Understanding Alpha Decay, Br Holstein Dec 1995

Understanding Alpha Decay, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

The subject of alpha decay is an important part of a course in modern physics, as it provides a clear experimental manifestation of the phenomenon of barrier penetration. The traditional approach, based on Gamow's complex eigenvalue method, raises a number of questions which can be answered by employing the older but less well-known procedure of summing over scattering states. Additional insights are gained by examination of the alpha decay system via more contemporary path integral based techniques.

Achieving Balance In Software Engineering Curricula, Tim Comber, Bruce Lo, Richard Watson Dec 1995

Achieving Balance In Software Engineering Curricula, Tim Comber, Bruce Lo, Richard Watson

Tim Comber

Achieving balance is an issue that faces all curriculum designers. The complexity of the software process demands a pluralistic approach to systems development. This pluralism must also be reflected in the education and training of future software engineers. How can we integrate the diverse views into a unified curriculum framework? How can we cover all topics that are deemed essential for the discipline. We must balance specialised software engineering topics with fundamental topics in computer science and we must also balance the variety of software engineering topics amongst themselves within the relatively short three-year undergraduate curriculum. Very often, what is …

Fourier Series And Optical Transform Techniques In Contemporary Optics: An Introduction, Raymond Wilson, Sean Mccreary Apr 1995

Fourier Series And Optical Transform Techniques In Contemporary Optics: An Introduction, Raymond Wilson, Sean Mccreary

Raymond Wilson

An extensively illustrated introduction to Fourier transform methods containing 280+ figures which demonstrate in 3-space the numerous basic functions of optical diffraction and imaging. Covers the mathematical terminology for wave phenomena with emphasis on spatial frequency terms. The relationship between Fraunhofer diffraction by two-dimensional functions, the Fourier transform in 3-space and use of the convolution theorem are among the subjects discussed.

Aids Epidemiology: A Quantitative Approach, Ron Brookmeyer, Mitchell Gail Nov 1994

Aids Epidemiology: A Quantitative Approach, Ron Brookmeyer, Mitchell Gail

Ron Brookmeyer

This comprehensive work confronts the problems that are unique to AIDS research and unites them under a single conceptual framework. It focuses on methods for the design and analysis of epidemiologic studies, the natural history of AIDS and the transmission of HIV, methods for tracking and projecting the course of the epidemic, and statistical issues in therapeutic trials. The various methods of monitoring and forecasting this disease receive comprehensive treatment. These methods include back-calculation, which the authors developed; interpretation of survey data on HIV prevalence; mathematical models for HIV transmission; and approaches that combine different types of epidemiological data. Much …
