Analytical Upstream Collocation Solution Of A Forced Steady-State Convection-Diffusion Equation, Stephen Brill Dec 2002

Analytical Upstream Collocation Solution Of A Forced Steady-State Convection-Diffusion Equation, Stephen Brill

Stephen H. Brill

We give herein formulas for the solution of the Hermite collocation discretization of a nonhomogeneous steady-state convection-diffusion equation in one spatial dimension and with constant coefficients, defined on a uniform mesh, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The accuracy of the method is enhanced by employing "upsteam weighting" of the convective term in an optimal way. We discuss also the issue of where to optimally sample the forcing function. Computational examples illustrate the efficacy of the optimal upstream weighting technique combined with optimal sampling of the forcing function.

Direct And Sensitive Measurement Of Two-Photon Absorption Cross Sections, Peifang Tian, D. Keusters, Warren Warren

Peifang Tian

Summary form only given. We present a direct method to detect weak two-photon absorption (TPA) signals. As a proof of principle, we have measured the TPA cross section δ for rhodamine 6G (R6G) in methanol and obtained a value which agrees with other results. The technique may be very useful in biomedical imaging.

Transparent Fault Tolerance For Web Services Based Architectures, Vijay Dialani, Simon Miles, Luc Moreau, David De Roure, Michael Luck Dec 2001

Transparent Fault Tolerance For Web Services Based Architectures, Vijay Dialani, Simon Miles, Luc Moreau, David De Roure, Michael Luck

Vijay Dialani

Service-based architectures enable the development of new classes of Grid and distributed applications. One of the main capabilities provided by such systems is the dynamic and flexible integration of services, according to which services are allowed to be a part of more than one distributed system and simultaneously serve different applications. This increased flexibility in system composition makes it difficult to address classical distributed system issues such as fault-tolerance. While it is relatively easy to make an individual service fault-tolerant, improving fault-tolerance of services collaborating in multiple application scenarios is a challenging task. In this paper, we look at the …

Deformation Associated With A Continental Normal Fault System, Western Grand Canyon, Arizona, Phillip Resor, David Pollard Dec 2001

Deformation Associated With A Continental Normal Fault System, Western Grand Canyon, Arizona, Phillip Resor, David Pollard

Phillip G Resor

In the western Grand Canyon, the Colorado River cuts through a series of moderate offset normal faults that mark the transition between the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range tectonic provinces. Both hanging wall and footwall rocks are exposed over > 1,000 m of vertical section, and contain relatively simple pre-existing structures. The area thus presents an opportunity to investigate processes of continental extension without cross-cutting fault patterns and large rotations typical of much of the Basin and Range. We have mapped 8 km of the Froggy Fault, including ~ 600 m of vertical section, and deformed strata of the …

Stable Refinable Generators Of Shift Invariant Spaces With Certain Regularities And Vanishing Moments, Tian-Xiao He Dec 2001

Stable Refinable Generators Of Shift Invariant Spaces With Certain Regularities And Vanishing Moments, Tian-Xiao He

Tian-Xiao He

In this paper, we discuss the stable refinable functions that generate shift in variant (SI) spaces and possess the largest possible regularities and required vanishing moments. The stability of the corresponding complementary spaces is also discussed.

Slip Inversion On Complex Fault Surfaces Using Angular Elastic Dislocations, Phillip Resor, L Maerten, F Maerten Dec 2001

Slip Inversion On Complex Fault Surfaces Using Angular Elastic Dislocations, Phillip Resor, L Maerten, F Maerten

Phillip G Resor

We present a new 3D slip-inversion method based on the analytical solution of an angular dislocation in a linear-elastic, homogeneous, isotropic, whole- or half-space. The approach uses a boundary element method (BEM) that employs planar triangular elements of constant displacement to model fault surfaces. Discretization of surfaces into triangular boundary elements allows the construction of complex 3D fault surfaces with irregular tipline and no overlaps or gaps. A damped least squares method is used to minimize the functional ¶llel.b-d∥2+ɛ^{2}∥ bigtriangledown .b∥ ^{2},where b represents the slip distribution on the faults, φ the influence coefficient matrix and d the observed deformation …

Estimation Of Error In Large Area Underwater Photomosaics Using Vehicle Navigation Data, C. Roman, H. Singh Oct 2001

Estimation Of Error In Large Area Underwater Photomosaics Using Vehicle Navigation Data, C. Roman, H. Singh

Christopher N. Roman

Creating geometrically accurate photomosaics of underwater sites using images collected from an AUV or ROV is a difficult task due to dimensional errors which grow as a function of 3D image distortion and the mosaicking process. Although photomosiacs are accurate locally their utility for accurately representing a large survey area is jeopardized by this error growth. Evaluating the error in a mosaic is the first step in creating globally accurate photomosaics of an unstructured environment with bounded error. Using vehicle navigation data and sensor offsets it is possible to estimate the error present in large area photomosaics independent of the …
