Water Supply Sustainability Through Water Banking, Linda I. Gordan Apr 2000

Water Supply Sustainability Through Water Banking, Linda I. Gordan

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Until relatively recently, the preferred approach to satisfying the water needs of growing communities has been to develop untapped supplies. As new water-supply sources have become less accessible, and as developing then has become more expensive and less acceptable environmentally, managing demand and enabling voluntary water reallocation have taken on increasing importance. Demand management and water marketing could be very important in coping with increasing demand and limited supplies, both because they promote efficiency and because they enable a considerable amount of flexibility in water resource management.

Estimates Of Radionuclide Loading To Cochiti Lake From Los Alamos Canyon Using Manual And Automated Sampling, Christopher T. Mclean

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Los Alamos National Laboratory has a long-standing program of sampling storm water runoff inside the Laboratory boundaries. In 1995, the Laboratory started collecting the samples using automated storm water sampling stations; prior to this time the samples were collected manually. The Laboratory has also been periodically collecting sediment samples from Cochiti Lake. This paper presents the data for Pu-238 and Pu-239 bound to the sediments for Los Alamos Canyon storm water runoff and compares the sampling types by mass loading and as a percentage of the sediment deposition to Cochiti Lake.

Special Event Recycling: The Future Of Unlv's Recycling Program, Katherine A. Baker Apr 2000

Special Event Recycling: The Future Of Unlv's Recycling Program, Katherine A. Baker

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The current recycling program on the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) campus does not have a special event recycling aspect. The purpose of this study was to develop a special event recycling program and make recommendations of how to effectively implement it on the UNLV campus. In order to develop this special event recycling program data was collected through surveys and a pilot study. The data collected was then used to formulate recommendations. Recycling two different kinds of events, a walk and a concert tested those recommendations. Waste stream analyses were done on each event. The waste stream diversion …

Dynamic Fluvial Systems And Gravel Progradation In The Himalayan Foreland, Nicholas Brozovic, Douglas W. Burbank Mar 2000

Dynamic Fluvial Systems And Gravel Progradation In The Himalayan Foreland, Nicholas Brozovic, Douglas W. Burbank

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Although the large-scale stratigraphy of many terrestrial foreland basins is punctuated by major episodes of gravel progradation, the relationships of such facies to hinterland tectonism and climate change are often unclear. Structural reentrants provide windows into older and more proximal parts of the foreland than are usually exposed, and thus provide key insights to earlier phases of foreland evolution. Our magnetostratigraphic studies show that, although the major lithofacies preserved within the Himachal Pradesh structural reentrant in northwestern India resemble Neogene facies in Pakistan, they have a much greater temporal and spatial variability. From 11.5 to 7 Ma, major facies boundaries …

No set of issues has tended to separate economists and ecologists, especially in the mind of the public, more than those surrounding the linkages between economic growth, human carrying capacity, and the environment. The general lack of interest among the majority of economists in problems of the environment and a parallel lack of interest among the majority of ecologists in economic issues, combined with a lack of dialogue between the two groups, has allowed extreme positions to take hold in the public debate and to influence policy to an inordinate degree.

To Who Or What Do We Owe Sustainable Development? A Search For An Ethical Framework For Sustainable Development, Mia Soderlund Jan 2000

To Who Or What Do We Owe Sustainable Development? A Search For An Ethical Framework For Sustainable Development, Mia Soderlund

Theses

This thesis focuses on the ethical dimension of sustainable development as described in the Bruntland report. According to this report, we do have certain moral obligations to future generations. This thesis asks whether traditional moral philosophy, such as utilitarian and contractarian theories, can justify moral obligations to future generations, and if they can serve as ethical frameworks for sustainable development.

The basic idea with sustainable development is to create a balance between society, the environment and the economy. If the environment is ascribed instrumental value, which is the case with traditional moral philosophy then there is no balance, because its …

A Comparison Of Field-Delineated Wetlands To The New Jersey Freshwater Wetland Maps, David P. Moskowitz Jan 2000

A Comparison Of Field-Delineated Wetlands To The New Jersey Freshwater Wetland Maps, David P. Moskowitz

Theses

A comparison of the New Jersey Freshwater Wetland maps to field-delineated wetlands was undertaken to assess the accuracy of the Freshwater Wetland maps. The evaluation revealed substantial differences in the amount of wetland acreage on the Freshwater Wetland maps compared to field-verified wetlands. Forty study sites comprising 21,877 acres (8,854h) were evaluated. Of these, twenty-seven were overmapped (more wetland acreage than was field-verified), and thirteen were undermapped. Forty-three percent had mapping discrepancies at or above fifty percent; when modified land designations were included as wetlands, the number of sites at this threshold increased to fifty percent.

Managing Population-Environment Systems: Problems Of Institutional Design, Geoffrey Mcnicoll Jan 2000

Managing Population-Environment Systems: Problems Of Institutional Design, Geoffrey Mcnicoll

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In population–environment systems human activity is inherently part of the system rather than something to be minimized in order to maintain or restore “natural” environmental conditions. Issues arising in managing such systems are discussed in this paper. The system’s boundaries must be identified, defining its human participants and its ecological content. Procedures for monitoring demographic and environmental change in the system must be set up and consensus must be reached on how to evaluate that change.

