Liquid Crystal Blazed Gratings Formed In A Single-Step Through Photo-Induced Localization Of Polymer Into A Prismatic Structure, Sang Hwa Kim, Liang-Chy Chien

Liang-Chy Chien

A liquid crystal blazed grating having a prismatic polymer microstructure has been developed. The polymer structure is fabricated by photo-induced localization and polymerization of a small concentration of monomer onto one substrate of an electro-optical cell by using ultraviolet light irradiation at 45degrees direction from normal incident. Using this method a periodical one-dimensional pattern with a prismatic shape of polymer can be formed on a one-dimensional pattern-forming state of a cholesteric host. The optical diffraction properties of the grating are evaluated by the application of electric field and light incident angles.

Reading, Writing, And Toxics: Children's Health, Academic Performance, And Environmental Justice In Los Angeles, Manuel Pastor, James Sadd, Rachel Morello-Frosch

James Sadd

A significant body of previous research on environmental justice has demonstrated a disproportionate burden of environmental hazards on low-income and minority residents. In this paper we evaluate spatially indexed data on estimated respiratory and cancer risks associated with exposures to ambient air toxics to show that children of color in the Los Angeles Unified School District suffer potentially disparate health impacts, and that disparities in environmental risks may be associated with diminished school performance -- even after controlling for socioeconomic and demographic covariates that generally explain much of the variation in student scores. Remediating environmental health risks in distressed neighborhoods …

Solid solution series of the type K2Bi8-xSbxSe13, K2-xRbxBi8Se13 as well as K2Bi8Se13-xSx were prepared and the distribution of the atoms (Bi/Sb, K/Rb and Se/S) on different crystallographic sites, the band gaps and their thermoelectric properties were studied. The distribution Se/S appears to be more uniform than the distribution of the Sb and Rb atoms in the β-K2Bi8Se13 structure that shows preference in specific sites in the lattice. Band gap is mainly affected by Sb and S substitution. Seebeck coefficient measurements showed n-type character for of all Se/S members. In the Bi/Sb series an enhancement of p-type character was observed. The …

Biorthogonal Spline Type Wavelets, Tian-Xiao He Dec 2003

Biorthogonal Spline Type Wavelets, Tian-Xiao He

Tian-Xiao He

Let ¢ be an orthonormal scaling function with approximation degree p - 1, and let Bn be the B-spline of order n. Then, spline type scaling functions defined by fn = f * Bn (n = 1, 2, ... ) possess higher approximation order, p+n-1, and compact support. The corresponding biorthogonal wavelet functions are also constructed. This technique is extended to the case of biorthogonal scaling function system. As an application of the method supplied in this paper, one can easily construct a sequence of pairs of biorthogonal spline type scaling functions from one pair of biorthogonal scaling functions or …

An Analog And Mathematical Modeling Resource Catalog For Undergraduate Structural Geology Courses, Phillip Resor, John Stimac, Michelle Cooke, Juliet Crider, Dazhi Jiang, Basil Tikoff, Jamie Toro

Phillip G Resor

The Modeling Structural Processes Working Group of the recent NAGT Workshop: "Teaching Structural Geology in the 21st Century" (TSG21) presents a catalog of models used in the teaching of structural geology to undergraduate students. Structural geology models are simplified constructs of complex earth system processes that have long been known to engage students and enhance their intuition of the deformation of earth materials. We recognize four classes of models: conceptual models, data representation models (including maps, stereonets, three-dimensional renderings, and statistical descriptions), analog models (including experiments with rock and non-rock materials), and mathematical models (including analytical expressions and deterministic or …

Modeling The Optimum Duration Of Antibiotic Prophylaxis In An Anthrax Outbreak, Ron Brookmeyer, Elizabeth Johnson, Robert Bollinger Nov 2003

Modeling The Optimum Duration Of Antibiotic Prophylaxis In An Anthrax Outbreak, Ron Brookmeyer, Elizabeth Johnson, Robert Bollinger

Ron Brookmeyer

A critical consideration in effective and measured public health responses to an outbreak of inhalational anthrax is the optimum duration of antibiotic prophylaxis. We develop a competing-risks model to address the duration of antibiotic prophylaxis and the incubation period that accounts for the risks of spore germination and spore clearance. The model predicts the incubation period distribution, which is confirmed by empirical data. The optimum duration of antibiotic prophylaxis depends critically on the dose of inhaled spores. At high doses, we show that exposed persons would need to remain on antibiotic prophylaxis for at least 4 months, and considerable morbidity …

Statistical Models And Bioterrorism: Application To The U.S. Anthrax Outbreak, Ron Brookmeyer, Natalie Blades

Ron Brookmeyer

In the fall of 2001 an outbreak of inhalational anthrax occurred in the United States that was the result of bioterrorism. Letters contaminated with anthrax spores were sent through the postal system. In response to the outbreak, public health officials treated over 10,000 persons with antibiotic prophylaxis in the hopes of preventing further morbidity and mortality. No persons receiving the antibiotics subsequently developed disease. The question arises as to how many cases of disease may actually have been prevented by the public health intervention of antibiotic prophylaxis. A statistical model is developed to answer this question by relating to the …
