Harmonics And Flicker Levels At A Sub-Transmission Substation: A Measurement Experience, D Robinson, Victor Gosbell, Sarath Perera, N Browne
Associate Professor Sarath Perera
Proactive monitoring of power quality disturbance levels by electricity utilities is vital to allow cost-effective mitigation when disturbances are perceived to be approaching planning levels and also to protect the security of customer installations. Ensuring that disturbance levels are within limits at the HV and EHV points of supply of the network is essential if satisfactory levels downstream are to be maintained. This paper presents discussion on a power quality monitoring campaign performed at the sub-transmission point of supply of a distribution network with the objective of benchmarking background disturbance levels prior to modifications to the substation and to ensure …
An Application Of Quadratic Functions To Australian Government Policy On Funding Schools, R. Nillsen
An Application Of Quadratic Functions To Australian Government Policy On Funding Schools, R. Nillsen
Professor Rodney Nillsen
In the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper of 23rd March 2005 the economics writer Ross Gittins argued that the funding arrangements for private schools in Australia positively encourage parents to move their children from the state system to the private system. The Federal minister, Dr Brendan Nelson, responded by saying that the policy of subsidising pupils who go to a private school results in taxpayer savings of $4 billion. However, the minister's response did not address the extent to which more funds could possibly be saved by having a different subsidy from the one currently offered by the government. Now, there …

Perceptions Of A Gender-Inclusive Curriculum Amongst Australian Information And Communications Technology Academics, Tony Koppi, Madeleine Roberts, Golshah Naghdy
Associate Professor Golshah Naghdy
The lack of female enrolments in ICT is widely recognised and has prompted a range of strategies to attract more women, most of which do not include curriculum changes at any level. Research suggests that there are aspects of the ICT curriculum that could appeal to females, particularly in relation to benefits to society and humanity in general, and that including these considerations in the curriculum would be of interest to all students. The perceptions of a gender-inclusive ICT curriculum in Australia have been ascertained from a survey and forum discussions of ICT academic managers and leaders of ICT learning …
Shape Vq-Based Adaptive Predictive Lossless Image Coder, Jiazhao Wang, Philip Ogunbona, Golshah Naghdy
Shape Vq-Based Adaptive Predictive Lossless Image Coder, Jiazhao Wang, Philip Ogunbona, Golshah Naghdy
Associate Professor Golshah Naghdy
A new shape adaptive predictive lossless image coder is proposed. Three classes of block shapes are delineated with associated “optimum” predctors. Each image is partitioned into sub-blocks that are classified into one of the three classes using vector quantisation. The encoder then employs the predictor corresponding to the class of the block under consideration. Performance evaluation of the proposed coder in comparison with four other lossless coders includmg lossless JPEG indicates its superiority.
Lifespan Theorem For Constrained Surface Diffusion Flows, James Mccoy, Glen Wheeler, Graham Williams
Lifespan Theorem For Constrained Surface Diffusion Flows, James Mccoy, Glen Wheeler, Graham Williams
Dr James McCoy
We consider closed immersed hypersurfaces in R^3 and R^4 evolving by a class of constrained surface diffusion flows. Our result, similar to earlier results for the Willmore flow, gives both a positive lower bound on the time for which a smooth solution exists and a small upper bound on a power of the total curvature during this time. By phrasing the theorem in terms of concentration of curvature in the initial surface, our result holds for very general initial data and has applications to further development in asymptotic analysis for these flows.
The Inhabitation Problem For Intersection Types, M. Bunder
The Inhabitation Problem For Intersection Types, M. Bunder
Dr Martin Bunder
In the system lambda ^ of intersection types, without w, the problem as to whether an arbitrary type has an inhabitant, has been shown to be undecidable by Urzyczyn in [9]. For one subsystem of lambda ^, that lacks the ^- introduction rule, the inhabitation problem has been shown to be decidable in Kurata and Takahashi [9]. The natural question that arises is: What other subsystems of lambda ^, have a decidable inhabitation problem? The work in [2], which classifies distinct and inhabitation-distinct subsystems of lambda ^, leads to the extension of the undecidability result to lambda ^ without the …

