Monosulfidic Black Ooze (MBO) describes an organic material, enriched with iron monosulfides, commonly found in Acid Sulfate Soil (ASS) landscapes. Dominating the surficial sediment layer, this highly mobile material is easily incorporated into the water column when disturbed, resulting in severe deoxygenation and acidification. MBO has recently been implicated in massive fish kills associated with flood events in north eastern NSW, Australia. The process of acidification and the formation of intermediate sulfur species have been examined in ASS; however, there is little information on the chemical behaviour of MBO originating from drainage channels in ASS landscapes. We construct analytically, a new family of null solutions to Maxwell’s equations in free space whose field lines encode all torus knots and links. The evolution of these null fields, analogous to a compressible flow along the Poynting vector that is shear free, preserves the topology of the knots and links. Our approach combines the construction of null fields with complex polynomials on S3. We examine and illustrate the geometry and evolution of the solutions, making manifest the structure of nested knotted tori filled by the field lines.

Extreme Quaternary climatic variation in Australia brought radical environmental changes to various parts of the continent. In this article, I discuss these changes in terms of mega-lake development in Central Australia, and in particular the southern Lake Eyre Basin (SLEB). The formation of these features, together with the fossil record of the region, throws light on the palaeoclimatic and palaeobiological relationships of megafauna and other animal groups, and the trophic development required to support them.
