The goal of this talk is to showcase some visualization projects that we developed for a 3-day Code in R summer program, designed to inspire the creative side of our STEM students by engaging them with computational projects that we developed with the purpose of mixing calculus level math and code to create complex geometric patterns. One of the goals of this program was to attract more minority and female students into applied math and computer science majors.

Land Cover Data for the Mississippi-Alabama Barrier Islands, 2010-2011
Land cover on the Mississippi-Alabama barrier islands was surveyed in 2010-2011 as part of continuing research on island geomorphic and vegetation dynamics following the 2005 impact of Hurricane Katrina. Results of the survey include sub-meter GPS location, a listing of dominant vegetation species and field photographs recorded at 375 sampling locations distributed among Cat, West Ship, East Ship, Horn, Sand, Petit Bois and West Dauphin Islands. Mercury contamination in the Great Lakes continues to have important public health and wildlife ecotoxicology impacts, and atmospheric deposition is a significant ongoing loading pathway. The objective of this study was to estimate the amount and source-attribution for atmospheric mercury deposition to each lake, information needed to prioritize amelioration efforts. A new global, Eulerian version of the HYSPLIT-Hg model was used to simulate the 2005 global atmospheric transport and deposition of mercury to the Great Lakes. In addition to the base case, 10 alternative model configurations were used to examine sensitivity to uncertainties in atmospheric mercury chemistry and surface exchange. …

In general, the availability of sediment for transport increases with the magnitude of bed shear stress, which varies over various temporal and spatial scales. However, in a muddy setting, consolidation or swelling of the bed also contributes to fluctuations in sediment mobility. One such environment is the York River estuary, a partiallymixed tidal tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, USA. The York River often has a Secondary Turbidity Maximum (STM) mid-estuary at the transition from a shallower, less stratified section upstream to a deeper, more stratified section downstream. The Estuarine Hypoxia component of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (US-IOOS) Coastal and Ocean Modeling Testbed (COMT) is evaluating existing hydrodynamic and water quality models used or likely to be used for operations and/or for regulation in the Chesapeake Bay and other, similar estuarine environments. The outcomes of this work are expected to help with the development of operational hypoxia forecast capabilities for the Bay. The guaipyridine alkaloids are a family of compounds that all share an unusual carbon structure, whose source plants have been used as a traditional medicine in Southeast Asia. Members of the guaipyridine family include cananodine and the rupestines. Cananodine has been isolated from the fruits of the Canaga odorata in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Cananodine has been used of decades as a traditional medicine for the treatment of malaria, infections and fever. Studies of cananodine’s biological activity have reveled activity against Hep G2 and Hep 2,2,15 human hepatocarcinoma cell lines, the most common types of liver cancer. Due to …

Lactones are cyclic esters of varying ring size that occur naturally in organic compounds. Organic structures such as these have various useful biological activities applicable to antibacterial drugs, potential anticancer drugs, and participants of metabolic processes. Gold catalysts Au(I) and Au(III) are shown in our experiments to be effective in inducing intramolecular lactonization of epoxide esters to form desired lactone products. In our experiments gold catalysts coordinated with epoxides to develop a positive charge on the carbon nearest to the carbonyl. The York River estuary is a partially mixed semi-diurnal tidal tributary of the Chesapeake Bay with salinities ranging from 0 to 26 psu and an ~0.8 m tidal range. Sediment within many estuaries, including the York River, Virginia, is dominated by mixtures of mud. Due to its cohesive nature, estimating sediment fluxes for mud is a complex problem that can be addressed using numerical models such as the Community Sediment Transport Modeling System (CSTMS), which incorporates suspended sediment transport, erosion, and deposition within the hydrodynamic Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). Cholesterol is carried and transported through bloodstream by lipoproteins. There are two types of lipoproteins: low density lipoprotein, or LDL, and high density lipoprotein, or HDL. LDL cholesterol is considered “bad” cholesterol because it can form plaque and hard deposit leading to arteries clog and make them less flexible. Heart attack or stroke will happen if the hard deposit blocks a narrowed artery. HDL cholesterol helps to remove LDL from the artery back to the liver.

Fault rock low-temperature thermochronometry can inform the timing, temperature, and significance of hydrothermal fluid circulation in fault systems. We demonstrate this with combined hematite (U-Th)/He (He) dating, and sandstone apatite fission-track (AFT) and apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He (He) thermochronometry from fault-related fissures on the Gower Peninsula, Wales. Hematite He dates from 141 ± 5.1 Ma to 120 ± 5.0 Ma overlap with a 131 ± 20 Ma sandstone infill AFT date. Individual zircon He dates are 402–260 Ma, reflecting source material erosion, and imply a maximum Late Permian infill depositional age. Burial history reconstruction reveals modern exposures were not buried …

A significant area of research within the Oil and Gas industry centers around the understanding of rock brittleness and fracture mechanics related to inducing and extending hydraulic fractures. This study defines rock brittleness as the fracture density, or the fracture surface area per unit volume (m-1), at a particular strain state. The mechanism of formation for surface bound radicals were studied using ab initio quantum methods. The shift in electron density from transition metal surfaces to surface bound radical groups was studied to learn the mechanism for the binding. Results indicate an oxidation-reduction based mechanism of formation.

The York River estuary is categorized as micro-tidal with a tidal range ~0.8 m; however, periodically produce enough shear stress to erode sediment from the bed and redistribute it along the estuary. However, the supply of mobile sediment differs over various temporal and spatial scales. The primary focus here is to examine the tidal variation in bed mobility by comparing variations in bed erodibility over the spring-neap cycle. The Chesapeake Bay and its associated tidal tributaries are among the many coastal systems where degraded water clarity is a major concern. Despite long-term decreases in sediment input, water clarity has continued to deteriorate, especially in the southern Bay. Here it is proposed that the disconnect between water clarity and sediment input is related to the dynamic nature of locally suspended estuarine particles, as well as the interaction between suspended organic particles and inorganic solids. Appropriate parameterization of time-dependent erodibility of muddy seabeds is a significant barrier to improved understanding and accurate modeling of sediment dynamics in estuaries and other coastal regions. In an effort to better understand controls on muddy seabed erodibility, bed erodibility and associated bed sediment properties have been measured by our group on cores collected on dozens of cruises over the last decade in the York Estuary. We have also inferred time-varying erodibility indirectly in the York Estuary over several years by vertically integrating observations of tidally-varying suspended sediment concentration. In an effort to better understand controls on muddy seabed erodibility, bed erodibility and associated bed sediment properties have been measured by our group on cores collected on dozens of cruises over the last decade in the York Estuary. We have also inferred time-varying erodibility indirectly in the York Estuary over several years by vertically integrating observations of tidally-varying suspended sediment concentration. The Smit-Caple DSAC Pauson-Khand cyclization of a series of N-protected allyl propargyl amines in the absence of oxygen gave rise to formation of the saturated azabicyclo[3.3.0]octanones in excellent yields. Standard cyclization in air gave mixtures of saturated and unsaturated ketones.

An intramolecular reductive Pauson-Khand reaction of the hexacarbonyldicobalt complex of N-(tert-butyloxycarbonyl)allylpropargylamine under dry-state adsorption conditions directly afforded the saturated N-BOC-3-azabicyclo[3.3.0]octan-7-one when the reaction was performed under an inert atmosphere. This bicyclic ketone was converted in several steps to the novel octahydro-1-azeto[2′,3′:3,4]cyclopenta[1,2-C]pyrrole ring system as confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis.
