INTRODUCTION

This paper will amount to an inquiry into the mathematical structure and properties of a matrix of approximate integration formulas due to Werner Romberg 1 which have found considerable favor in numerical analysis during the past decade. Like other devices for approximate integration the Romberg method has its origin in the exhaustion techniques developed by the Greeks for determining the areas of figures enclosed by lines in the plane. It is particularly closely associated with the scheme employed by Archimedes2 (circa 250 B.C.) for approximating the value of [3.14]. A study was undertaken to survey by questionnaire and interview methods the breakfast and snack habits of Adventist and non-Adventist adolescents. The purposes of the study were: (I) to find out if there is any difference in the practices of Adventist and non-Adventist teenagers, and (2) to determine their attitudes toward snacking and omission of breakfast.

Results of the questionnaire were coded, punched onto IBM cards, and fed into computing machines for item and statistical analysis. Chi-square test analyses were done on denominational classification against some questions of interest to show any significant differences between Adventist and non-Adventist students' responses. …

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of particular sounds upon certain indices of cardio-pulmonary function and the degree and pattern of changes which occurred in the indices. The specific physiological parameters chosen to be monitored were heart rate, respiratory rate, mean tidal volume, instantaneous minute volume, and oxygen consumption. The hypothesis was that particular sounds will cause changes in certain indices of cardio-pulmonary functions. The purpose of this study was to discover whether or not patients and nurses derived a similar meaning from pictures of a nurse touching a patient in various ways. Five by seven inch black and white photographs were shown to thirty patients and thirty registered nurses. The subjects were controlled in regard to sex, race, residence, language, and physical and emotional orientation. They were asked to focus upon the photographed nurse's touch and to tell in one or two words what meaning they felt that the nurse was trying to convey to the patient by her touch. The morphologic characteristics of the oral cavity in five contemporary Western Indian and Alaskan Eskimo groups have been investigated by the use of study models of the dental archs. The sample consisted of 216 individuals, including 44 Navajos, 43 Apaches, 40 Papagos, 42 Pimas and 47 Alaskan Eskimos.

The first purpose of the study was to determine the extent of investigator error. This was accomplished by remeasuring many morphologic traits of the dentition in 125 Indians which had previously been measured by different investigators using the same study models. A total of 223 cephalometric radiographs selected from six contemporary western United States and Alaskans native groups were analyzed by use of the Bjork cephalometric analysis. Those native groups selected were the Eskimos, Apaches, Navajos, Papagos, Pimas and Mayos. Approximately thirty to forty natives from each group were used in the study with ages ranging from thirteen to thirty-five years. The majority were in the fifteen to twenty year age range.

Model estimation programming provides a method for obtaining extreme solutions subject to constraints. Functions which are continuous with continuous first and second derivatives in the neighborhood of the solution are approximated using quadratic polynomials (termed estimating functions) derived from computed or experimental data points. Using the estimating functions, an approximation problem is solved by a numerical adaptation of the method of Lagrange. The method is not limited by the concavity of the objective function.

Two computer programs were developed using a CDC 3100. They were written in FORTRAN IV.

One program uses four tape drives, one card reader, and one printer. It will calculate factorial analysis of variance with or without covariance and/or multivariate analysis for one to eight factors and up to twenty-five variables.

The other program is used for completely randomized designs, randomized block designs, and latin square designs. It will handle twenty-five treatments, rows (blocks), and columns. The program can handle fifteen variables using any number of these variables for covariates.

The solution to a set of simultaneous equations is of the form A^-1 B = X where A^-1 is the inverse of A in the equation AX= B. The purpose of this study is to obtain an exact A^-1 through the use of rational arithmetic, and to study the behavior of rational numbers when used in arithmetic calculations.

A series of experiments involving Listeria monocytogenes was undertaken to study first the fecal shedding of Listeria by conventional mice challenged intraperitoneally with Listeria and second the fecal shedding and ability to survive of germ free mice with similar challenge. In addition, mites infesting Listeria infected mice were cultured for their possible contamination by Listeria.

A study comparing the 3- and 5-meal plans of food service, as used in long-stay geriatric units in San Bernardino County, have been compared. Three homes utilizing the 5-meal plan and three utilizing the 3-meal plan, to serve as controls, were chosen. A random sample of ten patients from each home was observed for three days to find the daily average nutrients in the foods served, eaten, and wasted. Also, interviews to compare factual information and attitudes were utilized for sample patients and personnel. The nutritional data was analyzed on the computer.

Study casts and cephalograms were obtained on 18 female and 21 male Pima Indian students from the Stewart Indian Boarding School, Carson City, Nevada. Dentitional characteristics were assessed both clinically and by study casts. Cranio-facial analyses were performed by utilizing the skeletal and denture pattern variables suggested by the Downs and Riedel cephalometric analyses.

The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to determine the extent to which the Pima conforms to the Mongoloid master pattern, and (2) to test whether or not significant differences exist between the Pima and other Mongoloid groups which would allow discrimination.

A causal-comparative study was done in a county hospital using twenty subjects to determine if the ''unprepared" primigravida patient in active labor will experience less pain if given instructions to aid relaxation. It was hypothesized that the "unprepared" primigravida patients receiving continuous nurse attendance plus instructions to aid relaxation by (1) breathing techniques, and (2) body positions would show less evidences of pain, tension and anxiety during the first and second stages of labor than the group of patients which received only the continuous nurse attendance.
