Commercial Fertilizers For Winter Wheat In Relation To The Properties Of Nebraska Soils, R. A. Olson, H. F. Rhoades Jan 1953

Commercial Fertilizers For Winter Wheat In Relation To The Properties Of Nebraska Soils, R. A. Olson, H. F. Rhoades

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

It is the purpose of this bulletin to report the investigations that have been made correlating soil properties and fertilization practices with yields of winter wheat. Since the success or failure of fertilization practices is so dependent on specific soil conditions, an attempt has been made here to further characterize the major soils of the different sections of the state which are devoted to wheat production and to analyze fertilizer practices and results in relation to the soil properties determined. The data are summarized for the four sections of the state designated as southeastern, east-south-central, west-south-central and western Nebraska. These …

Wind Erosion Control—I, D J. Fleay Jan 1953

Wind Erosion Control—I, D J. Fleay

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Desserts have been formed in some parts of the world by the action of wind on once productive soils. This could happen to the light land areas of Western Australia if we do not profit by the lessons of the past and manage these soils with great care.

Soil Conservation Service - Basis Of Co-Operation, G H. Burvill Nov 1952

Soil Conservation Service - Basis Of Co-Operation, G H. Burvill

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

The Soil Conservation Service has been established as provided in the Soil Conservation Act, 1945. To carry out its objectives will require the co-operation with it of individual farmers and landholders. The policy of the Service is therefore to encourage farmers to help themselves, and particularly to encourage them to recognise the need for soil conservation methods and for soil erosion control in the early stages. More particularly, the Service aims to provide, through its trained staff, technical asistance in the way of agricultural advice, research, conservation, planning, layouts and surveys. As indicated below, under the heading "Charges for Soil …

The Regeneration And Maintenance Of Wimmera Ryegrass Pastures Under Saline Soil Condition, F L. Shier Nov 1952

The Regeneration And Maintenance Of Wimmera Ryegrass Pastures Under Saline Soil Condition, F L. Shier

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Over the past ten years, Wimmera ryegrass pastures at the Salmon Gums Re- VJ search Station have been improved and maintained by periodic cultivation of the soil even without applications of superphosphate. On heavy crab-holey soil affected by high salt content and unsatisfactory for wheat growing, cultivation treatments have produced remarkably uniform stands of Wimmera ryegrass as shown in the accompanying pictures. The bare patches due to salt, have been largely eliminated. If the interval between cultivations is more than three years Wimmera pastures deteriorate badly.

Soil-Saving Schools Sep 1952

Soil-Saving Schools

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Save the soil for your sons and grandsons," or "Every farmer his own soil conservationist" might well serve as slogans for the recently-inaugurated farmers' schools organised in this State by the Soil Conservation Service. Judging by the enthusiasm shown by pupils at the first two schools, held in August last, this highly practical approach to an important subject seems destined to usher in an entirely new conception of soil conservation work as it affects the individual land-owner.

The Hose U-Tube Level, J P. Fallon Sep 1952

The Hose U-Tube Level, J P. Fallon

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

With the growing use of soil conservation practices throughout the farming areas, there has been an increasing demand for a simple levelling device that will enable farmers to take their own levels. When they have become familiar with the use of pasture furrows, contour banks and the various other mechanical erosion control measures, farmers with the aid of such an instrument would be able to make an immediate start on an erosion control programme. The instrument would also prove useful for numerous small jobs around the farm when accurate levels are required. Tests have shown the "Hose U-Tube Level" here …

Soil Conservation Farming Jul 1952

Soil Conservation Farming

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

A list of farmers known to be using contour practices for soil conservation, is printed at the end of this note. It will enable other interested farmers to find and see something of such methods. Now is considered an appropriate time to publish this list as many farmers will shortly be travelling through the countryside to agricultural shows and field days.

Dams On The Hillsides May 1952

Dams On The Hillsides

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

A reader of the "Journal of Agriculture" recently wrote to the Commissioner of Soil Conservation concerning the current tendency towards sinking dams on hillsides. He stated that many farmers and contractors were throwing up holding banks in such a manner that a large percentage of the water impounded was lost by seepage under the banks.

Water Erosion Control, L C. Lightfoot Mar 1952

Water Erosion Control, L C. Lightfoot

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Although soil erosion caused by water action is common in our agricultural areas, effective erosion control measures, likely to pay for themselves quickly, can be applied in nearly every case. Plant cover above the soil surface, and fertile soil with good structures are the main factors which enable soils to resist erosion. Dense pasture gives the best cover and at the same time improves the fertility and structure of the soil both effectively and economically, so land management adjusted to the need and capability of soils, slopes and climate is of first importance. Contour practices are of secondary value and …

Kimberley Soils Need Phosphates, W. M. Nunn Jan 1952

Kimberley Soils Need Phosphates, W. M. Nunn

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Research work carried out at the Kimberley Research Station on the Ord River, and on experimental plots throughout the East and West Kimberleys, indicates that the soils of the Kimberleys are quite as deficient in phosphorus as are the soils of our agricultural areas where superphosphate is essential to the growth of most crops.

