Red Rock Desert Learning Center & Wild Horse And Burro Facility: Oliver Ranch Feasibility Study, Yosemite National Institutes

Oliver Ranch Project

Yosemite National Institutes, a private, non-profit national environmental education leader, has been running successful residential science programs in national parks for 30 years in partnership with the National Park Service. The mission of YNI is to provide educational adventures in nature's classroom to inspire a personal connection to the natural world and responsible actions to sustain it. Early in 2000 in Las Vegas, a new organization, the Outside Las Vegas Foundation (OLVF), was forming. The OLVF is dedicated to preserving the federal public lands surrounding Las Vegas, enriching the experience of its visitors, enhancing the quality of life for local …

Portfolio Assessment In Liberal Arts Mathematics, Mike Kenyon Jun 2002

Portfolio Assessment In Liberal Arts Mathematics, Mike Kenyon

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

This paper describes my efforts to incorporate problem-solving portfolios into my liberal arts mathematics course. I begin with a description of the components of the portfolios and the factors I consider in evaluating them. I then address some of the more significant obstacles I have encountered as well as what I consider to be among the major benefits. A selection from one student’s portfolio is appended.

Creating Successful Calculus Writing Assignments, Kris H. Green Jun 2002

Creating Successful Calculus Writing Assignments, Kris H. Green

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Faculty/Staff Publications

I discuss three different writing assignments that I have used in my calculus courses. These assignments are introduced with a discussion of purpose and audience. Defining these qualities of an assignment will ensure that your writing assignments are more successful. The assignments discussed and explored here represent three different purposes: personal, informational and a blend of the two. The audiences for these assignments are diverse and force the students to incorporate particular modes of writing that demonstrate much of their thinking. Assessment of student learning as a result of these assignments is discussed. A fourth writing assignment is developed from …

The Science Studio – A Workshop Approach To Introductory Physical Science, S. R. Chaudhury Jan 2002

The Science Studio – A Workshop Approach To Introductory Physical Science, S. R. Chaudhury

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This paper describes the Science Studio, an innovative workshop approach for instruction in a physical science course that combines aspects of traditional lecture and laboratory. The target audience for this introductory course is non-science majors, including prospective teachers. An inquiry-based, technology-rich learning environment has been created to allow students hands-on, in-depth exploration of topics in physics, and earth and space science. Course philosophy, course development, and sample activities are described in this paper, along with outcomes from a project-wide evaluation of the Virginia Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (VCEPT), an investigation of change in student attitudes and …
