An Inventory And Condition Survey Of Rangelands In The Carnarvon Basin, Western Australia, A L. Payne, G F. Spencer, P J. Curry

Technical Bulletins

The inventory and condition survey of rangelands in the Carnarvon Basin, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) between 1980 and 1982, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. The area surveyed covers …

Investigation Of A Saline Valley On Allandale Research Farm, D J. Mcfarlane, R Engel, A T. Ryder Jan 1987

Investigation Of A Saline Valley On Allandale Research Farm, D J. Mcfarlane, R Engel, A T. Ryder

Resource management technical reports

Geophysical surveys and drilling were used to investigate a saline valley on Allandale Research Farm. These techniques showed that the geology is controlling the location of two main areas of saline seeps and they identified another area at risk of increased salinity. They were also used to obtain information on the groundwater system and to assist in making management recommendations.

Electromagnetic terrain conductivity surveys showed that the most saline soils occurred upstream of a cross-cutting magnetic anomaly caused by a dolerite dyke. A seismic survey showed that the anomaly coincided with a bedrock rise. This bedrock rise restricts groundwater flow …

Evaluation Of Risk Factors Leading To Soil Destabilisation On The South Coastal Sandplain Of Western Australia, R V R Gwynn, P A. Findlater, J R. Edwards

Resource management technical reports

The problems of wind erosion in part of the south coast of Western Australian sandplain area were described previously (Gorddard et al, 1981) with 7.3 per cent of cleared and 18.3 per cent of the cropped area showing evidence of sand blasting. Department of Agriculture trials have shown that the loss of the top four millimetres of top soil from pastured paddocks can reduce following crop yields by up to 20 per cent (Marsh and Carter, 1983). Animal production problems associated with wind erosion of soils have not been quantified, but a number of problems such as reduced carrying capacity …

Field Peas In The Wheatbelt, R J. French Jan 1987

Field Peas In The Wheatbelt, R J. French

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Plantings of lupins in the Western Australian wheatbelt increased rapidly in the late 1970s and early 980s as improved varieties became available and farmers realised the benefits to be gained from growing grain legumes. Grain legumes are useful not simply as alternative cash crops. They provide 'fixed' atmospheric nitrogewn to following cereal crops and act as a cleaning crop to break cereal disease cycles. They are also valuable sheep feed.

In 1975, throughout the wheatbelt, the Department of Agriculture began a comparison of several alternative legumes. The crops included field peas, faba beans, chickpeas, lentills and various vetches. Field peas …

The Effect Of Particle Size On Phosphate Adsorption By Fluvial Sediment, Michael F.A. Stone Jan 1987

The Effect Of Particle Size On Phosphate Adsorption By Fluvial Sediment, Michael F.A. Stone

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The quantitative phosphate adsorption behaviour of ten grain size fractions of an experimental sediment (silica sand) and fluvial sediment from two Southwestern Ontario rivers, were evaluated and compared to determine the effect of particle size on phosphate absorption. In addition, the elemental composition of grain size fractions of fluvial sediment were determined by X-Ray fluorescence spectrometry to study the combined effect of particle size and sediment geochemical composition on phosphate adsorption. Results of the adsorption studies indicate that phosphate adsorption per unit mass increases in non-linear fashion with decreasing grain size. The capacity of grain size fractions of silica sand …

Chemical, Physical And Mineralogical Properties Of Mitchell And Tripp Soils In The Nebraska Panhandle, G. A. Uzochukwu, D. T. Lewis Oct 1986

Chemical, Physical And Mineralogical Properties Of Mitchell And Tripp Soils In The Nebraska Panhandle, G. A. Uzochukwu, D. T. Lewis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Mitchell and Tripp soils are some of the most important agricultural soils in the Nebraska Panhandle. Yet, they have received little attention in terms of their basic chemical, physical, and mineral properties. Management decisions can be made on a more informed basis if this kind of information is available. This study was to acquire the information, with special emphasis on mineralogical properties of the soils and their parent materials. This emphasis was given because it is known that other soils in the region contain volcanic ash in measurable amounts. The presence of volcanic ash in soils has been associated with …

Economics Of Legume Cover Crops, Wilbur Frye

Soil Science News and Views

We have compared hairy vetch, big flower vetch, rye, and corn residue as winter cover treatments in no-tillage corn production since 1977. One of the objectives of this research is to determine the economic feasibility of using a legume cover crop to supply a portion of the nitrogen needs of a corn crop. Results reported here are based on corn yields obtained during 1977 through 1981 at Lexington and 1980 through 1985 at Princeton.