A Dynamic Platform For Workflow Management Using Web Services: A Hospital Scenario, Joshua Fan, Nantika Prinyapol, Sim Lau
Dr Sim Kim Lau
In this paper, we propose the use of dynamic compilation of web services to support workflow management. Web services related to work practices belong to an organisation will be designed, built and stored in a web services repository. These web services can be shared with multiple functional units within the organisation via the intranet or the internet. Work practice services that were selected will be compiled logically and optimally using the proposed dynamic compilation platform.
Semantic Modeling For Video Content-Based Retrieval Systems, L. Al Safadi, J. Getta
Semantic Modeling For Video Content-Based Retrieval Systems, L. Al Safadi, J. Getta
Dr Janusz Getta
This work proposes a semantic data model for video documents based on the story-line structure powerful enough to express various human interpretations of video documents, and introduces a formal query language for video retrieval that facilitates retrieval of users' heterogeneous queries based on the proposed model. The paper identifies the elementary semantic units, composite semantic units, associations and abstraction mechanisms necessary for symbolic modeling of semantic video contents. The method is independent of presentation media and it has its origins in symbolic modeling systems developed for database and complex software systems design.
A Cryptographic Solution For General Access Control, Y. Kong, Jennifer Seberry, J. Getta, Ping Yu
A Cryptographic Solution For General Access Control, Y. Kong, Jennifer Seberry, J. Getta, Ping Yu
Dr Janusz Getta
As one of the most popular information safeguarding mechanisms, access control is widely deployed in information systems. However, access control approach suffers from a tough problem, i.e. system administrators must be unconditionally trusted. Cryptographic substitutes have been developed to solve the above problem. In particular, hierarchical encryption, as an alternate solution of access control in a hierarchy, has been intensively studied. In this paper, we propose a cryptographic solution for general access control based on Chinese Remainder Theorem. Our solution has two categories: data based solution and key based solution. In contrast to the most recent hierarchical encryption system: Ray, …
A Parameterised Algorithm For Mining Association Rules, N. Denwattana, J. Getta
A Parameterised Algorithm For Mining Association Rules, N. Denwattana, J. Getta
Dr Janusz Getta
A central part of many algorithms for mining association rules in large data sets is a procedure that finds so called frequent itemsets. This paper proposes a new approach to finding frequent itemsets. The approach reduces a number of passes through an input data set and generalises a number of strategies proposed so far. The idea is to analyse a variable number n of itemset lattice levels in p scans through an input data set. It is shown that for certain values of parameters (n,p) this method provides more flexible utilisation of fast access transient memory and faster elimination of …
Global Existence Of Some Infinite Energy Solutions For A Perfect Incompressible Fluid, Ralph Saxton, Feride Tiğlay
Global Existence Of Some Infinite Energy Solutions For A Perfect Incompressible Fluid, Ralph Saxton, Feride Tiğlay
Ralph Saxton
This paper provides results on local and global existence for a class of solutions to the Euler equations for an incompressible, inviscid fluid. By considering a class of solutions which exhibits a characteristic growth at infinity we obtain an initial value problem for a nonlocal equation. We establish local well-posedness in all dimensions and persistence in time of these solutions for three and higher dimensions. We also examine a weaker class of global solutions.

