Phosphorus Nutrition On Leaching Sands., D. M. Deeley, S. M. Mason, B. G. Barker

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

The excessive amounts of nutrients entering the Peel-Harvey Estuarine system have resulted in a marked increase in the abundance of algal species .within the estuary and reduced production on the sandy coastal soils of the catchment from which the nutrients are being leached. Recent stream samplings by D.C.E have shown that the deep grey Bassendean sands may be contributing up to 40 per cent of the total P loading in the Harvey River. Agriculture Department trials around Albany on similar sands have shown that up to 80 per cent of the bicarb extractable P may be lost after only 150 …

The Distribution And Properties Of Lateritic Gravels At Yalanbee And Their Interactions With Soil Phosphorus, David Weaver Jan 1982

The Distribution And Properties Of Lateritic Gravels At Yalanbee And Their Interactions With Soil Phosphorus, David Weaver

All other publications

This study aimed at investigating the distributive patterns and properties of lateritic gravels at "Yalanbee" (C.S.I.R.O. research station) and how these properties and patterns e ffect the adsorption of phosphorus onto the lateritic gravels. It also aimed partly at investigating the effect of the presence of lateritic gravels on the adsorption of phosphate by "whole soils". Gravels in the Yalanbee soil had migrated since their formation as was shown by their abundance and large size at the top of a slope which graded to less abundant, smaller and more rounded gravels further down the s lope. The distribution of gravels …

Flume Experiments On Bedforms And Structures At The Dune-Plane Bed Transition, Francis P.J. Lockett Jan 1982

Flume Experiments On Bedforms And Structures At The Dune-Plane Bed Transition, Francis P.J. Lockett

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A tiltable, recirculating flume, 18 metres long and 76 cm. wide was used to investigate bedforms and structures near the transition between dunes and a plane bed for a moderately sorted, coarse sand. At Froude numbers ranging from about 0.4 to 1.0, three dune types developed: (1) asymmetrical (triangular) dunes, (2) convex (symmetrical) dunes and (3) humpback (whaleback) dunes. Asymmetrical dunes had gentle, long stoss sides and steep, short lee sides and contained cross-stratification with a maximum dip mostly about 30 degrees to 35 degrees. Flow separation and avalanching were strongly developed to the lee of these dunes. Convex dunes …

Molybdenum Nutrition Of Crops In Kentucky, J. L. Sims Dec 1981

Molybdenum Nutrition Of Crops In Kentucky, J. L. Sims

Soil Science News and Views

Molybdenum (Mo) is one of eight micronutrient elements required for the growth of plants. Research conducted in California nearly 40 years ago established its need for plant growth. Mo deficiencies have been reported throughout the world, especially on acid soils in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. Generally, the Mo requirement of leguminous crops is greater than for non~legumes, but many non-leguminous field and vegetable crops have responded to additions of fertilizer Mo under severe deficiency conditions. Of all the nutrient elements required by plants for growth, Mo is needed in smallest amounts.

Use Of Magnesium (Mg) For Crop Production In Kentucky, John H. Grove Nov 1981

Use Of Magnesium (Mg) For Crop Production In Kentucky, John H. Grove

Soil Science News and Views

Magnesium (Mg) is an important element in the nutrition of plants and animals, although it has long been considered a "secondary" nutrient for plants. Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are "primary'' nutrients and are usually given the greatest consideration in crop fertility programs. However, as yield levels have risen, more attention has been directed towards Mg and other nutrient elements. Concern about hypomagnesemia (grass tetany) in ruminants (cattle, sheep) has led to particular concern about soil and plant Mg levels.

Regional Tectonics And Seismicity Of Eastern Nebraska, Annual Report, July 1980–June 1981, R. R. Burchett

Conservation and Survey Division

This annual report presents and interprets the information obtained by the Conservation and Survey Division (Nebraska Geological Survey) during contract year July 1, 1980, to June 30, 1981, under contract NRC-04-76-3l5 with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The information pertains to the geology, structure, tectonics, and seismicity of eastern Nebraska with emphasis on central Otoe County. Some of the information presented here results from a combination of studies begun in earlier years but the greater part results from studies begun during the contract year.

The scope of the studies is summarized as follows:

1. Rock outcrops in Otoe County were …
