On The Interpretation Of Multi-Year Estimates Of The American Community Survey As Period Estimates, Chaitra Nagaraja, Tucker Mcelroy Dec 2014

On The Interpretation Of Multi-Year Estimates Of The American Community Survey As Period Estimates, Chaitra Nagaraja, Tucker Mcelroy

Chaitra H Nagaraja

The rolling sample methodology of the American Community Survey introduces temporal distortions, resulting in Multi-Year Estimates that measure aggregate activity over three or five years. This paper introduces a novel, nonparametric method for quantifying the impact of viewing multi-year estimates as functions of single-year estimates belonging to the same time span. The method is based on examining the changes to confidence interval coverage. As an application of primary interest, the interpretation of a multi-year estimate as the simple average of single-year estimates is a viewpoint that underpins the published estimates of sampling variability. Therefore it is vital to ascertain the …

Promoting Similarity Of Model Sparsity Structures In Integrative Analysis Of Cancer Genetic Data, Shuangge Ma Dec 2014

Promoting Similarity Of Model Sparsity Structures In Integrative Analysis Of Cancer Genetic Data, Shuangge Ma

Shuangge Ma

In profiling studies, the analysis of a single dataset often leads to unsatisfactory results because of the small sample size. Multi-dataset analysis utilizes information across multiple independent datasets and outperforms single-dataset analysis. Among the available multi-dataset analysis methods, integrative analysis methods aggregate and analyze raw data and outperform meta-analysis methods, which analyze multiple datasets separately and then pool summary statistics. In this study, we conduct integrative analysis and marker selection under the heterogeneity structure, which allows different datasets to have overlapping but not necessarily identical sets of markers. Under certain scenarios, it is reasonable to expect some similarity of identified …

Detrital Zircon Provenance Analysis Of The Great Valley Group, California: Evolution Of An Arc-Forearc System, Kathleen Surpless, Stephan Graham, Joseph Wooden, Michael Mcwilliams

Kathleen D. Surpless

The improved resolution of sediment provenance from detrital zircon analysis of Great Valley stratigraphy enables recognition of previously undocumented arc magmatism and the evolution of regional drainage systems within the Cretaceous arc-forearc system related to uplift, magmatism, and structure in the arc. Great Valley detrital zircon age data confirm previous studies that indicate that the locus of the sediment source in the southern Sierra Nevada arc migrated east with the active volcanic front and suggest rapid rates of uplift and unroofing of the southern arc. Sacramento Valley detrital zircon age data indicate a more complex history of drainage in the …

Textures and mineral assemblages of metamorphic rocks of the Tobacco Root Mountains are consistent with metamorphism of all rocks during the Big Sky orogeny (1.77 Ga) at relatively high pressure (P >1.0 GPa) followed by differential reequilibration on a clockwise P-T path at lower pressures (0.6–0.8 GPa). The highest pressures are documented by coarse-grained kyanite and orthopyroxene in aluminous orthoamphibolites, which require P ≥ 1.0 GPa. Other higher-pressure mineral assemblages of note include kyanite + orthoamphibole and kyanite + K-feldspar. Abundant textural evidence for partial melting in pelitic and basaltic rocks includes leucosomes, very large (several cm across) porphyroblasts of …

The Dape-Encoded N-Succinyl-L,L-Diaminopimelic Acid Desuccinylase From Haemophilus Influenzae Contains Two Active-Site Histidine Residues, Danuta M. Gillner, David L. Bienvenue, Boguslaw P. Nocek, Andzrej Joachimiak, Vincentos Zachary, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz

Richard C. Holz

The catalytic and structural properties of the H67A and H349A dapE-encoded N-succinyl-l,l-diaminopimelic acid desuccinylase (DapE) from Haemophilus influenzae were investigated. On the basis of sequence alignment with the carboxypeptidase from Pseudomonas sp. strain RS-16, both H67 and H349 were predicted to be Zn(II) ligands. The H67A DapE enzyme exhibited a decreased catalytic efficiency (180-fold) compared with wild-type (WT) DapE towards N-succinyldiaminopimelic acid. No catalytic activity was observed for H349A under the experimental conditions used. The electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electronic absorption data indicate that the Co(II) ion bound to H349A-DapE is analogous to that of WT DapE after the …

Cutoff: A Spatio-Temporal Imputation Method, Lingbing Feng, Gen Nowak, Terry O'Neill, Alan H. Welsh

Terry O'Neill

Missing values occur frequently in many different statistical applications and need to be dealt with carefully, especially when the data are collected spatio-temporally. We propose a method called CUTOFF imputation that utilizes the spatio-temporal nature of the data to accurately and efficiently impute missing values. The main feature of this method is that the estimate of a missing value is produced by incorporating similar observed temporal information from the value’s nearest spatial neighbors. Extensions to this method are also developed to expand the method’s ability to accommodate other data generating processes. We develop a cross-validation procedure that optimally chooses parameters …

The Role Of Transformative Learning In Environmental Education, Jospeh Chen, Akilah Martin Nov 2014

The Role Of Transformative Learning In Environmental Education, Jospeh Chen, Akilah Martin

Akilah Martin

Knowledge-based environmental education has been consistently found to be limited in its effectiveness due to its small and indirect role in promoting sustainable behavior, while focusing on the impact of social context has been found to be more conceptually relevant. Transformative learning theory is positioned to be foundational to environmental education based on its increasing focus on promoting social activism through personal transformations. We suggest four criteria in the development of an effective transformative environmental education methodology. Methodologies should (1) focus on change and not just knowledge attainment, (2) reveal behaviors in a real-world context, (3) highlight internal and external …

The Analysis Of Muonium Hyperfine Interaction Measurements Of Thermal Rate Constants For Addition Reactions, Ronald Duchovic, A Wagner, R Turner, D Garner, D Fleming Oct 2014

The Analysis Of Muonium Hyperfine Interaction Measurements Of Thermal Rate Constants For Addition Reactions, Ronald Duchovic, A Wagner, R Turner, D Garner, D Fleming

Ronald J. Duchovic

A new model is developed for the analysis of muon spin relaxation (mu-SR) measurements of muonium (Mu) reaction rates with other chemical species. The kinetics component of the model is specifically developed for addition reactions but can be extended to direct reactions. The polarization component of the model assumes that the adduct formed possesses a single, effective spin precession frequency. The complete model is solved to obtain an analytic expression for the mu-SR signal as a function of time. Both a time-ordered sequence method and a Boltzmann spin equation method give equivalent solutions. These solutions are analyzed under various kinetic …

The Fft Method For Determining Semiclassical Eigenvalues: Application To Asymmetric Top Rigid Rotors, Ronald Duchovic, G Schatz

Ronald J. Duchovic

A Fourier transform method for calculating action variables and semiclassical eigenvalues in molecules starting from Cartesian coordinates and momenta is developed and applied to the determination of rotational semiclassical eigenvalues for rigid asymmetric top molecules. The method involves calculating rotational actions by using Fourier representations of the symmetric top action‐angle variables to express the integrals. The question of what is the optimum quantization axis is considered, and it is found that the same primitive semiclassical eigenvalues are obtained independent of which principal axis is used for quantization provided that the replacement J → J+ 1/2 is made. The replacement J …