Prediction Of Radiation Pneumonitis By Dose-Volume Histogram Parameters In Lung Cancer--A Systematic Review, George Rodrigues, Michael Lock, David D'Souza, Edward Yu, Jake Van Dyk
Michael Lock
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To perform a systematic review of the predictive ability of various dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters (V(dose), mean lung dose (MLD), and normal tissue complication probability (NTCP)) in the incidence of radiation pneumonitis (RP) caused by external-beam radiation therapy.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Studies assessing the relationship between CT-based DVH reduction parameters and RP rate in radically treated lung cancer were eligible for the review. Synonyms for RP, lung cancer, DVH and its associated parameters (NTCP, V(20), V(30), MLD) were combined in a search strategy involving electronic databases, secondary reference searching, and consultation with experts. Individual or group data …

Technology Assessment Of Automated Atlas Based Segmentation In Prostate Bed Contouring, Jeremiah Hwee, Alexander Louie, Stewart Gaede, Glenn Bauman, David D'Souza, Tracy Sexton, Michael Lock, Belal Ahmad, George Rodrigues
Michael Lock
BACKGROUND: Prostate bed (PB) contouring is time consuming and associated with inter-observer variability. We evaluated an automated atlas-based segmentation (AABS) engine in its potential to reduce contouring time and inter-observer variability.
METHODS: An atlas builder (AB) manually contoured the prostate bed, rectum, left femoral head (LFH), right femoral head (RFH), bladder, and penile bulb of 75 post-prostatectomy cases to create an atlas according to the recent RTOG guidelines. 5 other Radiation Oncologists (RO) and the AABS contoured 5 new cases. A STAPLE contour for each of the 5 patients was generated. All contours were anonymized and sent back to the …
On The Design Of Early Generation Variety Trials With Correlated Data, Brian Cullis, A Smith, N. Coombes
On The Design Of Early Generation Variety Trials With Correlated Data, Brian Cullis, A Smith, N. Coombes
Professor Brian Cullis
This article considers the design of early generation variety trials with a prespecified spatial correlation structure and introduces a new class of partially replicated designs called p-rep designs in which the plots of standard varieties are replaced by additional plots of test lines. We show how efficient p-rep designs can be readily generated using the modified Reactive TABU search algorithm. The expected and realized genetic gain of p-rep and grid plot designs is compared in a simulation study.

Post-Release Mortality Of Angled Sand Mullet (Myxus Elongatus: Mugilidae), Matt Broadhurst, Paul Butcher, Brian Cullis
Professor Brian Cullis
Grey mullets (Mugilidae) are important to recreational fisheries throughout the developed world. In Australia, several species are angled and then released in large numbers; all with virtually unknown fate. In response to the need for such data to facilitate effective stock management, this study sought to quantify the post-release mortality and key causal factors for sand mullet (Myxus elongatus). A total of 125 fish were conventionally angled, and then released along with 50 controls into floating cages in a south eastern Australian estuary, where they were monitored for four days. Five treatment fish died, providing a non-significant mortality of 4%. …

Resilience Of Inshore, Juvenile Snapper Pagrus Auratus To Angling And Release, Matt Broadhurst, Paul Butcher, Karina Hall, Brian Cullis, Shane Mcgrath
Professor Brian Cullis
This study assessed the mortality of 157 snapper Pagrus auratus (9–29 cm, total length, LT) after being conventionally angled and then released into cages (along with 48 controls) for 4 days off south-eastern Australia. Fatalities were restricted to 12 angled fish (7·6%) and mostly attributed to the ingestion of hooks and especially their subsequent removal, which caused substantial blood loss and immediate death. Hook ingestion was significantly biased towards smaller fish (LT) and attributed to a lower chance of anglers initially detecting these individuals on the line (allowing them to consume more of the baits). While mortalities might be reduced …
The Analysis Of Crop Cultivar Breeding And Evaluation Trials: An Overview Of Current Mixed Model Approaches, A Smith, Brian Cullis, R Thompson
The Analysis Of Crop Cultivar Breeding And Evaluation Trials: An Overview Of Current Mixed Model Approaches, A Smith, Brian Cullis, R Thompson
Professor Brian Cullis
The analysis of series of crop variety trials has a long history with the earliest approaches being based on ANOVA methods. Kempton (1984) discussed the inadequacies of this approach, summarized the alternatives available at that time and noted that all of these approaches could be classified as multiplicative models. Recently, mixed model approaches have become popular for the analysis of series of variety trials. There are numerous reasons for their use, including the ease with which incomplete data (not all varieties in all trials) can be handled and the ability to appropriately model within-trial error variation. Currently, the most common …
Ardez: A Low Power Asymmetric Rendezvous Mac For Sensor Networks, K. Chin, Mohammed Raad
Ardez: A Low Power Asymmetric Rendezvous Mac For Sensor Networks, K. Chin, Mohammed Raad
Associate Professor Kwan-Wu Chin
We present a rendezvous based medium access control (MAC), culled ArDeZ, for use in sensor networks. ArDeZ is a TDMA based medium access scheme that does not rely on strict time slot positioning and assignments, making ArDeZ easily deployable in large sensor networks without having to adhere to strict time slot boundaries. ArDeZ establishes two independent peer-to-peer time channels between nodes, and these channels do not necessarily have the same duty cycle. Each channel has a set of rendezvous periods associated with it that are generated from a seed exchanged during the setup process. Further, the duration and frequency of …

