A Comparative Study Of Discomfort Experienced By Surgical Patients On Three Selected Postoperative Days, Lillian Barker Bartlett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive survey was conducted to compare the discomfort experienced on three selected postoperative days to determine if there is one day identified by the patient as the most uncomfortable and to assess the symptoms of which he might complain. A checklist of twelve symptoms common to postsurgical patients was administered on the evenings of the second, third and fourth postoperative days by the researcher. Findings indicated that nineteen or 56 per cent of the thirty-four patients interviewed stated that the second day was most uncomfortable, nine or 27 per cent the third and six or 17 per cent the …

A Study Of The Effect Of Varying Serum Phenylalanine Levels On Changes In Intelligence Quotient, Darlene Imai Manullang Jun 1964

A Study Of The Effect Of Varying Serum Phenylalanine Levels On Changes In Intelligence Quotient, Darlene Imai Manullang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Data from thirty medical records of phenylketonuric children under treatment were investigated to determine at which serum phenylalanine level (0-3.9 mg. %, 4-7.9 mg %, 8-11.9 mg. %, greater than 12 mg. %) there would be the greatest increase in intelligence. The children involved in the study were divided into the following groups according to the age dietary treatment was initiated: 0 through 5 months, 6 through 11 months, 12 through 23 months, and over 2 years of age.

Among 6 patients who were placed on the diet during the first 5 months of life, it appears that the optimal …

The Reaction Of Hospitalized Children To Food, Lois Masat Magnussen May 1964

The Reaction Of Hospitalized Children To Food, Lois Masat Magnussen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hospital personnel are becoming more aware of the fact that hospitalization is traumatic to the emotional life of the young child. Since eating habits and emotions are so closely allied, it is probable that the young child's eating pattern will be affected during hospitalization. The purpose of this study was to determine the reaction of children between the ages of one through four to food during the first three days of hospitalization at the White Memorial Hospital. The method chosen to obtain this information was the descriptive survey. The tools used were a checklist for the researcher to record her …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of this study to identify the emotional needs of patients with infectious hepatitis through the use of nursing process studies. The information obtained, it was hoped, would be helpful in giving nurses better insight into the emotional needs of these patients and to give a basis for planning nursing care.

The descriptive survey was the method used; the tool, the nursing process study. Nursing care was given to six patients between the ages of 18 and 45 who had infectious hepatitis without other complications.

The nursing process studies were filled out by the investigator on each …

Distress In Children Going To X-Ray, Ina Madge Longway May 1963

Distress In Children Going To X-Ray, Ina Madge Longway

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It is commonly recognized that hospitalized children need psychological support and preparation for painful procedures. It is probable that little thought is given by hospital personnel to a similar preparation of the child for non-painful procedures. This study attempted to evaluate the distress incurred by children subjected to non-painful hospital procedures with little or no preparation. The procedure of x-ray was selected as being common and typical. The method used was the descriptive survey. The tools used were the taking of a series of six blood pressure readings per child, the administration of two forms of a short psychological test …

A Preliminary Report On The Itasca Bison Site, Creighton T. Shay

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In the summer of 1937 excavations conducted by the University of Minnesota Anthropology Department in Itasca State Park yielded extinct bison and other animal remains along with several stone artifacts. A preliminary notice was published in Science shortly after excavation was completed (Jenks, 193 7). The bones were extracted from a marl layer underlying a peat bog near the south end of the west arm of Lake Itasca. The deposit was discovered during construction of a road bridge over Nicollet Creek adjacent to the site. Material in the following report was assembled from unpublished field notes and records on file …

Growth Study Of Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Gordon Willfahrt Jan 1962

Growth Study Of Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Gordon Willfahrt

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This investigation was part of a general study aimed at shedding light upon the role of the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) as a forage fish of certain game fish species. Recent changes in the populations of such game fish species as the walleye ( Stizastedion vitreum), northern pike ( Esox lucius) , and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in the upper Mississippi River suggest that the gizzard shad population might have an important bearing on the present situation. The purpose of this investigation was to study the growth rates of the gizzard shad in the Upper Mississippi River during their first …

Water Resources Development -- An Analysis Of Economic Justification Practices Of The Corps Of Engineers, Kerwood W. Barrand Jan 1960

Water Resources Development -- An Analysis Of Economic Justification Practices Of The Corps Of Engineers, Kerwood W. Barrand

Masters Theses

"Presented herein is a brief analysis of the economic justification practices of the Corps of Engineers as commonly implemented in proposals concerning water resources projects. Where applicable, recommended methods are compared to similar methods advocated for, and accepted by, private engineering firms in similar situations.

The major problem exists in the lack of a profit motive in programs undertaken with the use of public funds. However, a profit can be said to have been realized in public works programs if the total benefits of the programs to all the people exceed the costs of these programs and, further, if the …
