Overcoming Visibility Issues In A Small-To-Medium Retailer Using Automatic Identification And Data Capture Technology: An Evolutionary Approach, Dane Hamilton, K. Michael, Samuel F. Wamba May 2009

Overcoming Visibility Issues In A Small-To-Medium Retailer Using Automatic Identification And Data Capture Technology: An Evolutionary Approach, Dane Hamilton, K. Michael, Samuel F. Wamba

Professor Katina Michael

The aim of this paper is to review the inventory control practices of a small-to-medium retailer, in order to identify common challenges these organizations experience with respect to automated data capture (ADC) and the implementation of an enterprise wide information system. The study explores a single case of a hardware store in a regional town of NSW, Australia. Four semi-structured interviews were conducted with employees of a small-to-medium retailer focusing on issues related to inventory control including: delivery discrepancies, the checking and sorting of orders, locating stock and goods, loss prevention, customer purchasing and point of sale processing and replenishment. …

Paradigms For Non-Classical Substitutions, Lawrence Stout, P. Eklund, M. Galan, J. Kortelainen Apr 2009

Paradigms For Non-Classical Substitutions, Lawrence Stout, P. Eklund, M. Galan, J. Kortelainen

Lawrence N. Stout

We will present three paradigms for non-classical substitution. Firstly, we have the classical substitution of variables with terms. This is written in a strict categorical form supporting presentation of the other two paradigms. The second paradigm is substitutions of variables with many-valued sets of terms. These two paradigms are based on functors and monads over the category of sets. The third paradigm is the substitution of many-valued sets of variables with terms over many-valued sets of variables. The latter is based on functors and monads over the category of many-valued sets. This provides a transparency of the underlying categories and …

Interregional Comparison Of Karst Disturbance: West-Central Florida And Southeast Italy, Leslie North Mar 2009

Interregional Comparison Of Karst Disturbance: West-Central Florida And Southeast Italy, Leslie North

Leslie North

The karst disturbance index (KDI) consists of 31 environmental indicators contained within the five broad categories: geomorphology, hydrology, atmosphere, biota, and cultural. The purpose of this research is to apply the KDI to two distinct karst areas, west Florida, USA, and Apulia, Italy. Through its application, the utility of the index can be validated and other important comparisons can be made, such as differences in the karst legislations implemented in each region and the effect of time exposure to human occupation to each karst terrain. Humans have intensively impacted the karst of southeast Italy for thousands of years compared to …

Continuous Glucose Monitoring In Non-Insulin-Using Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes: Acceptability, Feasibility, And Teaching Opportunities, Nancy A. Allen, James A. Fain, Barry Braun, Stuart R. Chipkin Feb 2009

Continuous Glucose Monitoring In Non-Insulin-Using Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes: Acceptability, Feasibility, And Teaching Opportunities, Nancy A. Allen, James A. Fain, Barry Braun, Stuart R. Chipkin

Stuart R. Chipkin

Background: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has the potential to provide useful data for behavioral interventions targeting non–insulin-using, sedentary individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The aims of this study were to describe CGM in terms of (1) feasibility and acceptability and (2) dietary- and exerciseteaching events. Methods: Cross-sectional data were analyzed from 27 non–insulin-using adults with T2DM who wore CGM for 72 h as part of a larger study on using CGM for exercise counseling in this population. Feasibility data included accuracy of entering daily self-monitored blood glucose (SMBG) readings and events (e.g., meals, exercise), sensor failures, alarms, optimal …

A Hybrid Approach Based On Genetic Algorithms In Conjunction With Statistical Methods For The Diagnosis Of Breast Cancer, Brijesh Verma, Ping Zhang, Kuldeep Kumar

Kuldeep Kumar

This chapter reviews and presents genetic algorithms and statistical methods based approach for early detection and classification of breast cancer using digital mammography. A feature selection using genetic algorithms and statistical methods have been combined and a hybrid system has been developed and tested on a benchmark database. A comparative analysis of the results is included in this chapter.

Katina Michael Giving Evidence As A Board Member Of The Australian Privacy Foundation At The Senate Standing Committee For Legal And Consitutional Affairs (Personal Property Securities Bill 2008), K. Michael

Professor Katina Michael

Senate standing committees, covering every area of government operations, have developed a reputation as the backbone of the Senate’s committee work. Standing committees permit a continuing surveillance of defined fields of government activity, call upon scholarly research and advice and create an awareness of the Senate’s ‘watchdog’ function. There are a number of different kinds of standing committees: domestic, legislative scrutiny, legislative and general purpose, and joint. In this instance, acting in the capacity of an Australia Privacy Foundation (APF) board member, I was granted an invitation to give evidence at the Committee's public hearing which was held on Thursday, …

A Finite Volume Method For Solving Parabolic Equations On Logically Cartesian Curved Surface Meshes, Donna Calhoun, Christiane Helzel Dec 2008

A Finite Volume Method For Solving Parabolic Equations On Logically Cartesian Curved Surface Meshes, Donna Calhoun, Christiane Helzel

Donna Calhoun

We present a second-order, finite-volume scheme for the constant-coefficient diffusion equation on curved, parametric surfaces described via smooth or piecewise smooth mappings on logically Cartesian meshes. Our method does not require analytic metric terms, shows second-order accuracy, can be easily coupled to existing finite-volume solvers for logically Cartesian meshes and handles general mixed boundary conditions. We present numerical results demonstrating the accuracy of the scheme, and then use the scheme to solve advection-reaction-diffusion equations modeling biological pattern formation on surfaces.

Target Finding Time For Microtubules In A Confined Geometry, Mitra Shojania-Feizabadi Dec 2008

Target Finding Time For Microtubules In A Confined Geometry, Mitra Shojania-Feizabadi

Mitra Shojania-Feizabadi

Dynamic instability of microtubules may reach the steady state with exponentially growing or decaying length distribution in a confined geometry such as a cell-like environment. In this brief communication, the target finding time for these microtubules with the stochastic polymerization in a confined geometry is compared with the reversible polymerization. It is shown that the efficiency of microtubules with increasing length distribution at the steady state depends on the location of a target. They are very efficient in finding a target located at the cell cortex, which confirms the significant biological role they play in rapidly reaching the cell cortex …

A Bayesian Approach To Ordinal Outcomes For Neurosurgical Clinical Research., Sally Wood Dec 2008

A Bayesian Approach To Ordinal Outcomes For Neurosurgical Clinical Research., Sally Wood

Sally Wood

The objective of this study is to demonstrate a Bayesian approach for the statistical analysis of neurosurgical data where the investigators have used an ordinal scale for the outcome. A Bayesian approach that uses data augmentation and Gibbs sampling to perform ordinal probit regression is demonstrated in a neurosurgical context. The statistical approach is applied to a regression analysis to examine the relationship between female gender and the outcome of severe traumatic brain injury measured with the Glascow Outcome Scale. The approach is applied to a hierarchical meta-analysis to examine the relationship between age and the outcome from subarachnoid haemorrhage …
