Students And Their Learning From Reading, Chris Fenwick May 2001

Students And Their Learning From Reading, Chris Fenwick

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

My aim in this article is to summarize work I have done over the last three years, focusing on the issue of helping students learn from whatever mathematics text they read. Although these types of texts generally contain 3 modes of communication, namely technical English, the language of mathematics itself and diagrams, I will focus this article only on the technical English of such texts. The idea, then, that students can develop techniques and strategies for learning from what they read is generally known as “reading to learn.”

Using Manipulatives In Undergraduate Mathematics Courses, D. Moore

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Students in undergraduate mathematics classes not only benefit from the use of manipulatives in the classroom, but also enjoy them. This paper specifically outlines one successful activity that used manipulatives in a large section of a precalculus course and then explores possibilities in other courses. It also addresses the use of mathematics manipulatives as a platform to introduce both active and cooperative learning in a large lecture setting.

The Transition To College Process In Pr-Cetp Scholars, E. Rivera, M. Rosa, A. Santiago, N. Torres, M. Bravo

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This article describes a study about the experiences of a group of students during the transition from high school to college. The students are future teachers who evidenced a high level of academic achievement in high school and received merit scholarships from the Puerto Rico Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (PR-CETP). Two groups of students were compared: those who sustained a high GPA during their freshman year, and those who did not and, therefore, no longer qualified for the scholarship. The study was carried out through focused interviews with eight students, from three universities, four of whom maintained the …

An Innovative University Course For Cooperating Teachers, M. Aguirre Ortiz, L. Gaspar Jan 2001

An Innovative University Course For Cooperating Teachers, M. Aguirre Ortiz, L. Gaspar

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The transformation of a course for certifying cooperating teachers in Puerto Rico is described. The course was transformed to strengthen the teaching of science and mathematics and to make the course more congruent with the educational principles of constructivism promoted by the CETP projects at the national level, including Puerto Rico. The 45-hour requirement was distributed over nine days. The Open Space strategy was modified to include multiple active teaching-learning and assessment techniques, which promoted a learning environment based on trust, dedication, and the commitment of all participants to learn and help each other learn. Even more relevant was the …

Application Of Biotechnology To Solve Relevant Biological Problems Promotes Understanding Of Underlying Concepts, P. A. Burrowes, G. M. Nazario Jan 2001

Application Of Biotechnology To Solve Relevant Biological Problems Promotes Understanding Of Underlying Concepts, P. A. Burrowes, G. M. Nazario

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Although some efforts have been made to modify the curriculum of the Introductory Biology laboratories from a passive to a more experimental form, the use of modern biotechnology had not been implemented at our institution. The need to understand the applications of modern technology to real-life situations seems imperative at the turn of the century [1,2]. Because several studies have shown that the study of biotechnology by itself does not increase conceptual understanding, the objective of this research was to determine if the use of biotechnology to solve relevant biological problems increased conceptual understanding among our students. We designed two …

Educational Research Abstracts, G. Bass Jr. Jan 2001

Educational Research Abstracts, G. Bass Jr.

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Editors' Note: As noted in previous issues of the Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations, the purpose of this Educational Research Abstract section is to present current research on issues relevant to math and science teaching at both the K-12 and college levels. Because educational research studies are published in so many different academic journals and presented as so many different professional conferences, it is a rare public school teacher or college professor who is familiar with the range of recent reposts on a particular instructional technique or curricular advancement. Indeed, the uniqueness of various pedagogical strategies has been …

Lessons From An Inventory Of The Ames, Iowa, Flora (1859-2000), William R. Norris, Deborah Q. Lewis, Mark P. Widrlechner, Jimmie D. Thompson, Richard O. Pope

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A botanical survey of the vascular flora of the "planning and zoning jurisdiction" of the city of Ames, Iowa (i.e., the area within a boundary 3.2 km beyond the current city limits) was compiled from 1990 to 2000. During this survey, 916 taxa (71 % native) were encountered within chis boundary. Literature reviews and a survey of Iowa State University's Ada Hayden Herbarium for specimens that had been collected in Ames since 1859 add 204 taxa to the flora. This total of 1,120 taxa exceeds the number of taxa known from any comparable area (including counties) in Iowa. We produced …

Tests Of A Rotenone-Impregnated Bait For Controlling Common Carp, Joseph L. Bonneau, Dennis L. Scarnecchia Jan 2001

Tests Of A Rotenone-Impregnated Bait For Controlling Common Carp, Joseph L. Bonneau, Dennis L. Scarnecchia

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

An experimental rotenone-impregnated pelleted (approximately 10 mg/pellet) bait was tested in force-feeding and field-feeding experiments as a method of control for common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Mortality rates of force-fed fish ranged from less than 40% when fed one pellet to 100% when fed more than 10 pellets. Mortality occurred within 48 h. Mortality rates of control fish did not exceed 10%. In reservoir feeding trials in 1994 and 1995, carp were fed for 2-3 weeks on a non-toxic, vegetable-based bait dispensed by automatic feeders, followed by one feeding of the bait with rotenone added. Carp ceased feeding on the rotenone …

A three-crop strip-intercropping system of corn, soybean and oat interseeded with nondormant alfalfa was established to determine the effect of tillage system and row position on soil water content and grain yield in the soybean strip. The experiment was a split-plot design with three tillage treatments (conventional, CT; reduced, RT; and minimum tillage, MT) as main plot effects and three row positions (both edge rows and the center …

Species Specific Odds Of Occurrence Of Blackspot Among Fish From The Maple River In Western Iowa, John W. Mellen Jan 2001

Species Specific Odds Of Occurrence Of Blackspot Among Fish From The Maple River In Western Iowa, John W. Mellen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Odds ratio analysis was used to evaluate the relative likelihood of occurrence of blackspot (Neascus pyriformil, Chandler) infections among 14 species of fish collected from the Maple River in Buena Vista and Ida Counties in western Iowa. Prevalence estimates ranged from 0% to 47.4% with a mean prevalence of 11.9%. The rank ordering of odds ratios of infection allowed the species to be categorized as those with risks greater than, less than, and not different from average risk to infection within the Maple River sample. The species with the largest odds ratio was the bluntnose minnow, (Pimephales notatus) (odds ratio …
