This paper is for mathematicians who are curious about how topology is being used to prove computer programs correct. Those advanced parts have been limited to Sections III, V, and VI, and they are marked by a [clock symbol]. By contrast, sections II, IV, and VII are suitable as a companion to existing textbooks in a Computer Science course such as Organization of Programming Languages, the course CS 8 as described in Curriculum [1979]. In discussing our teaching, we may focus on content, what we want our students to learn, or on pedagogy, what we do to help them learn. These two topics are of course related. In particular, changes in pedagogy are often driven in part by changing priorities for what kinds of things we want students to learn. It is nonetheless convenient to address content and pedagogy separately. Pedagogy, certainly the less specific of the two, is the topic of my second paper. Reform of post-secondary mathematics education, particularly introductory calculus, is becoming commonplace across North America. Although there are many varieties of reform, most can be placed within the philosophical camp of social constructivism. According to this movement, mathematical knowledge is constructed in an interactive way through instructor-student and inter-student dialogue, rather than built in an axiomatic sense such as the "new math" of 20 years ago, or in the reductionistic, algorithmic sense dominant in secondary and introductory college mathematics. No one concerned about the teaching of college mathematics--and few mathematicians who are not concerned--can have missed the movement to reform teaching in the mathematical sciences at all levels. The teaching of any active branch of knowledge, like the church, is of course "reforming and ever to be reformed." Calls to modernize what we offer students are always with us. What is striking about the current reform movement is not only its momentum but the fact that it centers on pedagogy rather than on content. Gender Patterns In Science Course Enrollment And Course Drop Patterns In An Iowa Senior High School, Sandra L. Stephen, Elizabeth D. Riesz

In order to ascertain whether local patterns corresponded to the national trends, which show fewer female and minority students enrolling in and completing high school physical science courses, the Cedar Rapids Community School District studied the course enrollment and drop patterns of seniors in one of the District high schools. Male students predominated in physics and AP Chemistry, and the proportion of males in AP Physics was significantly greater than the proportion of females. The proportion of females in chemistry was significantly greater than their proportion in the senior class. Course dropping patterns revealed a statistically significant relationship between gender …

Paleokarst And Associated Mineralization At The Linwood Mine, Scott County Iowa, Paul L. Garvin

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Operations at the Linwood Mine in Scott County, Iowa, have exposed, on two working levels, extensive pre-Pennsylvanian paleokarst and associated sediment fillings and mineralization in Middle Devonian limestones. Cavities in Davenport-Spring Grove host rocks range up to 270 meters in length and are virtually all filled with fluviatile sediment. Cavities in Cedar Rapids host rocks, on average, are smaller and some are unfilled. Limestone dissolution was controlled by high-angle fractures with a wide variety of orientations and by bedding plane and stylolitic partings. Dissolutional features on both levels of the mine provide evidence for phreatic and vadose processes. Most of …

Survey Of Hematozoa And Intestinal Helminths Infecting Green-Winged Teal In Guthrie County, Iowa, Rick Klann, Bryan Hellyer

Five helminths and one sporozoan were recovered from 21 hunter-killed green-winged teal collected from Lakin Slough in Guthrie County, Iowa during October and November of 1991. The sporozoan, Leucocytozoon simondi, was identified in blood smears from all 21 teal. The helminths recovered from the alimentary tract included three trematodes, Cotylurus flabelliformis, Echinostoma trivolvis and Zygocotyle lunata; a hymenolepid tapeworm; and one acanthocephalan, Corynosoma constrictum. The ecological factors associated with infection by these parasites are discussed.

Inheritance And Number Of Genes Affecting Quantitative Traits Within F2 Maize Populations, D. H. Schmidt, A. R. Hallauer

Populations derived from crosses of elite genotypes are commonly used in plant breeding programs. Knowledge of the genetic variation among individuals and their progenies within F2 populations is essential for effective selection of important traits. The genetic variation and number of effective factors affecting the expression of quantitative traits within 30 F2 maize (Zea mays L.) populations were determined by different methods suggested for study of F2 populations. Estimates of heritability and number of effective factors varied among F2 populations for each trait, primarily because of the differences in trait expression between parents of crosses and the environmental effects upon …