This may come as a surprise to many people, for there has been a widespread tendency to assume that the Kimberleys soils, especially those of the Ord and Fitzroy valleys, are highly fertile.

The black earths of Queensland's Darling Downs produce most enviable yields of sorghum …

Soil Conservation In Western Australia, G. H. Burvill Jan 1952

Soil Conservation In Western Australia, G. H. Burvill

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Soil is a farmer's basic asset. This issue of "The Journal of Agriculture" in a new form designed to provide still better service to the farming community, is an appropriate medium through which to remind the man on the land of what the soil means to him—and to the State. The farmer's duties to himself, his family and the State are summed up in the words "soil conservation" which is merely another way of saying "wise land use."

The Red Cloud Sand And Gravel, A New Pleistocene Formation In Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Eugene C. Reed, A. L. Lugn

Conservation and Survey Division

Recent studies of the stratigraphy and paleontology of the Pleistocene of Nebraska have resulted in additional data that require further clarification and partial revision of the Grand Island sand and gravel formation (1,2) in order that there may be no condusion as the results of varying usage of the term.

The Freezing Point Of Water In Puddled And Unpuddled Soils At Different Soil Moisture Tension Values, Robert B. Campbell May 1951

The Freezing Point Of Water In Puddled And Unpuddled Soils At Different Soil Moisture Tension Values, Robert B. Campbell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A technique that will adequately describe the physical condition of water in the soil has long been desired by scientists. The method should include the effect of soluble materials on the osmotic pressure of the soil solution, and also the effect of surface force action between the soil and soil water.

Parker (8) demonstrated that the freezing point was reduced in the presence of finely divided material. This suggested the possibility of using the cryoscopic procedure to measure the physical condition of water soil. More recently, the introduction of Thermistors for accurate temperature measurement have made it desirable to investigate …

Effect Of Stubble Mulching On Number And Activity Of Earthworms, S. P. Teotia, F. L. Duley, T. M. Mccalla Sep 1950

Effect Of Stubble Mulching On Number And Activity Of Earthworms, S. P. Teotia, F. L. Duley, T. M. Mccalla

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A survey of earthworm population under different cropping systems was made under stubble mulch farming and where the residue was plowed under. The influence of earthworms on some of the important physical and biological properties of the soil was studied. Their role in the decomposition of crop residues was also determined.

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla Mar 1950

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

SUMMARY

Laboratory tests were made to determine the effectiveness of different compounds and microbial groups in increasing the stability of Peorian loess lumps against the action of falling water drops. The influence of these on percolation tests in the laboratory was also determined.

Many organic substances-dextrose, sucrose, starch, peptone, cullulose, and gum arabic-did not themselves contribute directly to soil-structure stability, though these substances do furnish energy material for soil microorganisms, which can convert them readily into either microbial tissue or decomposition products that increase soil-structure stability. Lignin, proteins, oils, fats, waxes, resin, and paraffin increased the stability of lumps of …

The Potash Status Of Utah Soils, Sukhendu Bikas Chaudhuri May 1949

The Potash Status Of Utah Soils, Sukhendu Bikas Chaudhuri

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Potassium is one of the essential plant nutrient elements. It is used by plants in the synthesis and distribution of carbohydrates (25)2 and in the formation of proteins and oils. Potassium also seems to exert many of its effects by influencing enzymatic activity in cells.

Potassium occurs as the monovalent cation on plant cells and undoubtedly exerts important effects upon such phnomona as the permiability of the cytoplasmic membranes and hydration of protoplasma. Plants assimilate potassium either from the soil solution or directly from the exchange complex.

The Effect Of Light, Soil Temperature, And Soil Moisture On High-Lime Chlorosis, Lauren M. Burtch May 1948

The Effect Of Light, Soil Temperature, And Soil Moisture On High-Lime Chlorosis, Lauren M. Burtch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Chlorosis of plants from a lack of available iron is one of the most common plant nutrient problems of the calcareous soils of the west. The disease is characterized by a yellowing of the plant leaves and is accompanied, in severe cases, by a partial root death and premature defoliation (3). In addition to reducing growth, the disease greatly reduces the quality and yield of plants.

Many types of plants are affected by iron chlorosis. In Hawaii and Porto Rico rice, sugar cane and pineapple are susceptible, while in California and Arizona, citrus trees are seriously affected. In Utah apples, …

Solubility And Physiological Availability Of Phosphates In Sodium And Calcium Systems, Parker F. Pratt May 1948

Solubility And Physiological Availability Of Phosphates In Sodium And Calcium Systems, Parker F. Pratt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the principal fertility problems of calcareous soils is the lack of available phosphates. The factors which control this availability are not completely understood. One hindrance to the solution of the problems involved results from confusion of the concepts of solubility and availability. Availability is the net effect of the chemical state of a plant nutrient element and the ability of the plant to utilize the forms of the element present under the existing chemical and physical environmental conditions. In this paper, the term solubility will be used to designate the chemical solubility of an element in water or …
