Crude protein (CP), Ca and P concentrations and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of irrigated dwarf elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. N-75 Mott) as affected by the factorial combination of N (0, 150, 300 and 450 kg N/ha/year) and P (0, 50 and 100 kg P205/ha/year) fertilization was evaluated in a tropical dry forest in Zulia State, western region of Venezuela. A randomized complete block design with three replications was used. Soil was a low-fertility sandy-loam Udic Paleustalf (pH 6.1). The effect of nitrogen and phosphorus application on yield and sward structure as height and leaf, stem and dead forage composition of dwarf elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach) cv. Mott was studied under field conditions and complementary irrigation, during one year at very dry tropical forest with a semiarid climate in Venezuela. The nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) rate were 0, 150, 350, 450, kg ha-1 year and 0, 50 and 100 kg P2O5 ha-1 year respectively. A field trial was conducted over 6 years to assess the relative performance of three phosphate (P) fertilisers of differing solubility (single superphosphate, ‘longlife’ superphosphate, ‘reactive’ phosphate rock) on a permanent pasture at Methven in Canterbury, New Zealand. Plant P uptake data showed that while the overall relative effectiveness of the fertilisers was closely related to their water-soluble P content (single superphosphate > ‘longlife’ superphosphate > ‘reactive’ phosphate rock), the agronomic efficiency of the sparingly soluble phosphate rock fertiliser improved markedly with time. Soil acidity limits pasture establishment and productivity in the moister eastern half of South Africa. Sound lime requirement guidelines based on soil test data are required. In the study reported here, lime responses of annual (Lolium multiflorum) and perennial (Lolium perenne) ryegrasses were evaluated in irrigated field trials located on acidic, highly weathered soils. Annual ryegrass (yield response to lime 27 to 32%) was found to be markedly more tolerant of soil acidity than perennial ryegrass (yield response 68%). New management strategies are required in order to reduce the appreciable emissions of N from intensively managed grassland. Previous work has shown that if fertiliser is applied at rates that take account of the mineral N found in soil at the time of each application, N use efficiency can be improved. A novel approach is described which integrates soil testing and modelling to produce N fertiliser recommendations on a monthly basis. With a two year field experiment the influence of liming of strongly acid soils on wheat yield and on the availability of soil nutrients were studied. The results showed that liming increased soil pH and decreased exchangeable Al and available Fe and Zn. Wheat uptake of Mn was decreased, while P and Cu uptake were increased. Wheat biomass (hay plus seed) production and grain yield were also significantly increased.

The potential growth in the winter annual forage crops in the Southeast of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), is limited by the availability of nitrogen during the winter period. The effect of nitrogen fertilization on growth of the two main winter forage crops: oat (Avena sativa) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) was analyzed. Under winter-spring temperatures a higher growth potential was shown by annual ryegrass. The critical N doses were 150 and 100 kg.ha-1 of N for oat and annual ryegrass, respectively. Effects of phosphate application on the growth, yield and quality of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) were studied on the soils having various phosphorus levels. Superphosphate was applied to bring the available soil P at 5, 15, 25 and 35 mg P2O5 100 g-1 designated as A, B, C and D levels, respectively. Leaf area index (LAI) and dry matter increased on the higher P plots over the lower P plots. Paddock surveys and preliminary glasshouse experiments have identified acidification of the surface soil layers as a contributing factor to the problem of declining lucerne yields occurring in the mid north region of South Australia. In a field experiment, lime application at rates of 2 t/ha and 4 t/ha significantly improved the growth of lucerne in a soil with an acidic topsoil and alkaline subsoil. Lime incorporated into the soil had an initial short term advantage of improving lucerne production over lime applied to the soil surface. Eleven available strains of Bradyrhizobium sp were used to test four forage legumes, Crotalaria juncea (Crotalaria), Cajanus cajans (Guandu), Styzolobium deeriagianum (Mucuna-Ana) and Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (Guar) for symbiotic N-fixation ability. Greenhouse experiments were conducted for nine weeks in order to evaluate shoot, root, and nodule dry weight, nodule number, and shoot nitrogen content. Four strains presented relative nitrogen efficiency (RNE) over 100% with Crotalaria cultivar, whereas only one strain was more efficient with Guandu and Mucuna cultivars. Strain 633 was the only one which presented a high yield with Crotalaria, Guandu and Mucuna-Ana cultivars.

