Sources Of Gaseous Oxidized Mercury And Mercury Dry Deposition At Two Southeastern U.S. Sites, Peter S. Weiss-Penzias, Mae S. Gustin, Seth N. Lyman Sep 2011

Sources Of Gaseous Oxidized Mercury And Mercury Dry Deposition At Two Southeastern U.S. Sites, Peter S. Weiss-Penzias, Mae S. Gustin, Seth N. Lyman

USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications

Wet deposition measurements have shown that relative to other parts of the US, the southeastern region has the highest mercury (Hg) inputs. The source of this Hg has been investigated by multiple researchers and is suggested to be derived from local, regional and global sources. Here we focus on trying to understand potential sources of Hg to this area during periods dominated by dry gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM) deposition. Dry deposition of GOM to a surrogate surface was measured in conjunction with speciated atmospheric Hg, and ancillary parameters from September 2007 through September 2008 at two sites located within 25 …

Part I: Policy Dimensions Of Offshore Wind Energy Development, Erik Nordman Ph.D., Betty Gajewski, Paul Isely Ph.D., John Koches, Kurt Thompson, Jon Vandermolen, Yue Fan, Sara Damm, Aaron Ferguson, Ryan Gajewski, Claire Schoolmaster

Erik Edward Nordman

The deployment of thousands of wind energy facilities required to meet various renewable energy targets will bring changes to the nation’s landscapes, communities, and economies.

The intent of this integrated assessment project is to comprehensively analyze the benefits and challenges to wind energy development in one particular region of coastal West Michigan, including Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa and Allegan counties.

By combining science and public participation, our integrated assessment will empower citizens and local governments to make informed decisions about wind energy facilities in their communities. Our project will enhance local capacity to mitigate conflicts surrounding wind energy development, and will …

Examining Trends In Taste Preferences, Market Demand, And Annual Catch In An Indigenous Marine Turtle Fishery In Southwest Madagascar, Kristin Jones Apr 2011

Examining Trends In Taste Preferences, Market Demand, And Annual Catch In An Indigenous Marine Turtle Fishery In Southwest Madagascar, Kristin Jones

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The worldwide exploitation of marine turtles has been common throughout human history, turtle products including carapaces for decoration and use, skin for leather, and eggs and meat for consumption. The hunting of marine turtles has long established economic importance among Madagascar's coastal inhabitants and is an activity traditionally associated with integral cultural and spiritual values. Due to overexploitation and a combination of relatively newer threats such as pollution, habitat loss, and incidental fisheries take, however, all marine turtle species in the Indian Ocean are considered to be endangered or critically endangered. Although Madagascar's marine turtles have been legally protected from …

Confirmation Of 1rxs J165443.5–191620 As An Intermediate Polar And Its Orbital And Spin Periods, S. Scaringi, S. Connolly, J. Patterson, J. R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate the physical nature of the X-ray emitting source 1RXS J165443.5−191620 through optical photometry and time-resolved spectroscopy. Optical photometry is obtained from a variety of telescopes all over the world spanning ≈27 days. Additionally, time-resolved spectroscopy is obtained from the MDM observatory.

An Investigation Of Thermal Shock In Porous Clay Ceramics, Nima Rahbar, F. Nyongesa, S. Obwoya, J. Zimba, B. Aduda, W. Soboyejo Mar 2011

An Investigation Of Thermal Shock In Porous Clay Ceramics, Nima Rahbar, F. Nyongesa, S. Obwoya, J. Zimba, B. Aduda, W. Soboyejo

Nima Rahbar

The thermal shock resistance of porous ceramic materials is often characterized by the Hasselman parameters. However, in other scenarios, the room-temperature residual strengths after thermal shock are also used to quantify the damage due to thermal shock. This paper attempts to link the measured residual strengths to the dominant crack features that are introduced due to thermal shock in porous clay ceramics produced by the sintering of clay powders with well-controlled size ranges. Residual strength estimates from bend tests are compared with fracture mechanics predictions. The implications of the residual strength results are then discussed for the characterization of damage …

I was a Senior-Grad student in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison on 19 December 1969. After purchasing a camera to photograph motorcycle trips, I returned to the 13th floor of the Meteorology and Space Science building in time to attend the annual slide show presented by Professor Heinz H. Lettau. Slides were collected from department members to augment his own and Dr. Lettau organized and presented the set. It was a feast of previously unnoticed phenomena that enriched my life. This presentation of photos and composites celebrates a rich contribution of a Doktor Vater …
