Excerpt from summary, p. 83: In addition to marking the distribution of snowpatches and the relative age of patterned ground features, local departures from the regional lichenometric trend may also be used to define and relatively date: changes in the distribution of soils and vegetation, avalanche deposits, and abrasion of hiking trails. Lichenometric studies will be undertaken in the following year to date more precisely features and events on Mount Washington.

Plant Succession Studies On Subalpine Acid Mine Spoils In The Beartooth Mountains, Patricia Lea Howard May 1978

Plant Succession Studies On Subalpine Acid Mine Spoils In The Beartooth Mountains, Patricia Lea Howard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Large areas within alpine and subalpine tundra have been by disturbed by mining during this century. The most promising method for retarding deterioration of these areas is revegetation with native species through both seeding and transplants. One natural process of revegetation which occurs on portions of many existing disturbances seems to be the establishment of a few species that expand with time to form matts of plants.

At the McLaren Mine, located at 3000 m elevation in the Beartooth Mountains, Montana, active succession is occurring and is dominated by Carex species. Seed viability and successional patterns studies were conducted on …

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project Environmental Impact Statement: Appendix F: Terrestrial Ecosystem Analysis (Supplement), New England Division, United States Army Engineer Division

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

Construction of the proposed Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project in Aroostook County, Maine will result in the isolation of an area of land due to the impoundment behind Dickey Dam. This land area is located between the United States - Canadian border, the Little Black River, the impoundment (elevation = 913 feet), the Big Black River, and the Shields Branch of the Big Black River, and comprises 183,768 acres of land. A previous report (ERT, 1977) determined the forest types within two miles of the impoundment but did not extend to the Canadian border. This report addresses the forest types

Soil And Plant Analysis : A Guide To Fertilizer Usage, Walter Jacob Cox Jan 1978

Soil And Plant Analysis : A Guide To Fertilizer Usage, Walter Jacob Cox

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Soil and plant analysis can be used to identify problems in soils, diagnose nutrient deficiencies and as a guide to fertiliser usage.

Soil testing is particularily useful where large amounts of phosphorus and potassium are leached or removed from the paddock in hay or silage.

Actual rates of fertiliser can only be recommended from soil testing and only in conjunction with additional biological and economic information.

Producing 20-Month Old Beef Steers Off Annual Pasture, K D. Greathead, D. J. Barker, W. J. Ryan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A recent Mt Barker experiment compared two systems of fodder conservation with continuous grazing, using two types of steers, at three stocking rates. Year-round performance, carcass composition, and resulting costs and returns per hectare were assessed.

Production per hectare was greatest from crossbred steers at the intermediate stocking rate with either type of fodder conservation.

Potassium Deficiency In Lupins : Identification, Rates, Times And Method Of Application, Walter Jacob Cox Jan 1978

Potassium Deficiency In Lupins : Identification, Rates, Times And Method Of Application, Walter Jacob Cox

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Large areas of sandplain soils north of Perth are low in potassium levels, and responses to applied potassium have been large for both sub. clover and grain lupins.

This article indicates where potassium might be needed, and how to diagnose and overcome deficiencies in lupins.

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Seed yields of early maturing subterranean clovers. A brief description of weather conditions in 1977, site details and results of germination counts and growth ratings were included in the Summary Report for 1977. Drill-sown trials - Seed yields from the trials varied from good in the southern wheatbelt to very poor in the northern areas. Test samples were taken from trials 77GE32, 77GE40 and 77GE41 in the Pindar and Tardun districts, 77ME22 at Koorda and 77TS25 at Perenjori but the quantity of seed did not warrant yield assessment. Trial 77M022 at Gabalong was not sampled. Seed yields from the rest …