A comparison was made of pasture production from phosphate fertilisers, including superphosphate, reactive phosphate rocks (RPRs) and a non-reactive phosphate rock at two sites on the Southern tablelands of NSW, Australia. Production from all phosphate rocks was low in the first year at both sites, but RPRs were similar to superphosphate by the fourth year. Production from RPRs was low in a dry year which is consistent with the requirement for moist acid soils for effective release of P from RPRs. Performance of RPRs was better at the site which was moister and had higher summer rainfall.

A glasshouse experiment was carried out to determine how increasing rates of P supply (0, 33, 100 and 300 kg P ha-1) influenced the water use efficiency of white clover grown in a P-deficient soil under dry conditions. Increasing the P supply enhanced both shoot dry matter yield and water use by the clover plants. The relatively greater dry matter response meant that water use efficiency also increased with added P. High rates of water extraction by these high-P clover plants resulted in a marked drying of soil. Despite these dry soil conditions there was no adverse effect on growth …

Fertilization may have a positive effect in improving forage quantity and quality in natural meadows of Tierra del Fuego. The objective of the present study was to estimate N-P-S fertilizer effects on forage quality. The trial was set up in 1994 on an Entic Haploborol soil characterized by low P availability (12 ppm, Truog), high N content (1.5% total N) and medium acudity (pH 5.9). Little research has been done to determine the effect of fertilization on irrigated pastures in Santa Cruz (South Patagonia). The objective of the present study was to estimate the effects of NPS fertilizing effects on forage yield and quality. The trial was set up in 1994 on a Borolic Haplargid soil characterized by low N content (0.00875% total N), low P availability (9 ppm Olsen) and medium alcalinity (pH 8.4). Soil microbial biomass nitrogen (BN ) was periodically measured in two pastures a) grazed pastures without N fertilizer and b) grazed pastures receiving 200 kg of fertilizer N per year, respectively, during July 1993 to July 1994. Soil type was a volcanic soil Medial, thermic, Typic Distrandept. BN was highly variable and the two type of pastures showed a similar pattern of distribution, with statistical differences in only three sampling. Efficient methods of application may enable dairy producers to use slurry manure as aoereplacement for inorganic nitrogen on grassland. This study compares the effect of slurry applied in bands beneath the grass canopy (drag-shoe) with a broadcast of slurry on top of the canopy (splash-plate), and with fertilizer nitrogen on yield of grass. Animal production in New Zealand is dependent on pastoral legumes to build soil nitrogen fertility, which otherwise limits the growth of the major sward component, grass. Traditionally, in order to sustain legume vigour, single superphosphate has been applied to elevate soil phosphorus and sulphur levels. Rarely have either the agronomic or nutrient efficiencies of these systems been assessed. The aim of this study was to identify endophytic bacteria isolated from the nodules of healthy red clover plants (Trifolium pratense L.) and to assess their effects, alone and in combination with Rhizobium, on the growth and development of red clover seedlings. Clover root nodules were host to 12 bacteria species other than rhizobia. In root bacterization experiments, root nodule bacteria often promoted in vitro growth and nodulation of red clover when applied in combination with R. leguminosarum BV trifolii. Six alfalfa (Medicago sativa) varieties were grown in two contrasting soils to study their symbiotic ability as estimated by nodule biomass and dry matter yield in presence of the natural population of rhizobia of soil. Varieties can be discriminated on the basis of total (year) nodule biomass; their ranking for nodule biomass was consistent in the different soil types although soils significantly influenced nodulation and dry matter yield.

