Floristic Composition And Conservation Status Of Fens In Iowa, John A. Pearson, Mark J. Leoschke
Floristic Composition And Conservation Status Of Fens In Iowa, John A. Pearson, Mark J. Leoschke
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Over 200 extant fens of varying condition were documented during an extensive inventory conducted in Iowa between 1986 and 1991. Approximately half of the extant fens support endangered, threatened, special concern, or other rare plant species. Approximately 25 fens are outstanding conservation prospects with intact vegetation, high species richness, and rare species. Nearly 40% of all potential fen sites have been destroyed by cultivation or damage; another 30% remain unknown due to lack of a field visit, but most appear on aerial photographs to be very small, disturbed fragments. In addition to their traditionally recognized range in northwest Iowa, fens …

Charles Rueben Keyes And The History Of Iowa Archaeology, William Green
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Charles Reuben Keyes (1871-1951) achieved recognition during his lifetime as the "founding father" of Iowa archaeology, and later assessments confirmed and reemphasized Keyes' stature as Iowa's pioneer archaeologist. The collections and documents Keyes compiled, his interpretive publications, and the records of field work he coordinated have proven more valuable to Midwest and Plains archaeology every year. This article emphasizes Keyes' involvement in the development of professionalism in American archaeology and Iowa’s position in the growth of the discipline from 1920 to 1950. Keyes' contacts with the principal archaeologists of his era ensured Iowa’s involvement in the development of survey methods …

The Americans With Disabilities Act Of 1990: Implications For The Manning, Operation And Construction Of U.S. Commercial Vessels, Steven M. Stancliff
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 adds a new dimension to the body of anti discrimination law in the United States. Encompassing nearly all aspects of employment and public life, it has sent a shock wave of concern throughout the commercial vessels industry. Through examination of the Act's salient features and potential application to commercial vessel operation, manning, and construction, it is concluded that the Act's goals may be substantially achieved without additional risk or significant financial harm to shipowners. The requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 are not considered to be inconsistent with a shipowner's …

The Safe Drinking Water And Clean Water Acts: A Small Community View, Steve Levy
The Safe Drinking Water And Clean Water Acts: A Small Community View, Steve Levy
Maine Policy Review
The Safe Drinking Water Act of 1986 and the Clean Water Act Amendments of 1991 present significant financial and technical challenges to municipalities in Maine and other states as they struggle to meet compliance standards. Steve Levy, executive director of the Maine Rural Water Association, offers a view of the effects of these requirements on rural communities.

The Energy Crisis: The Case Of The Economic Community Of West African States (Ecowas), With Special Reference To Nigeria, Ghana And Burkina Faso, Francis Bliss Lagbo
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The energy crisis of West African countries has assumed major importance over the past few decades. The oil price increases of the 1970s have posed innumerable problems to these countries. But that is hardly the entire story. The vegetation cover of most places have been stripped so bare that people must walk for hours to find the day's supply of firewood, the traditional energy source. Doing something about the problem involves, first of all, understanding what the situation really is. This study provides an analysis of the spatial, sectoral and social inequalities in energy production and consumption in BCOWAS. Scrutiny …

Mass Dependent Loss Of Resolution In Radially Inhomogeneous Exb Ion Traps, Mark A. Capron, Susan S. Haskin, Curtiss D. Hanson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
ExB ion traps, such as Fourier transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance mass spectrometers (FY:ICR), mass analyze sample ions based on differences in their cyclotron frequencies in a homogeneous magnetic field. The high resolution mass measurements of FT-ICR are based on the relationship between the frequency of the cyclotron orbit and the mass-to-charge (m/q) ratio of an ion. Both the orbit and the frequency/mass relationship result from the radial forces on the ion. Ions trapped by inhomogeneous electric fields experience different magnitudes of the radial electric fields at different positions resulting in a positionally dependent frequency. Such differences in orbital frequencies for …

Adaptive Estimation In Timeseries Regression Models, Douglas Steigerwald
Adaptive Estimation In Timeseries Regression Models, Douglas Steigerwald
Douglas G. Steigerwald
I develop adaptive estimators for linear regression with serially correlated errors. The efficiency results hold even when the serial correlation structure is unknown. Simulations indicate that efficiency gains can be substantial with samples of only 50 observations. We apply the method to a study of forward exchange rates.

On The Finite Sample Behavior Of Adaptive Estimators, Douglas Steigerwald
Douglas G. Steigerwald
With only 50 observations, the adaptive estimator produces confidence intervals that are 20 to 50 percent shorter than those produced by GLS procedures. The key feature is that the underlying error density is symmetric. Under asymmetry the interval length is shortened by a smaller amount.

Specifying Interdatabase Dependencies In A Multidatabase Environment, Marek Rusinkiewicz, Amit P. Sheth, George Karabatis
Specifying Interdatabase Dependencies In A Multidatabase Environment, Marek Rusinkiewicz, Amit P. Sheth, George Karabatis
Kno.e.sis Publications
The problem of interdatabase dependencies and the effect they have on applications updating interdependent data are addressed. A model that allows specifications of constraints among multiple databases in a declarative fashion is proposed. The separation of the constraints from the application programs facilitates the maintenance of data constraints and allows flexibility in their implementation. It allows investigation of various mechanisms for enforcing the constraints, independently of the application programs. By grouping the constraints together, it is possible to check their completeness and discover possible contradictions among them. The concepts of polytransactions, which use interdatabase dependencies to generate a series of …
Binary Programming Models Of Spatial Pattern Recognition: Applications In Remote Sensing Image Analysis, Thomas G. Reed
Binary Programming Models Of Spatial Pattern Recognition: Applications In Remote Sensing Image Analysis, Thomas G. Reed
Theses and Dissertations
The major purpose of this investigation was to implement subregion allocation objectives using a network model base on an existing subregion allocation binary programming model (Benabdallah and Wright (B&W), 1990), the ultimate goal being the application of subregion allocation concepts towards the spatial analysis of satellite imagery. The multi-objective aspects of subregion allocation can be accomplished via a network formulation, a formulation vastly simpler in complexity than the binary programming models previously used. Without a network programming package that could maintain integral flows, however, deriving the solution was a tiresome task for the user. Nonetheless, several new concepts and advantages …
Structured Hypermedia Application Development Model (Shadm): A Structured Model For Technical Documentation Application Design, Peter W. Cassell
Structured Hypermedia Application Development Model (Shadm): A Structured Model For Technical Documentation Application Design, Peter W. Cassell
Theses and Dissertations
This research was conducted to determine how a Royal Australian Air Force technical maintenance publication could be transformed into a task oriented hypermedia application and to develop a model that could be used for future similar transformations. The model was developed following in-depth analysis of the existing USAF F-15E maintenance publication set and validation was conducted using a prototype developed in HyperWriter, a commercial hypermedia product. The prototype model was based around the performance of three maintenance tasks on an aircraft sub-subsystem and incorporated online user access to the necessary support data for task completion. Publication managers, producers, and users …

Recycling: Knowledge, Demographic & Motivational Factors Which Differentiate Behavior, David Ducoff
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study focuses on motivation -Involved in recycling behavior among residents of Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Knowledge of recycling and how it was acquired, and the variables of environmental concern, economic incentive and the peer pressure were compared so that behavior could be distinguished that separated recyclers from nonrecyclers. Talcott Parsons' work in action theory and George Homans' work in exchange theory provide the theoretical foundation for my study. The research was approached in a qualitatively based design with interviews of twenty area residents. Demographic factors of age, sex, religious affiliation, church attendance, education and income of respondents were solicited. In …