Abatement Of Nitrate Pollution In Groundwater And Surface Runoff From Cropland Using Legume Cover Crops With No-Till Corn, M. Scott Smith, Jac J. Varco

KWRRI Research Reports

Agricultural practices can have a significant impact on water quality. The effects of leguminous winter cover crops on leaching of NO-3; from soil have been investigated in this project. Legume cover crops, by fixation of atmospheric N, can reduce the amount of fertilizer N required to produce summer grain crops. The methods initially used to evaluate cover crop effects on No; transport included suction probe lysimeters and measurement of NO-3; in soil samples collected to a depth of 90 cm. These measurements demonstrated extreme spatial variability in NO-3; distribution and water …

Effect Of Soil Water Stress And Irrigation On Growth, Yield And Quality Of Burley Tobacco, Ronald E. Phillips, J. E. Leggett

Soil Science News and Views

An experiment was conducted for a period of three years, 1982, 1983 and 1984, in order to evaluate the effects of soil water stress and irrigation on growth, yield and quality of burley tobacco at Spindletop Farm, Lexington. The variety KY 21 was grown all three years. Three treatments were used in the experiment: (1) check, rainfall only, not irrigated, (2) well watered, rainfall plus supplemental irrigation, and (3) water stressed beginning 50 days after transplanting. The soil of treatment 3 was covered with black plastic to prevent rainfall from entering the soil.

Soil Erosion With Different Tillage And Cropping Systems, Monroe Rasnake, Wilbur Frye, David C. Ditsch, Robert L. Blevins Jun 1986

Soil Erosion With Different Tillage And Cropping Systems, Monroe Rasnake, Wilbur Frye, David C. Ditsch, Robert L. Blevins

Soil Science News and Views

Corn and soybeans are produced on approximately three million acres of Kentucky farmland each year. L 1ttle soil loss occurs when these crops are grown on nearly level or gently sloping land. However, much of the grain production is on sloping land that is cultivated every year and often excessive soil erosion occurs. If a field is allowed to erode excessively for several years, the soil usually becomes less productive. Soil removed in runoff may pollute lakes and streams or cover highly productive soil with low quality sediments.

Long-Term Effects Of Tillage On The Retention And Transport Of Soil Water, H. D. Scott, L. S. Wood, W. M. Miley Jun 1986

Long-Term Effects Of Tillage On The Retention And Transport Of Soil Water, H. D. Scott, L. S. Wood, W. M. Miley

Technical Reports

Quantitative measurements were made of the physical and chemical properties of two virgin prairie soils, Crowley and Jay, that remain in their native Arkansas environments and of similar soils that had been tilled extensively. Comparisons were made of soil properties at several depths. When compared with the tilled soils the virgin soils had higher organic matter contents, saturated hydraulic conductivities and water retained at several applied pressures. Bulk densities and hydraulic resistances were lower in the virgin soils. For the Crowley silt loam, values of pH and elemental contents of the virgin soil were higher than those of the tilled …

Algal Growth Potentials And Heavy Metal Concentrations Of The Primary Streams To Upper Beaver Lake, Richard L. Meyer, W. Reed Green, Kenneth F. Steele, Diana Wickliff Jun 1986

Algal Growth Potentials And Heavy Metal Concentrations Of The Primary Streams To Upper Beaver Lake, Richard L. Meyer, W. Reed Green, Kenneth F. Steele, Diana Wickliff

Technical Reports

Meyer and Green (1984) demonstrated the probable inhibition of algal growth potential by heavy metals in upper Beaver Lake. Upper Beaver Lake receives water from three tributaries. One contains a small reservoir and the combined streams receive sewage input. Collections were made approximately monthly at eight sites for the Algal Assay Bottle Test (AABT) and heavy metal analysis. In general, AABT results indicated that the collections above the sewage lnput were phosphorus limited while those below were nitrogen or combined nitrogen and phosphorus limited. Growth inhibition occurred during summer and early fall at various sites with greater inhibition at the …

Comparison Of Four Infiltration Models In Characterizing Infiltration Through Surface Mine Profiles, Larry G. Wells, A. D. Ward, I. D. Moore, R. E. Phillips May 1986

Comparison Of Four Infiltration Models In Characterizing Infiltration Through Surface Mine Profiles, Larry G. Wells, A. D. Ward, I. D. Moore, R. E. Phillips

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A laboratory infiltrometer system was used to evaluate the infiltration process through reconstructed surface mine profiles. Six different profiles were subjected to constant simulated rainfall intensities for selected test conditions. Surface runoff rates were monitored and transient soil moisture contents in the profiles were measured with a gamma density gauge. Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity relationships were determined using Campbelfs method and the "zero-flux" procedure. The infiltration process was modeled by the SCS curve number method, a form of Holtan's equation, the Green-Ampt model and Richards' equation. SCS curve numbers were determined by fitting the method to the observed results. Richards' equation …
