Spectroscopic Analysis Of Therapeutic Drugs., Laura Perdisatt, Christine O'Connor, Samar Moqadasi, Luke O'Neill Jan 2010

Spectroscopic Analysis Of Therapeutic Drugs., Laura Perdisatt, Christine O'Connor, Samar Moqadasi, Luke O'Neill

Conference Papers

The aim of this project was to investigate the photochemistry of three new Ruthenium (II) complexes as possible therapeutics and their associated ligands. The objectives were to use the following spectroscopic techniques: Absorption, Emission and Raman spectroscopy. Luminescent lifetime measurements were obtained by laser studies (Nd:YAG laser and Time coupled single photon counting (TCSPC) ).

Using Twitter To Demonstrate Basic Concepts From Network Analysis, Matt Bogard Jan 2010

Using Twitter To Demonstrate Basic Concepts From Network Analysis, Matt Bogard

Economics Faculty Publications

Social network analysis focuses on finding patterns in interactions between people or entities. These patterns may be described in the form of a network. Network analysis in general has many applications including models of student integration and persistence, business to business supply chains, terrorist cells, or analysis of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. This presentation provides a reference for basic concepts from social network analysis with examples using tweets from Twitter.

Comic Books That Teach Mathematics, Bruce Kessler Jul 2009

Comic Books That Teach Mathematics, Bruce Kessler

Bruce Kessler

During the 2008--2009 academic year, the author embarked on an extremely non-standard curriculum path: developing comic books with embedded mathematics appropriate for 3rd through 6th grade students. With the help of an education professor to measure impact, an elementary-school principal, and talented undergraduate illustrators, this project came to fruition and the comics were implemented in elementary classrooms at Cumberland Trace Elementary in the Warren County School System in Bowling Green, Kentucky. This talk gives the motivation for the idea, introduces the characters, and how the comics integrated the math content into the stories.

Computational Thinking (Ct): On Weaving It In, Paul Curzon, Joan Peckham, Harriet G. Taylor, Amber Settle, Eric Roberts

Computing offers essential problem-solving tools needed for contemporary challenges. The role of computing in education, and appropriate pathways for modern students, are of concern [10]. Educators recognize the importance of improving information technology (IT) skills and fluency, and studies have developed guidelines [7][8], but the analytical concepts and tools of computing have benefits beyond IT fluency. CT [12] continues earlier discussions on the nature of computing, [3][9]. This has helped the computing community to strengthen definition of the problem solving skills that computing brings to society, through education, outreach, and research. Recently, CT has served as a basis for several …

Intra-Annual Comparison Of Mesospheric Gravity Waves Over Halley And Rothera Stations, Antarctica., Jonathan R. Pugmire, Mike J. Taylor, Kim Nielsen May 2009

Intra-Annual Comparison Of Mesospheric Gravity Waves Over Halley And Rothera Stations, Antarctica., Jonathan R. Pugmire, Mike J. Taylor, Kim Nielsen

Jonathan Pugmire

As part of a collaborative program between British Antarctic Survey and Utah State University, we present an intra-annual study of short-period, mesospheric gravity wave events observed over Antarctica in the near infrared OH emission. The measurements were made using an all-sky airglow imager operated at either Halley Station on the Brunt Ice Shelf, or Rothera Station, situated on the Antarctic Peninsula. A total of six austral winter seasons have been analyzed (2000-2006). This study comprises the first detailed winter seasonal investigation of short-period mesospheric gravity waves at high-Antarctic latitudes. Distributions of their observed wave parameters were found to be similar …

Copper(Ii) Catalyzed Aminomethylation Of Alkanes With Amine N-Oxides Via C-H Bond Activation, Matthew Cipolla May 2009

Copper(Ii) Catalyzed Aminomethylation Of Alkanes With Amine N-Oxides Via C-H Bond Activation, Matthew Cipolla

Senior Honors Projects

The formation of a C-C bond via double C-H bond activation is very challenging. There are only a few examples of such a coupling having been accomplished. Only one of these examples consists of a coupling of two sp3 hybridized carbons. I set out to reproduce this coupling, using substrates that would have a functional application to the synthesis of appealing molecules such as bioactive molecules. Cyclohexane and trimethylamine N-oxide were successfully coupled via a double C-H bond activation, catalyzed by copper(II). Current research now involves the coupling of toluene with trimethylamine N-oxide. As this work progresses, more interesting and …

Synthesis And Spectroscopic Analysis Of Therapeutic Ru(Ii) Complexes, Samar Moqadasi, Laura Perdisatt, Christine O'Connor, Luke O'Neill

Conference Papers

The aim of this study is to synthesise and characterise new ligands based on a 1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-dione backbone and their respective Ru(II) complexes; Ru(bpy)2mfmp, Ru(bpy)2fmp and Ru(bpy)2NO2-mp as shown in figure 1.The synthesis of the ligands will be discussed and a variety of Ru(II) complexes. A brief insight of the electronic and NMR spectroscopy will be presented along with preliminary photochemical results such as extinction coefficients, quantum yields and luminescence lifetimes. Ruthenium complexes have well established synthetic and photochemical properties.1The objective of this work is to synthesise Ru(II) complexes for the applications of potential therapeutics. In order to establish their uses …

Extreme Eutrophication And Cyanotoxin Levels In Farmington Bay, A Polluted Embayment Of The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli, Gregory Boyer Jan 2009

Extreme Eutrophication And Cyanotoxin Levels In Farmington Bay, A Polluted Embayment Of The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli, Gregory Boyer

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The Great Salt Lake of Utah is surrounded on its eastern and southern shores by 1.4 million people, with projections of 5 million by 2050. Agricultural, industrial and particularly secondary-treated domestic wastes from this population flow primarily into Farmington Bay, a 280 km2 shallow "estuary" with a mean depth near 0.5 m. Fish are rare but bird use is extensive and massive mortalities of waterfowl and shorebirds have occurred in the bay. Phosphorus loading rates of >2 g m-2yr-1 cause hypereutrophic conditions: Secchi depths are usually 0.6 mg/L, mean Chl. a is 179 ug/L and the combined trophic state index …
