Review Of Soil Conservation Legislation : Carnarvon Horticultural Area, Jean-Pierre Clement
Review Of Soil Conservation Legislation : Carnarvon Horticultural Area, Jean-Pierre Clement
Agriculture reports
Lower Gascoyne Management Strategy The Carnarvon horticultural area has suffered considerable erosion damage following flooding of the Gascoyne River. Factors contributing to the erosion include a move to greater vegetable production, the carrying out of unauthorised earthworks and general confusion about the laws that apply to land management and erosion control. With this context, the purpose of this report is: • to clarify the laws applying to erosion control in the Carnarvon horticultural area; • to identify the public authorities with management responsibility for erosion control; and • to suggest a model by which erosion controls and management responsibilities can …
Land-Use Effects On Soil-Water Retention Characteristic, Naomi Colton, Kristofor Brye
Land-Use Effects On Soil-Water Retention Characteristic, Naomi Colton, Kristofor Brye
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Tillage can negatively affect soil physical properties such as bulk density, organic matter content, and soil hydraulic properties, which in turn affect how plants grow. The objective of this study was to evaluate water retention characteristics of a Jay silt loam soil under cultivated agriculture and native tallgrass prairie in northwest Arkansas. Air-dry soil samples collected from 0-10 cm depth were re-wet with varying amounts of distilled water to create a range of water contents. After overnight equilibration, the water potential was measured on the re-wet soil samples using a dewpoint potentiameter. The relationship between water potential (Ψ) and water …
Decadal Responses In Soil N Dynamics At A Paired Watershed Experiment In Maine, Sultana Sarvatara Shah
Decadal Responses In Soil N Dynamics At A Paired Watershed Experiment In Maine, Sultana Sarvatara Shah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen is commonly thought of as the most limiting nutrient to plant growth, yet elevated N deposition can result in N accumulating in excess of biotic demand, a condition known as 'TI Saturation." Excess N can perturb soil microbial N transformations and may cause initial increases in net N mineralization rates followed by decreases in net N mineralization with concomitant increases in net nitrification. Along with increases in net nitrification and N loss, N saturation is often associated with a loss of forest productivity. Understanding nitrogen dynamics in soil under enhanced N deposition is key to predicting future forest health. …
Fertigation Of Vegetables In Western Australia, J Burt
Fertigation Of Vegetables In Western Australia, J Burt
Bulletins 4000 -
Fertigation is the technique of using soluble fertilisers to supply essential nutrients to vegetables through sprinkler or trickle irrigation systems, or by means of a boom spray. It is ideally suited to most horticultural areas in Western Australia, especially the sandy soils of the Swan Coastal Plain that have a poor capacity to retain nutrients.
Before and after planting, nutrients are often applied to vegetables on soils of the Swan Coastal Plain by applications of poultry manure* or solid fertilisers. After planting, fertigation is a safe and effective method of applying top-dressings of nutrients to crops, especially after the rows …
Teco: Carbon Monoxide Consumption By Forest And Agroecosystem Soils, Gary M. King
Teco: Carbon Monoxide Consumption By Forest And Agroecosystem Soils, Gary M. King
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Carbon monoxide is a more dynamic component of the atmosphere than methane, occurring at a lower concentration but substantially higher flux. CO and hydroxyl radical interact rapidly, affecting a number of atmospheric parameters: the oxidative state of the troposphere; the fate and residence times of methane, non-methane organics and inorganics; tropospheric ozone; and the extent of thermal forcing. Soils consume atmospheric CO, accounting for 10-25% of the global carbon budget, depending on the source estimate. Some of the controls of soil CO uptake and production have been described generally, but much remains unknown. Details of CO uptake in agroecosystems are …

Vegetation Health Analysis (Peel-Harvey Coastal Plain Catchment) : An Impact Study On The Use Of Alkaloam (Bauxite Residue) As A Soil Amendment On Agricultural Land, Garry Heady, Chris Ferreira
All other publications
In 1997, a program was established to monitor the long term, (a minimum of 10 years), impacts on remnant native vegetation, of Alkaloam bauxite residue used as a soil amendment on adjacent agricultural land Data collection is to be repeated on an annual basis for the duration of the program. This report presents pre-treatment site and vegetation data for 2001, the fourth year of sampling in the program. Overall results are compared with those from 1997, 1998 and 2000. Descriptions of monitoring sites and an outline of project design and methodology are provided so the report can be read independently …

Potential Runoff Accumulation In Wheatbelt Towns Of Western Australia, Mahtab Ali, Travis Cattlin, Neil Coles, Sharam Sharafi
Potential Runoff Accumulation In Wheatbelt Towns Of Western Australia, Mahtab Ali, Travis Cattlin, Neil Coles, Sharam Sharafi
Resource management technical reports
Describes an analysis of flood runoff volumes from 16 small, gauged catchments in the agricultural areas of south western Australia. It also describes methods for estimating flood runoff volumes from ungauged catchments. The independent variables found to be statistically significant in explaining the variability in flood runoff volumes from the gauged catchments were catchment area, mean annual rainfall and the percentage of the catchment that was cleared. No soil factor was found to be significant.

Monitoring Subsurface Drainage Flow At Remote Locations, Stephen R. Workman, Stephen F. Higgins, Scott A. Shearer
Monitoring Subsurface Drainage Flow At Remote Locations, Stephen R. Workman, Stephen F. Higgins, Scott A. Shearer
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Laboratory evaluations and field results are presented for a slotted weir used to measure discharge from subsurface drains. The head–discharge curve for the vertical slot is a simple power function with an exponent of 1.5. There was excellent agreement (r2 > 0.99 and 1:1 slope) between predicted and observed discharge in laboratory testing of 12 test weirs representing five slot widths. The primary advantages of the vertical slot weir are its simplicity, ease of maintenance, and ability to measure small flow rates. Disadvantages include a tendency for the slot to close a small amount over time as a result of …

Organic Vegetables : A Guide To Production, Steven Mccoy
Organic Vegetables : A Guide To Production, Steven Mccoy
Bulletins 4000 -
There appears to be considerable opportunity for the development of organic vegetable production in Western Australia for either fresh or processed product. While a number of growers are successfully producing relatively small quantities of organic vegetables for both domestic and export markets, few large scale commercial growers have sought to capitalise on this opportunity.
Consumer interest in organically grown vegetables has increased rapidly in recent years due largely to concerns relating to food safety, health and the environment. For more information on markets for organic vegetables refer to AGWEST publication “Market Prospects – Organic Carrots and other Vegetables”.
