Parallel Writing On Zirconium Nitride Thin Films By Local Oxidation Nanolithography, N. Farkas, J. Comer, G. Zhang, Edward Evans, R. Ramsier, S. Wight, J. Dagata

Edward A Evans

Parallel pattern transfer of submicrometer-scale oxide features onto zirconium nitride thin films is reported. The oxidation reaction was verified by Auger microprobe analysis and secondary ion mass spectrometry. Oxide features of similar to70 nm in height can be formed and selectively etched in a dilute aqueous hydrogen fluoride solution. This provides an interesting route to potential new applications for high-melting point, biocompatible surfaces that possess small feature sizes with controlled geometries. High-Voltage Parallel Writing On Iron Nitride Thin Films, N. Farkas, J. Ehrman, Edward Evans, R. Ramsier, J. Dagata

Edward A Evans

We report large area patterning of sputter-deposited FeN thin films by a high-voltage parallel writing technique that was recently developed to modify ZrN surfaces. Systematically patterned 15-100-nm-thick FeN films consisting of features with well-defined sizes and shapes are obtained by applying high dc voltages between a stamp and the samples. During the process the oxide dissolves, exposing the substrate beneath. This controlled breakdown eliminates the need for any postexposure etching. The single-step imprinting method presented here provides an emerging route to fabricate isolated FeN geometrical structures on silicon substrates for magnetic applications. Palladium Nanoparticles Supported By Alumina Nanofibers Synthesized By Electrospinning, S. Park, S. Bhargava, E. Bender, George Chase, R. Ramsier

George G Chase

Palladium nanoparticles supported by alumina nanofibers have been successfully synthesized by electrospinning using palladium chloride incorporated into a solution of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and aluminum acetate. Palladium agglomerate sizes and the surface morphology of the electrospun nanofibers were determined by transmission electron microscopy. Palladium nanoparticles appeared to be well dispersed within the electrospun nanofiber structure. X-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman scattering spectroscopy techniques were used to identify the crystalline form and distinguish between oxidized and metallic palladium particles after heating and hydrogenation.

Generating A Dynamic Synthetic Population - Using An Age-Structured Two-Sex Model For Household Dynamics, Mohammad-Reza Namazi-Rad, Payam Mokhtarian, Pascal Perez

Payam Mokhtarian

Generating a reliable computer-simulated synthetic population is necessary for knowledge processing and decision-making analysis in agent-based systems in order to measure, interpret and describe each target area and the human activity patterns within it. In this paper, both synthetic reconstruction (SR) and combinatorial optimisation (CO) techniques are discussed for generating a reliable synthetic population for a certain geographic region (in Australia) using aggregated- and disaggregated-level information available for such an area. A CO algorithm using the quadratic function of population estimators is presented in this paper in order to generate a synthetic population while considering a two-fold nested structure for …

Knowledge Management In An Organisational Climate Of Uncertainty And Change: A Longitudinal Case Study Of An Australian University, Denise Gengatharen Apr 2014

Knowledge Management In An Organisational Climate Of Uncertainty And Change: A Longitudinal Case Study Of An Australian University, Denise Gengatharen

Denise E Gengatharen

Universities are in the knowledge business and are expected to be at the forefront of knowledge management (KM). However, KM in a university is complex given the diversity of stakeholder groups. This is exacerbated in the Australian context by the changing climate of rationalisation, corporatisation and marketisation universities faced in the past decade. This paper investigates KM strategies in an Australian university to uncover barriers to knowledge-sharing among academics. Although the organisational infrastructure supports KM, many academics have not actively embraced it. One reason is that they struggle with KM for operational excellence in the increasing administrative aspects of the …

Shawn C. Burdette

Molecular hybrids of TQEN (N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis(2-quinolylmethyl)ethylenediamine) and EDTA (ethylenediamine-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid) were examined as fluorescent Zn2+ sensors. Upon the addition of Zn2+, N,N-BQENDA (N,N-bis(2-quinolylmethyl)ethylenediamine-N′,N′-diacetic acid, 1a) exhibits a 30-fold emission enhancement at 456 nm (λex = 315 nm, ϕZn = 0.018) in buffer (HEPES, pH = 7.5, 100 mM KCl). The fluorescence enhancement is Zn2+-specific as Cd2+ induces much smaller increases (ICd/I0 = 5 and ICd/IZn = 16%). These spectroscopic properties, as well as the excellent water-solubility, represent a significant improvement compared to the parent TQEN sensor (ϕZn = 0.007, ICd/IZn = 64%). The isoquinoline analog N,N-1-isoBQENDA (N,N-bis(1-isoquinolylmethyl)ethylenediamine-N′,N′-diacetic acid, 1b) possesses a …

Stratigraphic Distribution And Suggested Evolution Of Dendroid Graptolites From The Silurian Of Eastern Australia, Barrie Rickards, Anthony Wright