Fisheries Research Report No. 118 - A Study Into Western Australia's Open Access And Wetline Fisheries, F Crowe, W Lehre, R C J Lenanton

Fisheries research reports

Western Australia's wetline fishery potentially includes every licensed fishing boat in the State and encompasses a number of inter-relationships between various boats and commercial fisheries. This study covers the 'wetline' or open access fishery, which encompasses those activities associated with the unrestricted Western Australian fishing boat licence (FBL). The activities associated with this fishery involve any commercial fishing which is not covered by fisheries legislation.

A separate section entitled 'So you want to go wetlining?' is provided at page 101 as an easy reference guide to industry and others interested in wetline fishing. It is recommended that it be read …

An Investigation Of Environmental Management Systems Motivations And Firm Performance, Robert Sroufe, Steven A. Melnyk, Frank L. Montabon, Roger Calantone Nov 1999

An Investigation Of Environmental Management Systems Motivations And Firm Performance, Robert Sroufe, Steven A. Melnyk, Frank L. Montabon, Roger Calantone

Frank L. Montabon

There are many of issues associated with Environmental Management Systems (EMS). One attempt to overcome these issues can be found in the development of IS0 14000. In this paper, a hypothesized model of the motivations influencing the decision to seek IS0 14000 certification and the relationship to firm performance is examined. The hypothesized model is tested through the use of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results identify positive relationships between uncertainty and the motivations to seek EMS certification. A positive relationship is shown between the status of a firm’s EMS, the environmental options a firm will explore. Finally, a positive …

Iso 14000: Assessing Its Perceived Impact On Corporate Performance, Frank L. Montabon, Steven A. Melnyk, Robert Sroufe, Roger J. Calantone

Frank L. Montabon

The IS0 14000 environmental standard is a relatively recent development in Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing (ERM). It applies to environmental systems and processes the same approach used by its predecessor, the IS0 9000 quality standards. Being relatively new, there are numerous questions regarding the impact of this new standard both on the corporate environmental management system and corporate performance. This paper addresses some of these questions, by drawing on data generated by a large-scale survey of American managers. The results indicate that, even though IS0 14000 has achieved relatively limited acceptance, there is strong evidence to indicate that this standard can …

Investigating The Linkage Between Total Quality Management And Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing, Sime Curkovic, Steve Melnyk, Rob Handfield, Frank L. Montabon, Robert Sroufe

Frank L. Montabon

This paper explicitly examines the relationship that exists between Total Quality Management (TQM) and Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing (ERM) systems. It has been presumed in numerous past studies that such a relationship does exist. It has been argued that those firms that have successfuhy implemented a TQM system are better positioned to successfully implement an ERM system. This relationship, however, has not yet been statistically and empirically evaluated. In this study, the authors evaluate this relationship using a large-scale survey of plant managers as the data source and Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling as the statistical tools. The study …

Protection Of The New York City Water Supply Land Development Threats And The Programs To Control Them, Werner Mueller Aug 1999

Protection Of The New York City Water Supply Land Development Threats And The Programs To Control Them, Werner Mueller

Theses

The Surface Water Treatment Rule under the Safe Drinking Water Act requires that all surface water sources used for drinking water must be filtered, unless the purveyor can demonstrate that the water is of such high quality that filtration is not required. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) operates the New York City water supply system and is taking actions to ensure that the water supplied from the Catskill -- Delaware system remains of high enough quality to maintain an avoidance of filtration determination granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). New watershed rules and regulations have …

Fisheries Research Report No. 115 - Statistical Analysis Of Gascoyne Region Recreational Fishing Study July 1996, Neil R. Sumner, Richard A. Steckis

Fisheries research reports

A survey of recreational fishers in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia was conducted in July 1996 to provide information required by fisheries managers. Catch rates, attitudinal, demographic and economic information from boat-based and shore-based fishers was collected by Fisheries Officers. Pink snapper (Pagrus auratus) was the primary species caught by boatbased recreational fishers in the region. Various species of whiting were the predominant catch from shore-based anglers. Most fishers interviewed (80%) supported the introduction of an upper limit on the amount of fish and fillets that a person could take away from the Gascoyne region for personal or family …

Fisheries Research Report No. 114 - The Western Australian Scallop Industry, D C. Harris, L M. Joll, R A. Watson

Fisheries research reports

Five separate commercial fisheries target the saucer scallop, Amusium balloti (Bernadi 1861) in Western Australian waters. While the average annual catch from these fisheries is around 600 tonnes of scallop meat, past catches have been highly variable with annual landings ranging from 150 to 4,400 tonnes of meat worth between $2 and $59 million. Consequently, scallops represent one of the larger single-species fisheries operating in Western Australia (WA).

A. balloti has a distribution spanning most of the WA coast, from Broome in the north around to Esperance in the south. Despite this extensive distribution, saucer scallops tend to be restricted …