A Novel Ieee 802.15.3 Cta Sharing Protocol For Supporting Vbr Streams, Kwan-Wu Chin, Darryn Lowe
Associate Professor Kwan-Wu Chin
The IEEE 802.15.3 MAC enables high-rate communications between devices in a wireless personal area network and has good support for applications requiring quality of service (QoS). To meet applications' QoS requirements, such as delay and jitter, the channel time allocation (CTA) scheduler plays an important role in sizing and positioning CTAs within each super-frame. In this paper, we first present a novel CTA sharing protocol, called VBR-MCTA that enables the sharing of CTAs belonging to streams with the same group identity. This allows our protocol to exploit the statistical characteristics of variable bit rate (VBR) streams by giving unused time …

Vehicle Tracking Using Projective Particle Filter, Azeddine Beghdadi, Philippe Bouttefroy, Son Lam Phung, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Professor Salim Bouzerdoum
This article introduces a new particle filtering approach for object tracking in video sequences. The projective particle filter uses a linear fractional transformation, which projects the trajectory of an object from the real world onto the camera plane, thus providing a better estimate of the object position. In the proposed particle filter, samples are drawn from an importance density integrating the linear fractional transformation. This provides a better coverage of the feature space and yields a finer estimate of the posterior density. Experiments conducted on traffic video surveillance sequences show that the variance of the estimated trajectory is reduced, resulting …

Big Data Education: 3 Steps Universities Must Take, Jennifer Priestley
Jennifer L. Priestley
By now, we all know that the "sexiest job of the 21st century" is the data scientist. A scan of articles and blogs describing data scientists and their raw material -- big data -- reveals several "sexy" themes. First, data is ubiquitous, big and coming at us with increasing velocity. Second, traditional tools that have been used to extract and analyze 20th century data don't work with big data. Third, incredibly few people have the skills necessary to translate this tsunami of data into meaningful information -- making them the hotshots in the job market.

Electrochemical Deposition Of Porous Vox And Mno2 Nanowires On Stainless Steel Mesh For Flexible Supercapacitors, Shulei Chou, Jiazhao Wang, Hua Liu, S Dou
Shulei Chou
Porous vanadium oxide (VOx) and MnO2 nanowires were synthesized by an electrochemical deposition method using stainless steel mesh as substrate. The as-prepared porous VOx and MnO2 nanowire films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) results show that the MnO2 nanowire film shows specific capacitance of 195, 170, 158, and 91 F g-1 at scan rates of 5, 10, 20, and 50 mV s-1, respectively. The porous VOx film displays specific capacitance of 152, 124, 99, and 76 F g …

Enhanced Reversible Lithium Storage In A Nanosize Silicon/Graphene Composite, Shulei Chou, Jiazhao Wang, Mohammad Choucair, Hua Liu, John Stride, S Dou
Shulei Chou
Si/graphene composite was prepared by simply mixing of commercially available nanosize Si and graphene. Electrochemical tests show that the Si/graphene composite maintains a capacity of 1168 mAh g-1 and an average coulombic efficiency of 93% up to 30 cycles. EIS indicates that the Si/graphene composite electrode has less than 50% of the charge-transfer resistance compared with nanosize Si electrode, evidencing the enhanced ionic conductivity of Si/graphene composite. The enhanced cycling stability is attributed to the fact that the Si/graphene composite can accommodate large volume charge of Si and maintain good electronic contact.

