Instream Flow Protection in the Western United States: A Practical Symposium (March 31-April 1)
Conference speakers included University of Colorado School of Law professors Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Charles F. Wilkinson.
Virtually all western states now provide some kind of legal recognition for instream flows. On March 31-April 1, the Natural Resources Law Center will present a symposium on the different approaches taken in these states, with emphasis on such major issues as the purposes for instream flows, the quantities of water needed for these purposes, enforcement of instream flow rights, federal instream flow claims, private instream flow claims, and transferring consumptive water rights to instream flow rights. Speakers include representatives from state agencies …

Storminess And High Tide Beach Change, Stanwell Park, Australia 1943-1978, Edward A. Bryant
Storminess And High Tide Beach Change, Stanwell Park, Australia 1943-1978, Edward A. Bryant
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Coastal storms have been considered significant agents in transporting sediment, modifying morphology and causing recent beach erosion. Along the New South Wales coast, the concomitance of storms, warmer sea surface temperatures and poleward movement of the Hadley cell was linked to beach erosion on Stanwell Park beach between 1943 and 1978. This result was defined using an accurately constructed compilation of coastal storms and a precisely measured time series of high tide positions taken from 105 oblique photographs. The two data sets are amongst the best of their kind in the world. Indices of storm magnitude, representing cumulative significant wave …

Zusammenfassung
Summary
1. Mongolian Toad, Bufo raddei, lives in pools and lagoons of rivers of Central Mongolia. The animals were captured there in dusk. …

Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese
Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Biotechnology is a diverse array of technologies which today are in various stages of evolution and development. To understand them and the potential application of these technologies to agriculture, it is helpful to consider them in a historical perspective. In addition, it is important to understand the interdependence of biotechnologies on traditional, well developed technologies. The commercial development of biotechnology is more difficult than imagined even as recently as five years ago. Also, the problems being addressed generally demand a much better understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the plant and animal systems under study. Nonetheless, there is a …

Australia—An Unstable Platform For Tide-Gauge Measurements Of Changing Sea Levels: A Discussion, Edward A. Bryant, P. S. Roy, B. G. Thom
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
The recent detailed analyses by Aubrey and Emery (1986) of Australian sea level trends continues their efforts to define tectonic and climatic factors worldwide that dominate long- and short-term fluctuations respectively in sea level records. These factors have included sediment and water loading on the adjacent shelf, the tectonic behaviour of plates, fluctuations in the Southern Oscillation, behaviour of currents impinging on the shelf, and river runoff. We do not object to these efforts; however we are disturbed by misrepresentations in their recent paper on Australian sea levels regarding (1) the interpretation of the nature of sea-level records, (2) the …
Sea-Level Variability And Its Impact Within The Greenhouse Scenario, Edward A. Bryant
Sea-Level Variability And Its Impact Within The Greenhouse Scenario, Edward A. Bryant
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
The greenhouse scenario assumes that sea level will rise worldwide at uniform rates because of near-polar ice melting or because of thermal expansion of ocean waters. This view ignores the natural variability of existing sea-level behaviour that occurs globally over time. It also ignores the fact that some of this variability is related to changes in climatic parameters such as precipitation, barometric pressure and temperature that will be influenced by the greenhouse effect. This paper presents existing evidence on sea-level variability across the globe and links it to changes in atmospheric pressure, air temperature and precipitation for the period 1933-1980. …
Predation By Ermine And Long-Tailed Weasels On Duck Eggs, Joseph P. Fleskes
Predation By Ermine And Long-Tailed Weasels On Duck Eggs, Joseph P. Fleskes
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Ermine (Mustela erminea) and long-tailed weasel (M. frenata) predation on duck eggs was studied at Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge, Kossuth County, Iowa, 1984-85. Captive individuals of both species ate 2-4 duck eggs at a rate of 0.5-2 eggs per trial day. All eggs were moved but some were not opened. One hole, ringed with small fragments and "bite-outs'', was made in all eggs opened by captive weasels. In the field, the appearance of opened eggs, the pattern of egg loss and the amount of nest bowl disturbance were used to determine the number of nests depreciated by weasels. Egg …
Biotechnology: A Dilemma For Land-Grant Institutions, A. David Kline
Biotechnology: A Dilemma For Land-Grant Institutions, A. David Kline
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
There is at least a prima facie moral tension between universities asserting land-grant principles and simultaneously sponsoring biotechnology. The core of the problem is the likely deleterious economic effects of biotechnology on rural communities -- the very constituency whose welfare is supposedly promoted by land-grant institutions. Considered are a number of responses to this tension including efforts to show that the tension is only apparent or that it can be eliminated through various public policies. It is argued that these "solutions" fail.
The upshot is that if the land-grant label is to be taken seriously, those institutions should begin allocating …