Lime incorporated into a basalt-derived clay loam lowered exchangeable aluminium in soil. Soil pH was still elevated, 9 years after 2 t/ha of lime was incorporated. With lower rates of lime the density of lucerne plants declined. Lucerne yield more than doubled with lime. After six years, the area was sown to a phalaris-clover pasture. A 15% increase in the yield of phalaris was recorded from limed plots over the next three years. Despite this, 11 years after liming, herbage P concentrations increased with lime, from 0.28% to 0.35%.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the respective importance of maize (Zea mays) and soil properties on the dissolution of two sparingly soluble P fertilizers. The surface horizon of an acidic and a calcareous soils were amended with Thomas’ slag or phosphate rock and were either incubated or cultivated with maize. Maize cultivation increased the rate of dissolution of both fertilizers in both soils. Its influence remained limited compared to fertilizer dissolution in the incubated acidic soil. The genetic composition of mixed populations of white clover growing in low fertility, grass-dominant hill pastures was estimated four and eight years after populations were established. Populations were based on an adapted ('Grasslands Tahora') or poorly adapted ('Grasslands Huia') cultivar, and received either no fertiliser, or 35kg P /ha /year. The P response curve of surviving plants was also determined, and compared with plants grown from 'standard' seedlines of the respective cultivars. We investigated seasonal variations of soil enzyme activities, soil inorganic N, soil microbial biomass N (BN) and soil total sugar C (TSC) during March to December in cattle-grazed pasture in Japan (Andisols). Dehydrogenase activity had three peaks in a year, on the other hand, phosphomonoesterase activity increased from spring (April) up to summer (August) but then gradually decreased toward winter. Livestock farmers face constraints in efficient manure management because of limited land availability, especially during the growing season, but reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) may provide a solution. We measured yield and apparent N removal of established reed canarygrass with surface-applied dairy manure slurry at three locations in the Upper Midwest, USA. The response of the tropical forage legume macrotiloma guata (Macrotyloma axillare (E. Mey) Verdc) to potassium rates was studied in a greenhouse experiment. The plants were grown in nutrient solution with seven potassium (K) rates, 0; 3.5; 7; 21; 35; 105 and 245 mg l-1 of solution, in randomized complete block design, with four replications. There was significant response of the legume to potassium rates. Considerations are made on the influence of these levels on plant dry matter yield in two harvests, root dry matter production and potassium and magnesium concentrations in the plant tissue.

The objective of the experiment was to identify traits associated with the production of plant biomass, and hence with P utilization efficiency, when legume species were fertilized. Red clover (Trifolium pratense) and narrowleaf birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus tenuis) were compared in a greenhouse experiment using phosphorus deficient soils. Three plants grew in pots fertilized with 0, 2, 4, 8, 15, 20, 30 and 40 ppm in soil, in a randomized experimental design. Harvest was made at 60 days from the sowing date. Phosphogypsum As A Source Of Nutrients For Bahiagrass, J E. Rechcigl, I S. Alcordo

Phosphogypsum is a by-product of the manufacture of phosphoric acid from phosphate rock and is a potential source of sulfur and calcium for crops. There are currently more than 700 million Mg of phosphogypsum in Florida alone stacked in waste piles and an additional 30 million Mg produced annually. A 3-year study was conducted to determine whether addition of phosphogypsum to bahiagrass would increase production and quality. Results indicate that addition of up to 4.0 Mg/ha phosphogypsum increased bahiagrass yields, protein content, and in vitro digestibility of forage. Field experiments and commercial experience with the pasture legume Centrosema pascuorum (centurion) in the Katherine and Douglas Daly districts of the Northern Territory over the past ten years were reviewed. Results show that cultivars of this species (Cavalcade and Bundey) have good potential for improving both soil fertility and the quality of dry season forage (as hay or grazing) for cattle in mixed farming systems in the semi-arid tropics of north west Australia.

The effect of different levels of fertilization and regrowth periods on the quantity and quality and distribution of yields of eleven grassland species were studied in two plots in Hungary. The effect of the following variables were tested: regrowth period of 20 and 40 days; control, 100 and 200 kg N ha-1 and 11 grass and leguminous species.