One-Step Spray Pyrolysis Synthesized Cuo-Carbon Composite Combined With Carboxymethyl Cellulose Binder As Anode For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Chao Zhong, Jia-Zhao Wang, Xuan-Wen Gao, Shulei Chou, Konstantin Konstantinov, Hua Liu
Shulei Chou
Copper oxide-carbon composite with hollow sphere structure has been synthesized by a one-step spray pyrolysis method and tested as anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Different analytical methods, including X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis, and systematic electrochemical tests were performed. The results demonstrate that the CuO-carbon composite in conjunction with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) binder has an excellent electrochemical performance, with a capacity of 577 mAh g-1 up to 100 cycles. The usage of the water soluble binder, CMC, not only obviously improves the electrochemical performance, but also makes the electrode fabrication process much easier and …

Application Of Foreland Basin Detrital-Zircon Geochronology To The Reconstruction Of The Southern And Central Appalachian Orogen, Hyunmee Park, David Barbeau, Alan Rickenbaker, Denise Bachmann-Krug, George Gehrels
David L Barbeau Jr
We report the U-Pb age distribution of detrital zircons collected from central and southern Appalachian foreland basin strata, which record changes of sediment provenance in response to the different phases of the Appalachian orogeny. Taconic clastic wedges have predominantly ca. 1080–1180 and ca. 1300–1500 Ma zircons, whereas Acadian clastic wedges contain abundant Paleozoic zircons and minor populations of 550–700 and 1900–2200 Ma zircons consistent with a Gondwanan affinity. Alleghanian clastic wedges contain large populations of ca. 980–1080 Ma and ca. 2700 Ma and older Archean zircons and fewer Paleozoic zircons than occur in the Acadian clastic wedges. The abundance of …

Slab Window Migration And Terrane Accretion Preserved By Low‐Temperature Thermochronology Of A Magmatic Arc, Northern Antarctic Peninsula, William Guenthner, David Barbeau, Peter Reiners, Stuart Thomson
David L Barbeau Jr
Existing paleogeographic reconstructions indicate that the northern Antarctic Peninsula was central to several Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic events that have implications for ocean circulation and continental margin evolution. To evaluate the exhumational record of these processes, we collected new samples and measured fission track and (U‐Th)/He cooling ages of apatite and zircon from 13 Jurassic and Cretaceous granitoids in western Graham Land between the northern tip of the peninsula and the Antarctic Circle. Apatite He data reveal distinct ages and systematic age patterns north and south of Anvers Island, near the midpoint of the study area: To the south, apatite …

Detrital-Zircon Geochronology Of The Metasedimentary Rocks Of North-Western Graham Land, David Barbeau, Justin Davis, Kendra Murray, Victor Valencia, George Gehrels, Khandaker Zahid, David Gombosi
David L Barbeau Jr
Metasedimentary rocks constitute an important but comparatively poorly understood part of the Antarctic Peninsula. Herein we report single-grain U-Pb detrital-zircon ages from samples of the Trinity Peninsula and Botany Bay Groups of north-western Graham Land. All studied samples are dominated by a large and narrowly defined population of late Palaeozoic zircons. Significant early–middle Palaeozoic and minor Neoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic sub-populations constitute the majority of pre-Carboniferous grains. These detrital-zircon age populations are consistent with sediment derivation entirely from western Gondwana sources. Despite the clear Gondwana signatures, our data suggest that the Trinity Peninsula Group province was either a parautochthonous peri-Gondwanan terrane …