Anthony Wright

Five evolutionary lineages are proposed for Silurian species of the benthic dendroid graptolite genus Dictyonema, based largely on the exceptional eastern Australian records of the genus, comprising at least 25 species. These are: A, the delicatulum lineage with bifurcating ventral autothecal apertural spines; B, the paululum lineage with single ventral apertural spines or processes; C, the elegans lineage with isolated thecal apertures ± processes; D, the sherrardae lineage with dorsal apertural processes; and E, the venustum lineage with simple autothecal apertures. Brief comments are also made on other dendroid genera occurring in Australian strata, namely: Acanthograptus, Koremagraptus, Callograptus, Dendrograptus, Stelechocladia, …

You've Got Mail: Accountability And End User Attitudes To Email Management., Mark Brogan, Susan Vreugdenburg

Mark Brogan

In a pioneering ethnographic study of end user responses to the problem of ‘information overload’ Whittaker and Sidner (1996) found that the design of systems primarily as methods of asynchronous communication, posed significant information management problems for users. In another contemporaneous study, David Bearman (1993) extended understanding of the implications of end user email management behavior by identifying significant accountability implications for organizations arising from the use of email. Recent case studies in the United States and Australia (Leopold, 2008; Raleigh Chronicle, 2008; Strutt, and Taylor, 2007) have once again focused attention on the accountability consequences for Government of email …

In The Shadow Of The Cloud - Technology In The Rim Workspace, Mark Brogan, David Roberts

Mark Brogan

In 2008 RIM Professionals Australasia conducted its first Technology Survey, on which the authors reported in a previous issue. At the time, it was recognised that the greatest value to professionals would come from a longitudinal study, enabling 'flash in the pan' innovation to be sorted from durable change that has implications for the work and education of RIM professionals. This article - in two parts in this issue of iQ and the next - reports results from the RIM Professionals Australasia 2010 Technology Survey, which has enabled a longitudinal view of data first gathered in 2008.

Dark Matter As An Integral Part Of An Alternative Gravity Model, Hontas Farmer Apr 2014

Dark Matter As An Integral Part Of An Alternative Gravity Model, Hontas Farmer

Hontas F Farmer

The purpose of this paper is to reconcile observations of dark matter effects on the galactic and cosmological scales with the null results of astroparticle physics observations such as CDMS and ANTARES. This paper will also provide a candidate unified and simpler mathematical formulation for the Lambda CDM model. Unification is achieved by a combination of the f(R) approach, with the standard LCDM approach and inflationary models. It is postulated that dark matter-energy fields depend on the Ricci curvature R. Standard methods of classical and quantum field theory on curved space time are applied. When this model is treated as …

Disk-Outflow Models As Applied To High Mass Star Forming Regions Through Methanol And Water Maser Observations, Hontas Farmer Apr 2014

Disk-Outflow Models As Applied To High Mass Star Forming Regions Through Methanol And Water Maser Observations, Hontas Farmer

Hontas F Farmer

As the recent publication by Breen et al (2013) found Class II methanol masers are exclusively associated with high mass star forming regions. Based on the positions of the Class I and II methanol and H2O masers, UC H~II regions and 4.5~μm infrared sources, and the center velocities (vLSR) of the Class I methanol and H2O masers, compared to the vLSR of the Class II methanol masers, we propose three disk-outflow models that may be traced by methanol masers. In all three models, we have located the Class II methanol maser near the protostar, and the Class I methanol maser …

A Probabilistic Predictive Model For Residential Mobility In Australia, Mohammad-Reza Namazi-Rad, Nagesh Shukla, Albert Munoz, Payam Mokhtarian, Jun Ma

Payam Mokhtarian

Household relocation modelling is an integral part of the planning process as residential movements influence the demand for community facilities and services. Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) created the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) program to collect reliable longitudinal data on family and household dynamics. Socio-demographic information (such as general health situation and well-being, lifestyle changes, residential mobility, income and welfare dynamics, and labour market dynamics) is collected from the sampled individuals and households. The data shows that approximately 17% of Australian households and 13% of couple families in the HILDA sample …

Social Sensing For Urban Crisis Management: The Case Of Singapore Haze, Philips Kokoh Prasetyo, Ming Gao, Ee Peng Lim, Christie N. Scollon

Ming Gao

Sensing social media for trends and events has become possible as increasing number of users rely on social media to share information. In the event of a major disaster or social event, one can therefore study the event quickly by gathering and analyzing social media data. One can also design appropriate responses such as allocating resources to the affected areas, sharing event related information, and managing public anxiety. Past research on social event studies using social media often focused on one type of data analysis (e.g., hashtag clusters, diffusion of events, influential users, etc.) on a single social media data …

Purchasing Nonprescription Contraceptives: The Underlying Structure Of A Multi-Item Scale, Chris Manolis, Robert Winsor, Sheb True Mar 2014

Purchasing Nonprescription Contraceptives: The Underlying Structure Of A Multi-Item Scale, Chris Manolis, Robert Winsor, Sheb True

Robert D. Winsor

The authors develop a multi-item scale measuring attitudes associated with purchasing nonprescription contraceptives. Although contraceptives represent a common as well as consequential purchase for many people, published research has not addressed measures of attitudes associated with this purchase decision. A scale development method is presented measuring both male and female consumer attitudes toward purchasing contraceptives. Ultimately, a multi-item scale demonstrating a high degree of invariance across 2 samples (men and women) is developed.
